i have a 2017 Mazda3. It has been a great car. At 100,000 miles I sent in a oil sample to see how the engine was wearing. results showed fuel in the oil but withing spec. The next oil sample came with fuel above specification. The Mazda Dealer did diagnose the problem and after the last oil sample I sent in my problem is solved. The problem was the High pressure fuel pump. It is no cheap fix. Total bill 1800 dollars. I am glad I decided to send in a oil sample. It may have saved my engine.

Nice! I bought a new Mazda3 way back in 2008, and overall, it has been a great car. I drove it almost 170,000 miles with minimal repairs other than basic maintenance. The motor and transmission were still doing fine, but unfortunately it was never garaged and lived its entire life in New England, so the salty winters were really taking their toll. The body panels were disintegrating, and parts of the suspension were rusting and breaking. My mechanic pointed out a half dozen other things that I was about to lose to the rust, so this week, I traded it in (for almost nothing) and got a 2024 Mazda3 hatch! I hope it will last me just as long and be just as reliable as my 1st generation, and so far, I'm in love with it. What a good looking car with an even prettier interior! I'm happy to hear yours is still treating you well after 105k.

I've been drawn in by the Mazda brand for years ever since they got out of fords grasp. You can just tell they're going above and beyond. That doesn't just mean specs, I'm talking longevity and durability. I'm between a used Lexus (probably 2014 or older, 100k miles or less) or a semi used Mazda (2016+ with maybe 80k miles or less) for my next car. They're a really good deal... I've had fantastic luck with Lexus, but I love what Mazda has done as a brand. They really seem to love and care for their customers. That is something that most brands can't say nowadays. Thank you so much for this review, great food for thought!

The thing about direct injection is no fuel touches the valves & intake. The carbon deposit is mostly oil vapors from the crankcase ventilation & exhaust gas recirculation valves. The fuel cleaner won’t touch the valves (gas is a great solvent for cleaning carbon). CRC valve cleaner is gasoline based with detergents and oils. I use CRC valve cleaner. You just need to spray it into the intake After the MAF (will need a helper to maintain 2k rpm idle). Don’t let it touch the MAF, or you will need a new one. I’ve been using it on my 2017 Audi SQ5 (120k miles) every year(twice a year since 100k). Just did a borescope on the valves & pistons. They look perfectly clean (they have a carbon buildup problem on valves & binds up the piston rings, causing oils burning & bore damage$$). I have a 2021 CX5 as a 2nd car. Thanks for the informative video. Good luck on the next 100k miles!

There's also a loud, low-pitched drone from the rear differential or driveline that starts at 65 mph and goes away above 80 mph. Both these things are common issues. I hope the rear diff doesn't blow because I'm reading a lot of reports about blown rear diffs on the Mazda sub-Reddits regarding the turbo models.

You're reaching that difficult decision time with this car! I absolutely LOVE taking reliable cars as far they will go, I think it's so cool to see just how many miles they can take and how many years you can bond with it until the wheels fall off (figuratively of course). Yet the difficulty comes with the current used car market. I've seen this particular Mazda 3 going for $16k-18k with roughly the same mileage as you. That would be an INSANE discount for you towards a new CX-50! What I'm trying to say is that I would love to see you take this thing to 200k and wouldn't blame you one bit - it's the frugal thing to do and it really is cool - but by getting overly sentimental and overly frugal you risk transmission or even engine failure, and your new car will end up costing you A LOT MORE once your Mazda 3 loses it's current $17k value. Either way, I wish you luck, your series on this car has been great content!

I haven't bent a wheel but here in NW Ohio I hit a pothole on a rough road under construction (to finally fix all the potholes) and it popped my tire, then proceeded to chip / damage the rim on the other potholes / rough surface. The rim wasn't bent but it took a beating, and I got it replaced under an outside warranty coverage. I also popped a front tire on train track pothole once, rim was fine that time though. So far everything else has been wonderful with this car, only issue I've had was the battery died at 2 years and it does have a bit of paint chips. but mine is polymetal gray so the chips aren't super noticeable, I'm def going to fix them up soon and eventually get PPF. The manual transmission has been amazing as well. I also agree on the CX-50. If I ever get a larger vehicle its either going to be a CX-50 or some older used pickup truck for the utility, and I wouldn't get rid of my Mazda3.

I have a 2021 turbo hatch at 6'1", 195 lbs and don't have any issues. Of course I think of my car just like Mustang, Camaro, 911 etc owners do...and that is: two seater with rear seats if you must have more than one passenger. In the 4 years I've had my car I can only think of two times someone rode in the back, and as long as the front seat passenger cooperates (and rear passenger isn't too tall) the rear seat is just fine for short trips.
@feralkitty335 ай бұрын
So it was the front seat I found cramped. I like elbow room and had none XD
@jbm08665 ай бұрын
@@feralkitty33 I can see that being an issue for some people, for sure. Although I'm technically a "large" man at over 6 feet and nearly 200 lbs, my body is relatively narrow so I dont feel cramped. I also drive with two hands on the wheel unless I'm on a long, straight interstate highway drive so most of the time only the tip of my elbows touch the door armrest and center console lid. I will concede that of all the compact sedans/hatchbacks the Mazda 3 is down on interior space numbers wise, but I think other attributes of the interior more than make up for it. Anyone who regularly carries backseat passengers (or have kids in carseats) should definitely buy something else, or even move up to midsized sedans/crossovers.

