Take a couple of inches of the largest bronze wound guitar string and glue it into a bit of deer antler to make you a vent pick . Run it around in the touch-hole after you shoot. That bronze wound guitar string is softer than steel so it won't enlarge your touch-hole and the ribbed surface will do a good job of rasping away the fouling so your spark can get where it needs to go. Thanks for the video.

Hey Justin! Using the vent pick every time will help the Ol' Smoke Pole to send the lead down range. After filling the pan, try tilting the rifle to the right and give a tap or two with the heel of your hand. When the sparks ignite the pan powder, the resulting flame will go through the touch hole and get to the main charge. Try it and see if it helps!

With small bores I keep a patch on my cleaning jag all the time. It helps to keep the bore consistant. And of course Swiss burns cleaner and the smaller the charge the less fouling you have to deal with.

In the old days they used linen tow on a worm to scrub barrels. It was pieces of linen too short to weave into thread so they used wads of it to scrub pots and things. It was rough and tough. Todays Cotton doesnt have the scrubbing power that tow had. Make a cleaning patch out of green scrubbing pad and use a shotgun patch loop to scrub the fouling out of your bores. Follow with cotten patches and soapy water as usual and a good grade of oil. I like air tool oil. Leaving a little fouling in the grooves is the main reason for rust in bores. Thanks for the videos John Davis Jax Fl

@Larry Alexander any good patch lube would do the same. I used to use Hoppes #9 Plus BP lube/solvent at the range and routinely shot 15 to 50 round balls per session with the last load just as easy as the first. And it was pertroleum based. No "tar" ever. What makes a muzzle loader bore break in is shooting it--not some magic lube which is completely cleaned out after a normal cleaning.

I know I'm late to the comments, I only just found your channel. Love what your doing. When you are shooting your black powder guns, after you take a shot reload your firearm as you do then take a snug fitting cleaning patch put it in your mouth get it good and slobbery and swab the barrel out above the ball between shots. Only takes 5 seconds to do if you put the patch in your mouth before you start loading. Accuracy usually improves and cleaning time is usually reduced. Keep it up, hope I helped some. Good bless

Those first 3 shots weren't bad Justin. I have yet to start on my flinter. I've put together 2 or 3 caplocks and had 50 caliber green mountain barrel and an LR flint lock waiting but I just happened to notice an old 45 Belgian made barrel on Ebay, breeched, with a drum, barrel tennons attached. I had a Dixie percussion lock so this next one is another cap lock. Remembering the quality of the old Browning shotguns, pistols, and rifles that were Belgian made I'm a sucker for anything older that has made in Belgium stamped on the side of it. But I do intend to have myself a good flinter one of these days. Told you that spring steel would make you the best knife you ever had.

@@SpiritoftheOutdoors we called them a go devil. Got one of them in my yard with flowers around it. That Bowie I made from the wagon seat spring is a good one but not practical for use. It's wider towards the front than the back with the blade weight forward. The 4 inches at the top tip sharpened for hooking and the blade stays razor sharp. It's about 12 inches. It's impractical but I wouldn't won't to meet somebody in a dark alley with that in his hands. Suppose I could use it to stick hogs.

@@SpiritoftheOutdoors that last one you made just about the right size. Personally, I can get by with about a 4 and a half to five in blade about 3 sixteenths thick and about 3 quarter inch wide, straight blade. It's big enough to skin, short enough to gut without sticking a paunch, and small enough for skinning small game, gutting a fish, whatever. Wish I could show you the sheath set-up. It's sort of Indian style, can be carried several ways and has a kind of leather snap inside the sheath that the gaurd pops over. Won't come out unless you use your thumb to push forward on the sheath while you pull the knife with your other fingers. Works slick and the way its fitted you don't even know you're carrying a knife. I've used the knife and sheath for over 25 years. They're pretty beat up and show a lot of use. Knife is O 1 carbon steel I tempered with a torch and ground out and polished bright. Not bright anymore, got a little rust, age and wear on it. It's been everywhere, even down in your neck of the woods, and done everything from processing hogs and deer to gutting fish and wild turkey.

Killed my first muzzle loading deer with it.. I always intended to work that bore over with some fine sandpaper and check the thicknesses of the patches closer to the rifling but I traded it off before I got around to it. Good morning. I might also add to never over prime your pan. About half pan is perfect. Any more and the components of the powder will stop up the touch hole. I also like to shake the powder AWAY from the touch hole. I make my own powder and somtime it's a little dirtier than others, thus fowling can be a problem. *flash in the pan, with no bang ?* You might be putting the powder up against the flash hole, or covering flash hole. Intentionally or not, heaping the powder over the top of the flash hole can cause a flash in the pan....with no bang.... or a hang fire {delayed firing}. You actually want the powder to NOT cover the flash hole. A heap of powder covering that hole might keep the flash out of the hole. AHA ? One grain per caliber is usually a decent load... for accuracy. And such loads are usually enough to take game. The MODERATE one grain per caliber loads of fffg Germán or Swiss or Home made Willow or Grape vine powders usually shoot cleaner than Goex. 36 caliber, 36 grains. Olive oil on the patches works really well. HOT water poured through and plenty of it is a really good way to do a quick cleaning. Boiling water will convert the brown on your barrel to bluing... or blacking. So, if you want your barrel brown...avoid boiling water... IF you want your barrel black...boil or steam it in NON chlorinated water. Then gently buff with cotton flannel, canvas, or burlap as it dries off.*
