What a great find! Your 39A looks pristine and shoots like a champ. I have the forerunner to the 39A. It is the Marlin 1897 Takedown. It was manufactured in 1902 at New Haven. The 1897 is in very nice condition and shoots fantastic. I feel very fortunate to own the 1897 as a reminder of what this country is capable of producing. Thank you for your segment on the Marlin 39A.

I have a Marlin 39A bought it in the late 80's. I recall I soaked it with Hoppes and I got the wood wet, then like a fool not knowing better I ruined the wood. I put a new stock on it and I still own it today. Damn fine little rifle.

HoooKay....Where to start ! First- Cumberland Outdoorsman - I've 'liked, subscribed, and rung that damn bell ! ' I inherited my Fathers custom 39A about 3 years ago. I used to shoot it in the '70's, but Dad wouldn't let it go till he passed. It's now my pride and joy. Cumberland Outdoorsman - Prolly the best set up for a gun video I've ever seen on KZbin. 30 minutes out of my life that I'm going to cash in again, and re-watch ! Brilliant Sir ! Introduction, here's the gun.....several pictures ....segue to shooting the thing, with a variety of ammunition. Target video, explanations, etc. Segue again to how to break down and clean. Emphasis on a few critical things I never realized. MicroGrooving didn't come into being until 1953, ( I believe my rifle is also a 1950 model) how to clean, where NOT to oil.... Finally, a followup with high resolution GUN PORN pictures showing the rifle. Video ends with some safety tips.... ShitSnacks Brother ! You did this RIGHT ! You really did. I learned more in 30 minutes from your video than I had with book research since I got my Rifle a few years back. Thank You for this. Thank you Sir. My Father opted for the fine grained Black Walnut from the factory, as well as the 18 karat gold squirrel and rabbit, along with the factory engraving on the top barrel, both sides of the receiver, and the lever handle. Dad left the metal, but took the wood to Asia when we lived there in the 1970's. There, in Taichung Taiwan, he commissioned some wood carvers to do up some squirrels and rabbits on the broadside of the shoulder stock. Brilliant work. Rabbits are spot on, but the Squirrel on the opposite side is a bit....'suspect' as they don't have squirrels in Taiwan ! Looks more like a rat with a bushy tail. All the same, your video made me happy like you can't imagine! Great Job Sir ! I can't wait to check out everything else! IMAF, Santa Cruz Ca.

Good choice on the 39A. The Winchester 9422 comes in 2nd place after Marlin. For some reasons, I will never compare the Henry rifles. For old-school workmanship, aesthetic & function - Old Marlins rifles always come in 1st to me. Something magical about them ;))

Most of my childhood I lusted after a Marlin 39A & a S&W model 17(K22)m I now have seral of both. I've taken much game with both. I've been into Marlin 39As for decades(1960s). One of my favorite 22s for sure. Onw both the long one and the Mountie. A lot of older guys when I was young*Streator Illinois area) used the .22 shorts for squirrels so they wouldn't scare the other one in a tree when there were two in one tree. Most used head shots of course. Now I'm 74 and don't horn much. No knock but, your gun appears to have been refinished at some point in it's life, to me anyway?

I had a Marlin Golden 39A that I bought in 1960 when I was 10 years old. I believe that I paid $60 of my hard-earned money for it and was the first gun that I ever owned. I got a Weaver B-4 4-power scope to put on the tip-off mount which came with the rifle. All that I ever shot out of it was Remington Golden Bullet LRs. It was a real shooter. In High School I was a member of the Rifle Club and used to take my cased rifle to school and store it in the locked chemical closet of the Chemistry Teacher who was the faculty supervisor the club. After school we would go to the Naval Armory and shoot at their indoor range. Those Remington LRs would really make some noise compared to the .22 short target rounds that the others were shooting. I sold that rifle while I was in college to pay the rent or something. My wonderful wife bought me a Golden 39AS in 1990 after listening to me whine about not having that rifle any more. It has the rebounding hammer and the cross-bolt safety. I do not think that it shoots as well as my old rifle. At least her brother could always out-shoot me with their dad's Browning .22 auto. I did discover that it would shoot CCI Std. Velocity Target ammo pretty respectably. It still makes the same sound when working the lever, wears a Nikon Pro Staff 4x scope and has dispatched many a squirrel over the years.
@nhwnhw02 Жыл бұрын
First rifle I ever bought was a new Golden 39A in 1973. Has always been a very accurate rifle. Only a few years ago, did I finally put on a good scope. A nice Leupold 2x7 rimfire scope. It loves Federal High Velocity Match ammunition. The ability to cycle the action without changing my grip always made the 39A a special rifle. Also, holding 20 rounds isn't insignificant.

