I’m wondering how you might feel about trying something like FujiXWeekly on the GFX100S, where you set up a few looks in-camera that are attempts at film simulations bound to the JPEG, but obviously leaving the RAF file alone. It seems counterintuitive for what is a 100 megapixel camera aimed at pros, but it works for me because I like the limitations it puts on my image making. Rather than shooting raw and trying to edit later - which usually leads to a rabbit-hole of trying to maximize the potential of the file and not the image - I find that I capture what I want on the first go and make relatively few tweaks afterwards.

May I suggest trying the Acros film simulation. The RAW files are still full colour but you will see bw through the viewfinder. Capture One will also recognize and display the bw profile.

From what I've seen in my own wishful thinking window shopping, many 35mm lenses have a large enough projection to cover the GFX sensor (should be called 127 format instead of medium?). a vintage 58mm f/1.2 on the GFX will go a long way to scratching the shallow depth of field itch. There are also focal reducers for medium format lenses on GFX, adding a 0.7x crop. This is of particular interest to me; I love my Pentacon Six lenses, and would love a non-fiddly way to use them on digital.

The camera angles on your channel are always so unique, kudos for experimenting. I think in digital the slow methodical way of thinking comes in post processing where you can really work the photo to your liking, its definitely not like film and if you're searching for a film experience digital really doesn't get close except for something like a leica You could try adapting medium format lenses on the 100s if you can find an adapter, i think id make a great video and i haven't seen anyone try it Cheers

Wait so did you buy the gfx100s and the 80mm? If so will you switch your s1h for the gfx for your video setup? Since it's medium format and shoots 10bit and everything. The actual codec's efficiency compared to the s1h is trash though, with lots of desaturation when underexposed and macroblocking.

did you do anything after using the Nostalgic Negative profile on these? I find they're a little orange when I put the RAW into capture one and have to shift the mid-tones away from red, then I'm much happier. Classic Negative and ACROS+R are still perfect tho.

The best lenses for the system are 135 adapted which happen to cover the image area. The fuji lenses are a little too clinical. 200mm is the ideal portrait length on GFX, in my opinion.

I wonder about how the GFX50R was challenging to get that "medium format look" versus the 100S. As they have the same size sensor and lens mount, wouldn't simply using the 80mm f/1.7 on the 50R get that same look without dropping nearly $10k? Of course the resolution is halved, but aside from the resolution, as that "look" is more based on focal length, depth of field, and of course, aspect ratio.
@robiulahmed
@robiulahmed 3 жыл бұрын
Medium format look on these crop sensors is a myth - Emporer's new clothes type of stuff. The Phase One would probably have it, but you really need 6x6 and upwards to get that medium format look.
@JeffSmudde
@JeffSmudde 3 жыл бұрын
@@robiulahmed but even then, that “medium format look” itself is a myth itself, you can acheive that look on any camera if you crop accordingly, and with shallow dof photos, using a low enough f-stop to simulate that look. A 50mm full frame photo cropped to 4x5 looks nearly identical to a rb/rz67 medium format frame shot at 127mm (as 67 cameras dont actually shoot a 6x7 frame, its more like a baby 4x5 frame) Its all about choices made when making the image, but regardless you can achieve that “look” if you play your cards right.
@JeffSmudde
@JeffSmudde 3 жыл бұрын
Its all about equivalent field-of-view, take a gander at the Viewfinder Mark ii app and youll see how various cameras with various lenses cropped in to the same aspect ratio will allow for the same look if you nail which lens allows that look for each compared camera
@robiulahmed
@robiulahmed 3 жыл бұрын
@@JeffSmudde I see what you're saying and I sort of both agree and disagree. All the points you raise are valid for digital photography. However, having shot film on half frame, 35mm, 6x6 and 6x9 as well as having looked at lots of Hasselblad prints, I'd say that there is definitely a medium format look - but only for film. I forget the photographer's name....Peter something...he had a photo book called the Rock and Roll album and he passed away fairly recently. Anyway, his photos could only have been shot on film and the resolution far exceeded 35mm. Therefore, it could've only been shot on medium format. That's why people use that expression.
@JeffSmudde
@JeffSmudde 3 жыл бұрын
@@robiulahmed yeah it is more of a character thing than it is field of view, crop and focal length. Mamiya lenses have a particular character that pentaxs don’t, as hasselblads and leicas do as well, so in that regard, there is a particular “look” that is more affected by the lens than the size of the negative

@thegreaterconundrum
@thegreaterconundrum 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not george but you can achieve this look with any modern camera with the proper lens. You should consider if you find those monologues interesting because they're wide or because they're shot from above. The focal length isn't typical but i'm sure you've seen in around before, like in old 80s and 90s music videos. The top down perspective to me is the cool thing
