Jeff Quinn ( www.gunblast.com ) tests the Weatherby Mark V Accumark 6.5-300 Weatherby Magnum Bolt-Action Rifle.
Shooting the latest Mark V was a real pleasure. The rifle is loud, but no more so than many other cartridges. Recoil is soft. While the rifle does move when fired, it causes no pain at all. Many rifles will slap the shooter’s check, but the Weatherby stock design eliminates that problem, with the rifle recoiling away from the shooter’s face. Very nice.
The Weatherby Accumark chambered for the new 6.5-300 Weatherby Magnum is a superb rifle for long-range shooting, whether at game or inanimate targets. It shoots flat, hits hard, and is wonderfully accurate. The Mark V is built in Paso Robles, California, and is built right. You never regret buying the best.

My Weatherby Mark V Accumark in 338 Lapua is simply amazing. Once I decide on cartridge (308 winchester or 257 weatherby), I will be buying another Mark V. This is the sweetest rifle that I have ever shot, letalone owned.

I am sure the only reason you had to bring up the 338 Lapua is you are a teenager KZbin groupie Parrot moth talker, and every groupie Parrot mouth talker has to bring up the 338 Lapua or bring up 45-70 or lead bullet Buffalow bore or hunting Alaskan brown bears with Glock 10 mm home defense handguns is the most nonsense moron things seen brought up in comments. The Weatherby 338-378 magnum produce even more speed and power than the 338 Lapua because the 338-378 has more powder capacity.

Smoothness means nothing for accuracy in a rifle it is just a common KZbin groupie Parrot talkers' nonsense. At 64 years old and guiding hunters since 1978 I've owned allot of rifles and built allot of rifles. The CZ 500 I own in 9.3x62 Mauer is so accurate I can call the shot on target and the modern Mauser 98 action isn't some glass smooth action but what CZ did was very precision work to get this rifle to shoot the way it does. I own a AR 10 I have done in 375-300 WSM so do AR 10s have smooth actions NO! but this AR 10 in 375 -300 WSM shoots near same bullet hole groups at 150 yards using 375 - 270 grain bullets with 68 grains of 4064 powder producing the same power as a 375 H&H magnum. I will take accuracy any day over some fad rifle that all it offers is polished up bolt and action + barrel.

I’ve got a 257 WBY MKV and, just like the rifle in this vid, it just leaps when you light up that can of powder. So what I did was put a pound of lead shot in the fore end and 1.5 lb at the top and in the rear of the buttstock. Almost eliminated the muzzle jump. Tamed it down really nicely. Obviously not an ultra lightweight anymore but I personally prefer the way it shoots now to before adding the weight. Makes it more accurate for me too. And still only puts it into the weight range that most non-lightweight hunting rifles are today.

Poor Barrel life. Roy Weatherby did promote his monte carlo stock. In reality the stock accentuates the recoil. I have collected and hunted and shot Weatherby Mark 5's for 40 years. I have aftermarket stocks that are straight combed. The Recoil comes straight back. The Mark 5 stock pummel's my cheekbone. 2 stocks: The old Roberts high comb rollover with Palm swell and Rem Sendero stock handle recoil the best.
@Gunblastdotcom
@Gunblastdotcom 2 жыл бұрын
The Monte Carlo stock works for some shooters, but not all. As for barrel life - yes, when compared to a 223 Remington or such, but for practical purposes this is not a high-volume rifle. Barrel life should not be a problem, especially if you do not allow the barrel to get too hot.

