Just a couple of slow-motion shots that show what it's like to shoot .460 S&W ammo out of a Smith & Wesson 460XVR revolver. The particular loads shot were a Hornady Custom 200gr FTX, and an Underwood 300-grain XTP.

Wouldn't be a problem for me, my wrists get plenty of a workout every few hours...

I've been looking hard at that same PC XVR for a hunting backup vs. toothy critters...that said, wow! Beautiful ring of fire and a not so beautiful 90 degree recoil pitch!

By the way, your ammo reviews are just awesome. I selected my 9mm carry ammo based on your reviews. Any time I think about ammo performance I check to see if you have reviewed the round in question. Thanks for your hard work on testing this for us, and I do think it is very hard work.

That looks insane. Even if it's not painful, that kind of flip just looks way beyond anything I'd want in a handgun. Not that I wouldn't try it. I'd DEFINITELY try it!

That ring of fire almost looks photo shopped, very cool.

Man, the rings are impressive, but it's really something else to see how the hand transfers motion once it can't go back anymore. Looks incredibly painful.
@ShootingTheBull4109 жыл бұрын
Surprisingly not painful at all. I expected some pain today (the day after) and there really isn't any. It's powerful and intimidating and all, but it's a well-designed firearm and even after rattling off a couple dozen of the .454's and .460's, I can't say that anything really hurt...

Thanks for sharing. I don't think I'll ever purchase one of those. I'll stick with the M69 as my largest bore...

if the barrel was longer it would not kick nearly as bad

I finally got over flinching when I really started competing with (reasonable) handgun loads. No way in hell I would ever shoot that. It would undo 10 years of progress. :-)

Let's see some gel shots with this round through 4layers of denim and maybe some other things ?

Ever tried to lock your support hand thumb over the first part of your shooting hand thumb, not the tip of it, the part before the first knuckle from the wrist. The tip of your support hand thumb should be over the web of your shooting hand between the thumb and index, it helps a lot with the rise preventing you to lose your support hand grip. Make sure you lock that thumb and keep your support hand wrist hard. With those big calibers you can't just use the grip you're used to with smaller revolvers it's a different animal and as seen in your video you end up shooting that monster with one hand when you really need two. Try it ;)

Cool video, but I'd opt for a Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70 or 450 Marlin.

Thinking about getting one, will the snubby nose n all how was it handling distance shots? Obviously not as well as the longer barrels. But what distance would you say is a fair kill shot with some practice?

Maybe, a lot more support hand? At least you didn't break your head. I'm not saying, I could have done better. I'm willing to see how I would take it.

How does it compare to the 44 magnum?
@ShootingTheBull4109 жыл бұрын
Haven't tried a direct comparison, but in general, the .44 is a much less powerful cartridge. A .454 Casull can deliver 50% to 100% more energy than a .44, and the .460 S&W is even more powerful. Consider that Hornady's product line shows a 200-grain bullet in .44 Magnum at 1500 fps, and the same weight in .460 S&W is listed at 2,200 fps(!) In terms of energy, the .44 Magnum is delivering about 999 ft/lbs, the .460 S&W is 2,149 ft/lbs. .44 Magnum is no slouch, it's a plenty powerful round in its own right, but it just isn't in the same class as the .460.

Any chance we might see some .22 Magnum gel tests from a 6" or longer barrel?

Not anytime soon, I don't have any firearms like that to test from.

If you decide to get one take a look at the Taurus 992. I have put thousands of rounds through mine without a single issue. Simple swap of the cylinder for .22LR/.22WMR. I ran some Chronograph test, but don't have gel.

How does the recoil of the 454 vs 460 vs 500 stack up?
@jojosscooters9 жыл бұрын
In similar size and weight handguns, of course.
@ShootingTheBull4109 жыл бұрын
I tested four calibers from this pistol: .45 Schofield, .45 Colt, .454 Casull, and .460 S&W. I can say that the Schofield was like firing a .22LR -- and that's 180 grains of lead being flung! The .45 Colt had mild recoil. The .454 Casull was much harder, very stout, a total eye-opener. And the .460 was surprisingly much harsher than the .454. I don't have any way to objectively measure it, but subjectively, it was very much more noticeable. A lot. I have no comparable-size gun to compare the .500 to.
@jojosscooters9 жыл бұрын
ShootingTheBull410 I have only fired a Casull. I owned a Super Redhawk with a 7.5 inch barrel, I think. I thought the recoil was harsh. Much more than my Super Blackhawk in 44 mag. The Casull would periodically get my middle finger on recoil with the trigger guard. Felt like it bruised the bone. Hurt like hell! The Redhawk was a joy to shoot with 45 Colt. This 460 you reviewed being able to shoot 45 Colt, 454 Casull, and 460 S&W is really versatile. Anyone should enjoy shooting the 45 Colt from this revolver, so it is a pretty safe buy for people. I have always lover S&W revolvers. Carried a MDL 28. I still have a MDL 19 with 2.5 inch barrel and a 625-45ACP with 3.0 inch barrel. Love them both, but don't carry them.
