I was throwing out an old Ez-boy recliner. I noticed the bottom makes a really nice “lazy Suzan”that I flipped upside down sit the wheel on it and I can spin the wheel effortlessly while I paint.

That's perfect, I would love to use something like that

Looks pretty good, these newer style wheel are getting popular in the budget custom world because they are everywhere, people are buying them, refurbing them and then throwing a centercap or baby moons on them.

That was a really nice paint job considering the cheap gun and narrow spray pattern. I'm impressed. Do you recall how long it took until they were dry enough to handle? Oddly, that smoke gray is the same paint I used on my back porch! I'll use some hardener next time, and maybe the Japan dryer as well.

I believe I let them set out overnight. It was a couple weeks before I had time to get the tires mounted, but they were definitely solid. They did a couple hard years on the street, they still look excellent. The only problems with the paint were places I failed to prep it well and it flaked off. Otherwise, the paint itself is glass smooth and very tough

Ah yes, 7786 Gloss Smoke Gray. Excellent color. I use this color for my snow wheels.
@RiggsGarage Жыл бұрын
It's a really crisp color and stays clean nicely. Thanks for watching!
@suburbanator91 Жыл бұрын
@@RiggsGarage the only one thing you want to watch out for with that color, is that it can easily lose its gloss, especially if you use it on snow wheels. I advise spraying a few light coats of clear after the Gloss Smoke Gray cures. Since you have made the effort & investment to get a spray gun, Rust-Oleum Smoke Gray does come in a non-gloss version. You can do a base-coat/ clear-coat; it will not only be glossier, but, the layers flash quicker. Single stage paint is actually more tricky to deal with than doing a base-coat/ clear-coat.

@@suburbanator91 that sounds awesome, I shall experiment

I love mixing custom colors....like add a little black to the smoky gray for a dark gray. Or make any color you want!! I'd use a little more hardener though. I'm working on a 40 year old Craftsman 24 drawer, 2 piece tool chest....a whole lot of painting doing drawers inside out and all....Your wheels look awesome! Hardener is the trick, they will last!

did it even take half a quart to paint all 4? I may have to do this to my scion XB.
@RiggsGarage Жыл бұрын
Hey! Had a bit less than half a quart left. I did multiple coats on both sides of the 4 wheels

Just curious if you have any recommendations for bare aluminum wheels. I just had them sand blasted should I use a primer before spraying with gloss black Rust-Oleum? Thanks for any input
@RiggsGarage15 күн бұрын
You might check the recommendations, but usually you shoot a self-etching primer over bare metal as your base. Make sure the primer you use says it works on aluminum. Then you'll have a good tough base that bites into the metal

5 minutes or so, maybe up to 10. But it flashed to a pretty decent state to recoat it without runs pretty quickly the way I mixed this
