If only I had the money. I've seem one of those in a case but didn't get to play around with it. That Luger style toggle action amazed me. I wish someone would make a reproduction of this with a reasonable price tag.
@sandbergmachineandtool62268 жыл бұрын
yea, me too, but no. the complexity of this action does not relate to cost effectiveness. The only way they would ever be more affordable is mass production, and there's just no demand for that.
@EmpressTiffanyOfBrittany7 жыл бұрын
Not to mention the action is so slow it would make for the slowest automatic in the world.
@dtnetlurker6 жыл бұрын
Never ever gonna happen. Mass production of this action is so complicated and needs so much fitting that that's why the only company to make a reproduction of the German Luger P08 went out of business. It is also the main reason why (in addition to slam fires, failure to feed and failure of the breech toggle link to close) that the Pederson lost the contract. It was made up of 99 parts that had to have very tight and perfect tolerances to function, while the Garand did not need quite as tight a tolerances for it's action to function perfectly. The Garand only had 60 parts and was later refined down to 55. Less production time and cost by far. Also the Garand was very easy to quickly field strip and clean or repair out in the field, while the Pederson was a complicated mess and really couldn't be fully stripped out in the field. A bore brush cleaning was about all a soldier could do out on the battle zone. All this was tested and considered in the trials and the right choice was made.

I'm surprised, that I didn't hear anyone mention what was probably one of the biggest concerns about this rifle as it went through the testing process: the need for cartridge lubrication. Being basically a delayed blowback, it suffered from the same problem that other guns using that system in conjunction with powerful cartridges did: violent extraction that could tear the heads off the cases, as the extractor attempted to pull the case out of a chamber when the pressure was still quite high. This wasn't really solved until late in WWII when the Germans learned that fluting the chamber took care of this issue without the need to lubricate the cartridge and ease extraction. Before that guns using delayed blowback and rifle-power cartridges had to lubricate the cartridges. Some, like a number of Japanese machine guns, as well as the Italian Breda 30 used a cartridge oiler built into the gun. Pedersen's solution was to use ammo coated with a dry wax. But cartridge lubrication is far from desirable, as the lube quite often picks up grit and dirt and loads it into the chamber with the round, with attendant effects on reliability and wear. Also there were concerns with the wax liquifying in hot climates and making this problem worse, or even running off the cartridges altogether in storage and leaving them dry when needed. What really killed the Pedersen's chances at adoption by the US army was MacArthur nixing the switch to the .276 cartridge, for economic reasons, and Garand, unlike Pedersen, having already worked up prototypes in .30-06. But the fact that Pedersen's gun could not be made to work reliably without cartridge lubrication was also a factor that probably played some part as well.
@BrianFulmer9 жыл бұрын
Darren O'Connor Well stated and right on the money. A hack job requiring goofy ammunition to function was NOT a viable choice. Pretty is not the same as functional. Great job on the video segment, I subscribed based on this episode.
@WhenDoesTheVideoActuallyStart11 ай бұрын
The Pedersen cartridge had absolutely no issues with picking up dirt, since it was a dry wax. Neither did it have a problem with warm climates, since e.g. microcrystalline wax can have a melting point of 90°C. Cartridge dry lubrication still deserves investigation today.

You guys are SO lucky to have been able to fire this rifle! I ENVY you! The ammo for this rifle couldn't have been very easy to get. I've never seen a round for it! Likely what doomed this rifle is when MacArthur said that any new rifle developed must be capable of using the 30-06 cartridge so the millions of rounds left over from WWI could be used. The M1 Garand was changed over with relative ease. I'm not sure how easy it would be to convert this rifle to 30-06.

So, why did it lose out to the m1?
@tfbtv9 жыл бұрын
+Drunk Not I Am Basically, Pedersen built his rifle around his cartridge (the .276 Pedersen round) and so did Garand. However, Garand built a rifle in .30-06 as well. At some point, the US decided it would be foolish to adopt a new round what with all the ammo leftover from WWI, and since Garand had a rifle already in .30-06 it gave him a leg up. The Garand also does not require waxed ammunition.

@CMURPHPHOTOG8 жыл бұрын
+TFB TV My understanding from information at the Springfield Armory Museum National Historic Site is the Pedersen was rejected due to jamming which was solved by waxed cartridges. The U.S. Army in trials determined waxed cartridges unacceptable under battle conditions. Also water from rain or dirt /mud could be propelled into the shooters face by the toggle . General McArthur made the decision to use the 30 06 round due to the amount of surplus ammo. I may be wrong ( I live in Springfield but haven't been to the Armory in a few years) but I believe the decision had already been made to go into production of the M1 when the order to change to the 06 came through. I do know the records at the Armory say waxed cartridges were the reason to reject the Pedersen. Also the M1s creators name is pronounced Ga rand like rand in Rand Paul. At least that's how his name has always been pronounced here in Springfield MA., just sayin.

The action on this rifle Is too freaking cool lol. I like how It lifts up, then folds when It cycles. I'v never seen that before. I just found out about this rifle while looking up some pictures of the M1. So I just had to search for It on youtube. Thanks for the video..

The sound is awful in this video, it's all over the place. I can tell it's really windy there but you need to invest in some better sound recording equipment.

I remember going to the range with my uncle when I was a little kid and he brought a Pederson PB rifle out to shoot. I was to young to appreciate what it was, but I remember shooting one round out of it, I was so young I had a hard time holding it up and that one shot killed my shoulder. he passed away a few years ago and his kids sold off his collection.

Ian, please tell me you have more slow-mo footage of this beauty coming. Great videos, I was dreaming about something like this since your review on Forgotten Weapons. Edit: I just saw that there IS (on the FW website)...silly me.

The Pedersen Rifle is basically a Springfield M1903 Rifle converted to fire semi-automatically.

+Zim Loki you might be thinking of the pedersen device
@zimloki98019 жыл бұрын
+TFB TV I know, but the Pedersen Rifle and the Springfield Rifle do look similar. Don't you agree?
@tfbtv9 жыл бұрын
Zim Loki I can't say that I do.

+TFB TV Yes he was thinking of that device in fact you could say he was thinking of the M-1903 MKI rifle. Because that device fits into that one rifle.

Opinions aren't facts, it's just my personal preference. I'm referring to the aesthetic look of the gun not it's performance.
@klover2248 жыл бұрын
Sam H oh I know but it's not my opinion that the garand is better looking that's a fact it's my opinion the carbine looks better

Nice, thanks for the video. I am editing, because I answered my own question by watching one of your other videos. I was confusing the Pederson Device, and the Pederson rifle. Now I know. I had heard much about, but never seen a Pederson device, and I had never heard of the Pederson rifle.

Both look mechanically similar, and the 1906 was based on the Luger pistol.
