The improvised loading stand was simple genius, I want one of these but I want the bullet mold to go with it, is .31 hard to come by? also did you use a number 11 cap? What would you say the mid range price point on a blued one should be? 15 grains of real 3f but would any substitute black work? Hard to get powder in my neck of the woods without buying enough to defend the Alamo and paying hefty hazmat fees.
@blackpowdershooter446 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I got the idea for loading like that from someone on the gun forums. He put out what he was getting for velocity and I had to try it. A .31 bullet mold is easy to come by, mines a Lee .319 double cavity mold, but some people just use buckshot. I was using #10 caps with pyrodex, I can't find real black in my area either. I would say a good price for a blued model would be no more than $275 new. Thanks for watching!

Of the 3 balls,- round (48g), light elongated (53g) and the heavy elongated (78g), the light elongated performs the best. At 25y it went through 2 pine boards, bouncing hard of the third. The heavy elongated carries well past 40 yards. Hits hard with mass effect. No real penetration though. I made a really handy and well fitting shoulder holster arrangement for it. Really works well.
@blackpowdershooter446 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I would think the light bullet probably did well because it was going at a higher velocity.

I like my .31s I have a 48 and 49 Colt pocket 4''. I fire cast balls from the Colt molds,- round, light elongated and a heavy elongated. I recently experienced that if the powder wasn t compressed considerably, the power was w a y yyyy less. A curious thing, I also have Colts Police model and Pocket Navy. The Navys lever won t ram as far as the Police lever. The Police was outperforming the Navy. I was confused. Then I noticed what was happening. I also discovered a 1980s article from a gun magazine where the 2 were tested. The tester also pointed this out. So, the next time I go out, I ll put a heavier charge and ram the balls to the same depth ,. Stuff like this.

Does the pietta pocket remington have a weak hammer spring? It seems like the hammer barely has enough authority to set off a percussion cap. The colt pockets do occasionally have this issue but definitely way less than the remington. I am weighing my options because i want to buy a pocket percussion revolver but am on the fence of buying either a remington or colt. Some advice would help thanks.
@blackpowdershooter442 жыл бұрын
I replaced the nipples on this Remington with Treso nipples, and the misfires occur much less frequently; I don't think they were due to a weak hammer spring. The Colt pockets really suck caps, but again if you replace the nipples it shouldn't be too much of an issue. The Colt can hold a bit more powder than the Remington, on the flipside the Remington is smaller overall than the Colt. Both accurate but shoot high. Hope this helps

Curious how folks label these .31s as nothing to take serious. Comparring the performance to , , nothing but a weak novelty. I have discovered this to be , , not the case!!! I just returned from a shoot. Colt Signature 4'' 1849 with a 57g light elongated with 16g, a 78g heavy elongated with 11g. firing at 25, 35 and 50 yds. Aim point 10'' low at 25, 15 at 35 and 30 at 50yds. Both balls went c o m p l e t e l y through a fir 2'' board, hitting hard into the dirt behind. Average group 8 inches. Btw, I also fired two round balls at 50yds. With 16g. They didn t go through the board. The elongateds with their flat bases and pointed nose perform signifigantly better. It is very clear that a g r e a t performance difference occurs depending upon the amount of powder compression. Best is when the compression stops b e f o r e the rammer reaches its stop, and the tip of the ball is just below (almost flush) with the chamber enterance.

I tested the Pocket Navy in the same manner. Light, medium and heavy elongated balls charged and seated properly. I was amazed as to how powerful it was!!! These thing perform very much better with the right size elongated balls. You responded to one of my posts about velocity , . As it is, even though the elongated is heavier and travelling slower due to this, as well as a lesser charge, in certain situations, the mass makes up for the lesser charge/velocity.
@geffreybolster37804 жыл бұрын
The elongateds fired from the .31 at 50yd went through a fir 2 x 4 where the round balls didn t. The heavier mass makes a h u g e difference after a distance of travel. Not that this pistol is made for 50+yd shots. I studied this stuff a lot, both historical accounts as well as my own experience.