Good video on a wonderful gun. And yes, I know exactly what you're talking about. You covered the finer points of the gun well, including the takedown and reassembly, ejector retaining screw, the classic Marlin bullseye, etc. If it helps anyone, last I saw replacement bullseyes are available from Midway USA or Brownells, as well as on ebay. You do have to cut them to length and shape them, though. I simply use different grades of emery boards (for fingernails) to shape them with. The process is really simple, but there are youtube videos out there to help if one needs it. I've had to replace thee of them. The one in my 39A fell out and was lost, and two other 70s era rifles I bought were missing them. The good part there was that gave me some negotiating power to bring the price down. 😁 That's the nicest stock coloring and finish I've ever seen on a Marlin from that era. Nice pickup. 👍

I have my Father's. A 1960. He fitted it with a Lyman receiver sight and a Merit adjustable peep. The first things us boys did was lose the front sight hood. Then we dropped it and bent the visible brass bead on the front sight down, but that didn't really damage the profile. One time I broke the back peep sight off, but found it. Dad seemed to forgive me but I just gotta think how that much have hurt him. I you are an old guy but want to stay "period" and still be able to use this rifle to it's potential search up "Grubee." He imports pretty nice 3/4" scopes that works really well. A 1" scope on top of a 39A is just...a bit out of place.

Thanks for another interesting and informative video in my favorite of your series! As a ‘49 model myself, I can appreciate the quality of this era’s production. I had always wanted a 39, inspired by the ads in Boys Life. A few years ago I managed to stumble onto a ‘64 vintage Mountie in a good 95%. This is about my favorite configuration. This lass took an immediate shine to me and simply refused to allow me to leave the LGS until I had signed papers committing us to a formal (long term!) relationship! No regrets. As a compromise to fitting that unwanted scope, you might consider attempting to locate a period aperture sight. My favorites are the (steel) Lyman quarter minute, quick release, units. Excellent repeatable accuracy and improved sight picture. Just remove the disk for a great ‘ghost ring’ option. I believe 1” QD sling swivels would be a valuable addition - but I’m unwilling to alter an original rifle to achieve it. Other unmentioned models to consider: Browning (beautiful and smooth); Ithaca 72 (Henry, before Henry). The Mossberg Palomino was also a sleek possibility; its fit and finish seems to have improved over the last sixty years in comparison to modern production… I really liked the Brownings, but the Marlins are my favorites. Thanks again for another winner!

I, also a native Tennessean now living in Texas, wouldn't hunt the squirrels when the season first opened for the same reasons that you stated. As well, a lot of the old timers would say that you shouldn't hunt the rabbits and squirrels (rodents) until after the first frost in order to get rid of the "warbles" (I assume that this included actual warbles plus any other ectoparasites). We would usually hunt squirrels in between deer seasons (archery, muzzleloader, gun, etc.) or when we had tagged out. Squirrel dogs will scent better when there are colder temperatures and a little moisture in the air, as well.

I”be been watching out for this video. Great looking gun, beautiful finish for a 72 year old gun. Did you refinish the stock? My 1946 model has a pantina finish on the barrel, but no rust. I checked mine for the JM stamp on the barrel. It’s faint, but it”s there. Mine is drilled and tapped from the factory for a Weaver side mount N3 or N2 scope. I have a N3 mount and a period correct 3/4 inch scope. The scope is less than desirable, so unless I can find a side mount for a 1 inch tube, I will probably just leave it with open sights. You sure did do some accurate shooting with those open sights, even with the Shorts. Great job, my friend.

I have a 1948 Marlin 39a that I inherited from my grandfather recently along with his Winchester model 67 bolt action rifles and a 1930’s Iver Johnson 16ga break barrel. He was an expert rifleman in the marine corps during the Korean War, and they were all his guns from back when he was a marksman trainer. They’re all in impressive shape and only needed a bit of coming from sitting in his closet for over 50 years. I’m thinking about selling my Marlin 39a but I can’t figure out if it’s a Mountie, a standard takedown,or what series it is. It has the scope plate mounted and wasn’t an after market addition, but according to Wikipedia those weren’t first introduced until 1954. Mine has an “E” serial number so that traces it to the 1948 manufacturing run, but that’s pretty much all I can find out. Out of curiosity, if you don’t mind my asking, how much did you pay for yours? I’m trying to figure out what to price mine at, but they’re all over the place online. Mine’s in the best, well maintained, and cosmetic condition that I’ve seen for sale. It’s an amazing gun though. Crazy accurate and still functions flawlessly. I live in north Louisiana if you’re interested in adding another to your collection lol

Several years ago I had a 1963 version of this rifle. My then wife loved it so it became hers and she had a Gunsmith install a Leupold 2x7 scope on it for her. He sighted it in for 75 yards dead on. So when we got it back we took it to the local range. We put up several targets and she shot from a good solid bench rest. The targets we used were the type not suited for sighting in. The Center 10 ring was one inch which would make a fair target size. When she shot she shot 10 rounds and all ten were within the 1 inch circle. When we walked to the target 7 of the 10 were within the same hole. And the remainder were all within less than 1/4'' away. We had a DNR Officer at the range that day an he wittnessed this event. The Officer was T.R. Cummings WVDNR . He was amazed and said she could become a master arksman really easy. So will a Marlin 39A shoot certainly and very good too. simply design and near perfection.

I am the rare one that doesn't care for my 39. The action is stiffer than any Henry I've shot. Sure, I understand the build / quality difference, but it's still not as smooth. I won't trade it off because once gone, it's gone for good and I'd regret it. That said, when I pass it to someone in the family, I'll be fine with it.

Good video. Wish more young folks were interested in shooting. This vid is a good start. Did a video about my Marlin I got back after 60 years. It's at Microhomesteaders. Have a good one. And Merry Christmas