@@Gunblastdotcom You can expect 800 to 1000 rounds with the 6.5-300 Weatherby. It shoots a 130 grain bullet 3475 feet per second with a 26-inch Barrel. My 270 Weatherby shot a 130 grain bullet at 3400 feet per second chronograph. With a 24-inch Barrel. I put two thousand rounds through it and it still had first-class accuracy. 6.5-300 WAY over bore. Huge amount of powder 98 gr. of H2O for little or no gain. The game animal would not know it was hit by the 6.5-300 or the 270 Weatherby. This one-upmanship in velocity is to sell rifles to the younger generation. They have to keep coming up with something new.

even a .308 is fine for a plain long range shooting fun where the distances are known and you have all the helpful tools and you know the ballistics of your bullet. Flat shooting cartridge as this has its use for hunting situations where distances are unknown, but your MPBR is say 250-300 yards on medium game, you don't really need to carry a laser rangefinder or have turrets in your scope for zeroing in.
@LS-oh8kv
@LS-oh8kv 5 жыл бұрын
No, but this rifle setup appears to be made for long range. 308 doesn’t have enough oomph to drop game much past 450-500 yards. That’s where the magnum comes in, not as much for flatter shooting as much as hitting the same as a 308 does at 100 yards, at 500 yards. Flat shooting also means for target shooting at 1000+ you have enough adjustment on the scope to make the shot without ridiculous holdover. It also keeps the bullet supersonic longer, meaning the bullet doesn’t destabilize allowing you to stay accurate for further ranges. And also allows you to shoot the heaviest, highest BC bullets at a high velocity. Sure it doesn’t have 5000 or even 2000 round barrel life, but that’s the cost of performance. Check out the Long Range Hunting forums where most of the guys shoot game from regular distances (say 50 yards) all the way out to 1000 yards on game, and up to 2 miles on steel/paper. I don’t shoot at game past 800 because that’s the longest I can hit every shot (I practice a lot) but there’s a lot of cool info on that site. 250-300 is pretty much point blank for most modern rifle calibers

That's a beautiful piece of long range hunting rifle.. I can only imagine how good that would be say, on a South African weld taking down impalas and such at ridiculous distances.. And for us Europeans, that msrp is a bargain for a piece of kit like that.. About the same as a standard grade Sako 85 .308win..

But the smokin' barrel at 3500 fps didn't last very long. If you get about 1600 rounds out of it, you will be lucky, as the same as the 264 Winchester Mag. That is why the 264 never was that popular. Tom, I opted for the model 25 Walking Varminter in .223, and synthetic stock. I had a Nikon Prostaff 3-9 x 40 BDC scope mounted and sighted by my Gunsmith / Dealer. What little shooting I have done so far has given me groups of around 1.5" down to 1" at 100 metres on average and bench rested. ( that's approx. 109 yards and I'm not that good a shot, free standing ) The rifle I have has the heavier bull type barrel, and as such makes it a tad heavier that perhaps I would like, if on an all day hunt , but it is a good shooter. I am very pleased with this one.

Have any idea how many times I have heard the term "barrel burner" when referring to my 264 win mag? I have 9 Coues Whitetail that qualify for B&C but don't want to pay the money. All killed with that ole barrel burner. Take your old lob rifle to the range and shoot it while it's hot and watch the barrel fade. Heat, heat heat. I shoot a few rounds a year out of my 264 at the range mostly testing a new powder or bullet I hear/read about. Then one round for deer season 😁. I have a sling that holds 4 rounds and 3 in the mag. That's what I take.

What's a Coues Whitetail? Sorry if that's a dumb question just never heard of it. How much does it cost to get a rack scored? I grew up hunting muzzleloader so never understood those guys you here out there on opening day firing strings of 4-7 bullets. If I don't kill it on the first shot I'm upset with myself.

@@Parents_of_Twins Twins? Sounds busy to me. Coues deer (pronounced Cowes) are in Arizona, New Mexico and Northern Mexico. They are a small cousin to the Whitetail Deer that populates most of the US. Coues are known to live in rocky, rough, steep canyons of the Sonoran Desert. I only know of less than a handful taken with a muzzleloader (but what I know isn't much) Long range, over 300 yard shots are the norm. Flat shooting calibers using high BC bullets are the norm here. Me stalking close enough to take a large mature Coues buck doesn't seem likely. It's hard to stalk quietly out here and anywhere for me really. Really good binoculars and a flat shooting rifle with enough energy left at 600-700 yards to drop a 125 lb deer dead in it's tracks is what almost everyone shoots. The Weatherby 6.5x300 has become very popular with the Coues hunters.

