Jason i have been a handloader since i was 10 years old in 1967, a bullet castor since 1981, and shooting BP since the early 70s, i have several flintlocks and shoot a little bit. i have another friend that taught me something about 2 years ago. on the range we lube with 60% water 40% dawn dish soap. soak the patch and load, you can shoot all day with no fouling. for hunting i use beeswax and olive oil mix. hope this helps you.

Hi Jason, if you don't like flashes in the pan, you could install a touch hole liner. They are coned from the inside, getting your flash closer to the powder charge. Also, you could feather your touch hole. Take a small feather that the quill will fit in the touch hole and put it in the touch hole before each loading. Then remove it before priming the pan. Keep the powder away from the barrel so the flash can enter the open touch hole without restriction. The soft quill will not ware out your flash hole. This was done by the old timers. Ben shooting and building flintlocks for sixty years and still love it. Love your channel. Ron from vermont

This was very interesting to me. I have never shot a flintlock before, so I can definitely see why they jumped on the percussion cap train as soon as they invented them. You seem to have got your pan powder amount dialed in really good, cause it pretty much just goes Boom!... You mentioned maybe darkening your stock and I did something to my tomahawk handle that you might experiment with and see if it might be something you might would like to try on your stock... I saw a video where a guy was trying to make a guitar neck look like tiger striped maple, so I did his technique on my tomahawk. You wrap steel tie wire round and round the wood, randomly criss-crossing the wire really snug, then run a torch up and down, round and round, scorching the wood a little. The wire acts like a heat sink, so when you unwrap the wire, there are light streaks everywhere the wire was, so it looks tiger striped with a light stain over the top. And if you don't like the effect you get, you can just sand it lightly and that scorched look gets gone. I like how spiraling a ramrod looks over a candle flame too.... Your shirt looks good, too! Scratch ol Roscoe's ears for us!

@@SpiritoftheOutdoors another thing, Justin. I think I sent you a picture of one of my rifles. It was stained with red shoe dye. Then I mixed linseed oil and inletting black to go over the red the first coat of linseed oil. Over that I put several more coats of linseed oil. The stock came out a light mahogany and the maple stripe showed up but not too flashy. I also used some of that inletting black around some of the places where dirt and suet would collect over the years. Came out looking like a well cared for antique.

Flintlock rifles are very fun to shoot and hunt with. You will enjoy your build for many years. I recently built a Jim Kibler Southern Mountain Rifle kit in .32 caliber. Like yourself, I built it for small game. I agree with others about the touch-hole liner and the feather trick. I drilled a feather hole behind my trigger guard just to hold a feather for cleaning or holding the charge in the barrel if I can't prime the pan. I have a lot to learn but that's what makes it fun to me. Talk with you soon. Terry from NC.

Hey Justin! I enjoyed watching this one very much! Your .36 Rifle looked GOOD to me (Certainly considerably better than my first attempt at building a muzzleloading riifle!) The new shirt looked pretty cool as well!!! WOOF! Once you got the load and the rifle dialed in, and the rifle is doing it's part... the only variable is you... so claiming, "Operator Head Space" covers a multitude of sins! (Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! Don't ask me how I know that!) In the meantime... keep practicing and getting familiar with the rifle. You also might enjoy watching the You Tube channels of Mr. Bob McBride over at Black Powder TV (in Tennessee) and/or Mr. Steve Davis at Stillwater Bushcraft (in Ohio) for some tips & techniques that might serve you well! Ol' Roscoe looks like he is rarin' to go... and can't go for rarin'! Since you make some of your own powder... keep the really "fine" stuff for your Priming Horn and see if that doesn't help with the misfire/"klatching" issue! Keep plugging away at it... and thanks for sharing it with us! Well Done!

Didn't see any flinching. Which shows good control with those pan flashes. Blowing down the barrel is a valid black powder technique. The purpose was to keep the fouling moist and soft from the moisture in your breath. Safer with a breech loader, though 😊. Haven't run across the swab and string before. Good idea 👍. Regarding the pan flashes, several things to keep in mind. Pan powder level needs to be under the level of the touch hole. The touch hole needs to be clear. If filled up or covered over you'll get hang fires or pan flashes. Touch hole position should be just touching the top of the pan edges. I describe it as being in a "setting sun" position. The frizzen will naturally be covering the touch hole in this position. Regarding the pan powder, 4F was/is a target shooters technique. And it IS the best way to go, but it ISN'T mandatory. Pan powder can be 4F, 3F, 2F, or 1.5F. All work. 1F works most of the time, but you'll get some hang fires with that. 4F, or Null B is the "best" or most efficient which is why its always recommended, BUT it isn't mandatory. DEFINITELY keep the ramrod strokes short - 6 inches or so. The first time you run a broken ramrod into your hand, you'll never forget it. I use both hands, one after the other, to speed things up if necessary. Keep an eye out on your surroundings. One of your shots sent a large spark several feet to your right. While not likely, that could potentially stay "live" long enough to start a fire in dry timber. Cause of such a spark is probably related to the position of the flint in the cock. "Straight and square" to the frizzen will eliminate that issue. If your touch hole isn't replaceable, consider making it replaceable. They do "wear out" and having a replaceable touch hole is very advantageous. I noticed you charged the pan with 3 pushes of your primer horn. If that dispenses 1 grain, that's fine. If your pan primer dispenses 3 grains, that's probably more than needed, and may even contribute to ignition issues. In closing, believe it or not, a mixture of 50/50 Dawn dish soap and water makes a patch lube that will allow you to shoot all day long without stopping to clean. I don't care for it in a hunting situation - potential powder fouling - but on a target range, you can shoot all day without stopping.

Keeping the touch-hole clear is the most important thing for consistant ignition. Most people drill thier touch-holes with a 1/16th drill bit. Thats pretty standard. Over time the back flash from the charge will erode the touch-hole so its bigger and bigger. When it gets so worn that you get a flash out the touch-hole a second before the gun fires then its time for a touch-hole liner. I dont want to make the wear worse so I glue a two inch piece of the largest size bronze wound guitar string into a short piece of deer horn to use for a nipple pick. The bronze is softer than the barrel steel and it wont open up your touch-hole like a steel pick will. I just run the guitar string up into the touch hole and rasp out the fouling. Then i prime the pan. Where i live the average shot on small game is about 20 yards. I like to sight my rifles so i hold on the jaw of a squirrel below his ear and have the ball hit about 3/4 of an inch higher. Or hit between the eye and the ear. Theres lots of things you will learn on your own over time. I can't pack 40 years of black powder shooting into one comment so thats my thoughts for the day. Thanks for all you do. Appreciate you brother.

interesting video. One suggestion, it is safer to load a flintlock with the hammer down and frizzen open. Not an absolute "must do" thing but it is best to have the hammer fully down at rest. Then much harder to make a mistake and send a ramrod and ball through your hand while loading.
