I am trying to work up a load and patch combination for my CVA Hawkin .50 caliber muzzleloader. I'm not having much success with it.

Here's something I've learned over the years. When swabbing the barrel with a brush, hold the muzzle towards the ground, that way the fauling can fall out instead of being packed in the nipple hole.

You should check your shot patches. They should be about 20 to30 feet from the muzzle. I think your patches are too thin. You should have to put some pressure with a ball starter to get the ball just below the muzzle before you cut it off. Your shot patches not have any burned threw holes. If so, you need to increase the thickness of the patch to make a tighter seal. You can also put an over powder patch before you load the patched ball. This will stop the patch on the ball from burning threw. Sixty grains should be good, but you might have to go up some. The main thing is to get a tight fitting ball with no burning. Just a few suggestions . I have been shooting black powder guns sense 1965 and love it. You need to make sure your bore is smooth. A rough bore will cut your patch. Use no.4 grit steel wool if you have to soaked in oil. Good luck, Ron from vermont

Up your patch thickness or ball size and get that ball tight. Then start working with the powder too fine tune your group.once you get her grouping tight adjust the site too your liking! Love your videos! This is your neighbor Bear Claw from Kilmichael Mississippi ! I shoot a 54 cal flintlock! Downed a bunch of them with it!

Sometimes round balls shoot better with a tighter fitting patch. At least that is what I have found to be true. Good video
@brianprewitt332110 ай бұрын
Also, not scolding but when pushing the ball down make 1 swift push until ball seats on powder, no tamping at the end. That tamping can deform a pure lead ball. Consistent loading procedures and seating pressure are extremely important to accuracy with these things.

I started running felt overpower wads and a 20 thousands patch and it really tighted up the groups. In my rifle a fouled bore has a different zero usually alittle higher

Hey Justin! As much as I enjoy watching your other videos... I REALLY ENJOY watching you break out the Ol' Smoke Poles! It is challenging to say the least; but when everything comes together and aligns... it is just so, So, SO satisfying! "Bout like everything else in Life... the more you practice a task; the easier it becomes, the better you get at it & the more accuracy you achieve, as the movements & habits become "Hard Wired" into the brain. As for blowing down the barrel... it may be against the rules at a NMLRA sanctioned event or range... but YOU are NOT ON a NMLRA range... so the point is moot... at best! The Capper that Uncle Sasquatch sent will speed up the loading process considerably on your caplock. +Consistency is the Hobgoblin of small minds.", but in Shooting it is critical! There are a lot of variables to consider to get the most reliable accuracy with each shot. Powder grain grade fineness (1F, 2F, or 3F), amount of the powder load, patch thickness, patch lube, bullet type, bullet size, how compacted the load is at the breech prior to pulling the trigger, weather conditions, powder residue between shots, familiarity with the firearm, and as Dad always said, "The Loose Screw behind the butt plate!". Ha! ha! ha! ha! ha! Do not be discouraged... but continue to experiment. Eventually, through the process of trial & error... you WILL fine the "Sweet Spot" that the rifle likes. Keep at it... and you'll get there!

I'm trying to get my .54 Tryon dialed in to compete with next spring. I'm trying different patch thicknesses, different roundballs sizes and different lubes. Some combinations look like your shooting today. Some are a bit better. I get frustrated lol. Try patch,ball size and powder load as well as different lubes and eventually it will come together! 😁
@larryhenze81210 ай бұрын
Also, check the twist rate of the rifle. I would imagine it's 1:48 , but if it was 1:24 or something,it will never shoot roundball and if it's 1:66 it won't shoot conical like in your other pocket. 1:48 generally will shoot either fairly well
@brianprewitt332110 ай бұрын
Get ahold of that forearm as well. Lock time is slow on a muzzleloader. Could be a lot of wiggle between the time that trigger breaks and when the ball exits the barrel. They would blow down the barrel if they've ever dumped a powder charge in on a hot ember.
@user-rg7cu5lj1x10 ай бұрын
Check your sights. Make sure the windage hasn’t moved. I had one like that that I had to end up supergluing the sights.
@tommylitchfield345010 ай бұрын
Another thing to check is if your sights are loose in their dovetails and moving from shot to shot. A few thousandths wiggling around means inches out the barrel. Edit. I just looked at my CVA HAwkin that has what looks like the same sights as yours, but it has brass hardware and a capbox, and I see something that you might want to check on the sights. The back sight on mine is adjustable for windage by loosening a screw on one side and tightening the screw on the other side. Since your rifle is spreadin them more or less side to side and not that much up and down, maybe your adjustment screws are loose, if yours works like mine. I would check them both with a screwdriver. And if you have to adjust a back sight, move the sight which way you want the impact to change. Chase a miss with a front sight, like a bow or AR elevation and correct a miss with a back sight. You probably already know that, but it might help somebody. The more I type, the more I wonder if that sight blade in the back's set screws are not snug. Somebody might have just turned one screw to move the sight over and didn't tighten the other one up on the other side. Your sight might be different, but mine don't just move right and left with a simple screw turn. You want to move it to the right, you have to loosen the right screw and tighten the left screw. Hopefully, yours works the same way and it's just some loose adjuster screws
@tommylitchfield345010 ай бұрын
Since your rifle is called the Hunter Model, it may have the fast twist rate rifling to stabilize bullets. The "bullet shooters" have a faster twist rate by a good margin over barrels rifled for round balls. A round ball .50 might have one turn in 6 feet of barrel, where a bullet rate of twist barrel might make one turn in 4 feet. If your patched ball ain't real tight, it can "strip out" of the riflings because it is getting spun too fast, so it ends up not spinning fast enough to stabilize it. The ball just "blows through" the rifling, so to speak.Try a bullet and see what you can see, and if it shoots the bullet straight, then it's probably a 1 in 48 or so twist. If it does, a thicker patch might let you still use round balls.
@larryalexander483310 ай бұрын
Yes sir maybe the case
@UncleSasquatchOutdoors10 ай бұрын
I would do what Tommy suggested...check that rear sight to make sure it's not loose. I think your patches may not me thick enough. There's loading easy and loading too easy. I'm gonna research that Hunter model and find out what the twist rate is.