@@rramz7017 It is pretty busy. First six months was pretty tough after that just noisy. Been a lot of fun. I did all my hunting in Northern Wisconsin where a 200 yard shot is pretty long. I've shot the muzzle loader out to 400 yards and it still carries enough power to punch through a steel target. My Dad killed a coyote way back at that distance without issues but he's a better shot than I am.

@@Parents_of_Twins My hat is off to you. I have never hunted with a muzzleloader. Several Border Patrol guys here hunt Elk in the northern part of the state. I shot one of theirs at the range at 50 yards. It was sighted for a hundred. It almost kicked me off the bench. When the smoke cleared there was a huge hole about 3" high and pretty much centered on the bullseye and that was it, enough for me. No way I could kill anything at 200 yards. I have a couple of mules. I have never had one kick me but I'm thinking it would be about the same as shooting that gun.

For that distance, that is an excellent rifle; 7mm Wby Mag at that distance, on pronghorn, is near perfection. And, as you likely know, for a pronghorn shot, that gun is capable of much longer distances. It's just flat out good. I'm starting to research the feasibility of a 7mm cased in .378 now (7mm-.378 / .284-.378). That's going to be a 1500 yard gun. I'm trying to scratch out upper 3,000s at the muzzle and perhaps break 4,000 at the muzzle. I haven't started building yet; still going over the numbers. But, it'll be a Weatherby. Thanks for the post. It's good to see somebody utilizing the range that that caliber is capable of. One last note - the Weatherby 7mm is actually a 7.2 mm which makes it even better. Win and Rem might be 7.2 mm also but not with the .378 Weatherby case.

If you're going to shoot long range (500+ yards), you obviously need to understand the ballistics of the round you're using and how much it drops at each range you shoot. You also need to use a scope with ballistic turrets to adjust for the bullet drop. So, who cares if the round is faster and drops slightly less? I can dial 12 MOA of adjustment just as easily as I can dial 6. To me, it's far more important to choose a bullet with a high ballistic coefficient than a gun shooting 3,400 fps. As you said, Weatherby is all about selling people on their high velocity offerings.

I can't speak from experience bud but I hear ya. 338 Lapua...just the name gives me a hand jibber. I have shotten neither so I would have to do so with each. I will say I've shot a 270 WB mag my entire adult life. (22 hornet, 243 b4 that when young). I will always trust a Weatherby gun until proven different. I would venture to guess this video is made for my mindset. Just a secret but I've been wrong b4.

19 inches down at 500 yards if you zero at 300 yards for about 360 yard point blank range (the trajectory of the bullet is never more than 3 or 4 inches higher or lower than the straight line between the scope & whatever the crosshairs are on - no adjustments needed for elevation/range between the gun & the P.B.R.). If you zero this gun at 100 yards, you will have about 30" drop at 500. But that is silly with a cartridge that is this flat shooting.

So many comments on this cartridge and rifle are people whining about barrel life. That reminds me of someone complaining that it costs $200.00 to replace the battery on a fine Swiss watch but costs $5.00 to replace one on a watch from Kmart. There is nothing wrong with the Kmart watch but higher performance levels will always include higher maintenance costs.

That barrel won't last much longer than about 500-1000 rounds. Even standard 300WM doesn't last much longer than 500 rounds. Those magnum rounds and necked down rounds are over bored and over pressured. Eats the throat and the rifling right out of the barrel. I prefer traditional rounds such as 308 or 30-06. Cheap, accurate, low recoil, long range, hard hitting, ammo is easy to find, and the barrel will last upwards of 10,000 rounds.

Salty Steel Couldn't agree more ,270win ,280 rem, 7mm08, 30-06 Springfield ,all great cartridges, good barrel life accurate and good case life . These overbored weatherbies are really for the alpha males at the local range .

Hahaha, 300wm lasts only 500 rounds does it? What a stupid statement. Plus if you use this rifle for its intended purpose, and you're not a shit shot, 500 rounds is pretty much 400-450 taken deer. Through years of hunting seasons.
