Shooting the original P56 Enfield rifle

The first black powder rifle I learnt to shoot was a P53 Enfield made in 1857. Even though I've moved on to flintlock rifle I still love that old piece, so much still to learn and always a joy on the range. Love the video and really enjoy the research you go into on the rifle history.

The 2 bands enfield is one of of the most beautiful musket all time, so are its small bore 2 bands siblings such as withworth, henry, snider, ect. They all share the same stock, lock and barrel bands.

Excellent video. I will try the 40 grain load in my Pedersoli 1861 Springfield. I have the 575213 mold in both old and new styles. Even have a wadcutter mold. Makes nice round holes and is accurate. If you put some Neatsfoot oil on that sling, it will look much more authentic.

I have an Enfield. I have live fired it once. He had bullets a hair too big, which made loading the bullet a pain. It shot well, not much of a recoile that I couldn't compensaite for. I'm snagging my own bullets,

I have an 1853 Enfield clone by Pedersoli. It is a booger to shoot accurately. A .575 with a thinner skirt works ok if you don't use too much powder to blow the skirt. You just never can find a bullet that works correctly it seems to me.

If you can mount even a minor optic, like 2x or 3x, trying shooting a ladder test at about 300 meters. If you are not familiar with this type of test google it and you will find it will save you an enormous amount of powder and ammunition while looking for a load that your rifle will like. Used it on my recent AR15 and savage model 12 6,5 creedmoor rifles.

I have a Enfield musketoon, albeit a reproduction, but I can tell you that thing is accurate to levels it shouldn't be compared to more modern guns. I would imagine one of the full length muskets to be just as fun to shoot.

Hello, I have gone back to watching this excellent Video (and quite a few of your others too) as I have modified my loading regime for my P53 Enfield. I watched an article analysing the various Minie Bullet designs. The news was that due to the thin skirt of the original Minie (I wanted to get a good shooting performance with the original) its best not to use more than 50 grains of Black Powder. More than that can have the bullet continuing to change shape as it exits the muzzle (As seen using a high speed camera). I really like the tool you use for lubing your bullets, would you kindly give me the name of the manufacturer, thank you. Best Regards Chris (UK)

Excellent video, like always! On 07:10 you say that "to keep accuracy for at least 13 shots". What about then absolute maximum amount of shots that is possible to make in one session? Even if the accuracy will suffer, how many shots can you make, until it's impossible to ram the bullet down anymore?

I'm surprised you're using Swiss 1.5 powder. Most N-SSA shooters are using 3F (Swiss #2) as a propellant. 42 grains is consistent with our best accuracy loads.

Mr. Nemeth, at 6:23 we see a small cavity, a void space, at the apex of the base hollow. Years ago I wasted many an hour casting that same bullet, the Lyman 575213 "old style" for my 1863 Springfield, and I never did find a technique that prevented that d*mned void space. Do you have any casting secrets you'd like to share?

Minié bullets with deep cavities are a mess to cast I agree. It is hard to find the right method for a mold. I use a Lee furnace with a bottom valve, so I can use the pressure of the molten lead t make a complete fill, but still I have around 5% faulty bullets. The bullet at 6:23 is faulty by the way. That's why it was not fired :)

Good stuff in here, particularly the relatively small amount of powder, something to try. But why no loading tube/funnel? Wouldn't the use of one of these reduce another variable i.e. it would more consistently deposit the powder to the powder chamber without so much sticking to the sides of the barrel due to contact with the fouling?