Hey Justin, I would get rid of that pillow man. Get something a little more sturdy like a folded up wool blanket. Also, I’d check your set trigger. It might need to be adjusted to be a little lighter. I hope you get it figured out. That’s a great gun!
@larryreese614610 ай бұрын
Justin, I don't think the problem is patching, loads, lube, or whatever. The problem is the gun. My old Cva wouldn't hit the broad side of a barn until I tried a plastic patch. Then it drove tacks. Production guns have a rough barrel, burs etc. I'd look up some videos by the duelist on utube. He's got a video on smoothing a barrel and also on crowning one. You work that barrel over I bet it'll shoot better and clean better. Also, if the gun will handle sabots I'd hunt with them. Nothing wrong with a 50 cal round ball but a conical has more wallop. Round ball bleeds to the inside of the animal, not as much blood trail but a 50 cal sabot with an 80 or hundred grain load will put an animal down like it's hit with a freight train and I don't care how much powder I waste. Get it shooting that looks a handy little rifle. Have fun with it.

Use a bore scope,check the rifling...check the balls for roundness,and dont carry em loose in pockets ...and spend 5 bucks on lubed patches cut patch 1 over the powder to bore diameter...the ball patch should b just over bore diameter ,be certain ball is tight against powder and the 2 patch system gives u a much better flight of roundballs. If the rifling is messed up u dont have to junk it,send it to a gunsmith and have them re bore it in .54 cal.

In this video watching the muzzle bounce under recoil, off the pillow, you can guess where the rounds are hitting! Personally I have had problems like this before so I like to hold the rifle properly while using a rest rather than just letting the forend sit on its own 👍

I had a friend give me a 54 caliber cva hawken rifle. It is well worn and well used but it has become a favorite gun to hunt with. Take a close look at the barrel crown it might be damaged, that will make it not group. Recrowning might help.

Just a suggestion, use the thinner material. I really don't think blue jean is a good material. I've read that a mountain mans favorite was silk but that was hard for them to get their hands on. It shot better and gave a little more distance. I use store bought patches and conical ammo. Mine is good for about 80 to 100. I use a 100 grains.
@brianprewitt332110 ай бұрын
Try patch thickness of .015-.018. I prefer pillow ticking. Also I bet you will find best accuracy in the 80-90 grain range.

Justin i believe i would try shooting some of the maxi bullet or Thompson center bullet style instead of a round ball in that gun .S ee if it tightenes up them groups . The rifleing maybe wrong twist rate ?? What caliber is it 45 or50 ? I have a mold and friend has another style. Try those without a patch around 75 gr. If that works i can get you some bullets made up. My Thompson shoots them dead on .

It might have been tried somewhere , but , I haven't heard of it yet. A fire steel will last foe thousands of strikes ( when used as intended , I don't see why it wouldn't work for this ) . Look how much a bic lighter sparks ( looks like plenty of sparks to set off a charge to Me .. & thats a fraction of the size of a big fire steel ) just saying

Justin I'm not expert for sure but I've had the same problem with a rile of mine try the bullets you had in your pocket the bullets put mine right in the bullseye it has to do with the twist in the barrel they made the twist for both in some of those rifles and they don't do well with round balls
@randybacorn690010 ай бұрын
I agree that the twist is too fast for round balls. Maxi balls or a heavier bullet would shoot better.

I've got a question for You . If You took a fire steel ( a square one if You could find one ) and cut it down to the size of a piece of flint , then , shape it like a flint & put it in the hammer... would it work like a flint ? If it works out I bet it would last a lot longer & have a hoter spark than a flint .
