Shooting with Askar 103 0.6X Reducer at F4! How fast is it really?

In this video, I put the Askar 103 APO Refractor Telescope with a 0.6x reducer to the test to see just how good it is. This incredible lens allows you to shoot up to three times faster and widens your field of view to an impressive 420mm.
I'll be sharing some new insights that I've discovered since my last video and showcasing the results of the star performance and the flatness of the field that this telescope produces. I also show a method of how to unscrew a tight telescope focuser in order to convert this scope to F4.

Nice video. I have the same scope and accessories. Same difficulty with getting the focuser and next section off, it was a bit difficult to remove. Harbor Freight much cheaper for the strap wrench. I really like my scope no issues with my stars either.

Your data is very clean, at 0.6x I think the stars look great! I'm still trying to decide between the 103apo and the 120apo.

The strapwrench is an essential tool in astrophotography 🙂. I'd suggest to buy a second one to make your life easier. Instead of using your mount as a workbench (😱) you can place the ota on a flat surface, use one strapwrench to secure it and the other to twist.

May I ask you one question regarding the 103 please: Would you prefer the x1 Flattener or the x0.8 reducer???

Of course you can. If you don't need the 700mm focal length then for sure the .8x reducer for faster photo speeds

What brand of filter wheel are you using - that looks small for the Askar.

Will any filter have influence on the 55mm distance to the Sensor??

Yes, if you want to get the specific backfocus distance to add you can calculate that by taking the filter thickness you are using and divide it by 3.

How would that compare to the Starizona version I wonder, also do you shoot OSC so we can see how it works for CA?

I've never shot through a Starizona Apex so I'm sorry I can't tell ya. I mentioned in this video that would be my next thing to shoot in OSC to see how well it focuses the colors in one spot. I mainly shoot mono but I think it would be worth doing for OSC shooters.

I suppose it's not fair to ask why you didn't just get the askar V. Considering the cost of all the reducers etc. Maybe I'll re-visit Niko's comparison video. Either way, it gives some serious food for thought.

Larger aperture would be my guess, and way more faster with the 0.6
