Regarding model vs strangers... The session with Anabelle was great. However, strangers may fit better environmental portraits. So, both alternatives have a place. The thing with the Annabelle photographs was the overall quality (film/developer choice, etc.).
@larsgibbon33272 жыл бұрын
Strangers. For me they add another level of interest that a model cannot provide. With each stranger, there is a story behind the image, who is the person, why are they there, etc. Although we do not get to know them, it still adds something.

Thanks, I agree. To longer I've been doing photography for the more I've become more inserted in taking portraits of 'real' people. Not that models aren't real people but people who aren't used to posing for a camera.

Strangers. But I definitely have the same thoughts when it comes to 35mm, film and large format. If I’m wanting something quick and small, I’m just going to go digital and forego all the costs, time, etc that comes with film, specifically 35mm. Enjoyed this talk though and the 4x5 wedding shots were great. Had the same idea about a project at weddings and I was going to call it “An American Wedding.” Maybe we can do both and compare USA against UK weddings 💒
@Tom-Humble2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bryan. Would love to see that from you too! Be interesting to compare. Were you focusing more on the couples or the guests? Or just a mix of everything?

Models Tom!

Good to see another video Tom. In regards to the models or strangers question, I’d recommend strangers. I’ve been shooting 4x5 portraits of strangers over the past couple of months and have absolutely enjoyed it. On more than one occasion, a 5 minute photo has turned into an hour long conversation with someone I would never have otherwise met. That being said, our 107 day lockdown ended this week and I’m looking forward to shooting portraits of friends, family and models that have been off limits for a few months.
@Tom-Humble2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Matt, I’ve been following along with your recent stranger portraits on insta and I enjoy seeing them! When I was shooting for the southend project I had many similar experiences where a 5 min meeting turned into an hour long conversation. It’s why I think my film photography is going more towards long term project work where I get the chance to tell others stories. I find it much more interesting and rewarding.

Nice images… I’ve been there… but I changed my mind again on 35mm. Print size I think has a great influence of how much you like it as well as how you shoot. There are many classic photos shot on 35mm so size is a Personal choice. But I’ve started it again with an old p&s. I sold all my MF and LF gear. I don’t shoot b&w , colour is stupid money now. I have a ar73 now which I use voitlander lenses on and the results are crazy good. I hardly use it but that’s down to time not the camera. I’m in a long project on Southend myself but not shot anything now since last year.

Have you considered a Mamiya 6 / Mamiya 7 or a Fuji GW690?
@Tom-Humble2 жыл бұрын
I’ve used the Mamiya 7 quite a few times and love the portability of it but personally find the lenses a bit too sharp for my taste. The scans look almost digital to my eye. I almost bought the Fuji GW690 before getting my RB67 but I settled for that. I may invest in one some day though as I love the 6x9 look.