If I were making this decision it would be either selling this car (or trade-in) to get a 2024 turbo hatch. Back in December 2020 when everyone was quarantining at home and car dealers were desperate...I traded in a 2016 VW GTI SE for a 2021 Mazda 3 turbo hatch with premium package. I got a screaming good deal at just over $33k all in, and a fair trade-in as well. (Rare, I usually recommend selling private.) Of course if you want to stick with Mazda and get something a bit different, the CX-50 you mentioned or the CX-30, but personally I would get the turbo version no matter which you choose. Yes the gas mileage won't be as good (I have gotten a hair over 37mpg on a highway trip, not bad😎) but I think the effortless power when you need it is worth it. Sure you don't really need the extra power if most of your driving is city or suburbs, but if you hit the open road it comes in handy...especially if your trip includes elevation/mountain roads. The turbo shove also makes passing slow farm vehicles on rural two lane highways much safer. Just give it 3/4 throttle and you're back on the right side of the road with pass completed before you know it. Whatever you decide, hope you also put 100k miles on the thing and document your experiences for us. Cheers!😊 Edit- forgot to say I've got nearly 60k miles on my car and done pretty much everything you did except trans fluid change, fuel system flush and serpentine belt, but plan to do those soon. Other than the battery going bad at just over 2 years for no reason, (dealership replaced for free) windshield replacement (seems a little fragile, small rock caused huge crack) and the infotainment locking up a couple times (hasn't happened since last dealership software update) I haven't had major reliability issues at all. Finally got rid of the factory tires and went with Pirelli P Zeros which are much better. Tires do make a diff, very important since they're the only contact with the road.

Zero issues, the 2023s have no cylinder deactivation on the turbo models, or the problems that go along with it. Along with having the Bose sound system that sounds so great, that you mentioned in your cx-50 review. That’s interesting about the oil change interval in Europe. the actual recommended oil change interval in the Mazda manual book is 7200 miles, but then again you have a Skyactive X which I believe is diesel, correct? so maybe that’s the difference
@pascalropert61575 ай бұрын
@@eleanormassaro5195 Hello, the skyactiv-x is a gasoline engine that works almost like a diesel engine, with a lean mixture and high compression, the difference is that the compression remains just below the explosion threshold. A small injection of gasoline and a spark at the right time cause a small explosion, and a overpressure that makes the whole mixture explode. This allows to control the moment of the explosion which otherwise is much more difficult to manage than with diesel! ;) That said there is a specific oil for the skyactiv-x engine.

I have a similar color 2015 hatch that was also the loaner from the dealer. I'm at nearly 230k miles. I have never done a fuel system flush. I replaced the spark plugs twice. New ignition coils, but only because I was trying to diagnose another issue. That wasn't it. I have not had the transmission fluid replaced as I'm curious as to how long it actually will go, and as these cars crash more often than they break... transmissions are cheap. It still runs, drives and shifts like the day I brought it off the lot.* List of issues: ____ I had to have the throttle pedal replaced because it decided 4000 rpms was a good place to idle. Good safety programming limited the car to 1200rpms when touching the brake. It probably had to do with it being a hall effect sensor pedal and me working in a factory working with steel and constantly having boots covered in steel dust and shavings. Either way, I drove it to the dealership for a quick and cheap($240 is cheaper than I expected) replacement. I had to have the backup camera, wiring for the camera, and reverse switch for the camera all replaced under warranty. There were 3 symptoms for backup camera failures and what dealers should replace, and I had all 3. Had the car upgraded to Android Auto/Carplay during that time, as that wasn't a thing when I got the car. Heater core is clogged. I followed the manual for coolant flushes. There's a TSB about it. HVAC flapper thing keeps popping out of place behind the glove box. I figure I'll fix that whenever I get around to having that whole vent heater core duct unit replaced in the dash. "Chrome" is coming off the infotainment knob. *I kept having intermittent random misfire issues. Once it starts, I gotta shut the car off and restart to make it stop. It mostly happened under heavy acceleration. I saw a TSB or something somewhere that said to clean battery terminals. Long story short, new whole damn charging system (battery, alternator, terminals, cleaned connections everywhere, replaced a ground cable just because I got sick enough of the issue that I wasn't gonna miss anything) seems to have fixed it. And now I have a parts box including used OEM ignition coils as backup. She finally got her zoom-zoom back. That's all I got. Still love the car.

Definitely agree you need to change the transmission oil at some point. Just done it on a Honda CRV the MPG dropped to 39 and it sounded like it was holding too long then boom oil change back to 45 MPG this was at 60,000 miles will do it every 10,000 - 15,000 miles from now.

When you look at all the forums, everyone that is not a luxury car complains about thin paint. It's an EPA issue, they made everyone go to water based paint, which kinda stinks.

The newer Mazda 3 hatchback is a pretty sharp looking car. I wish hatchbacks were more popular in the U.S. They have most of the cargo and passenger space of an SUV but aren't top-heavy and get better gas mileage.

The L15 in the Hondas also have head gasket issues. It’s just a weak motor that usually kills itself (especially tuned). Unfortunately.

are you planning any cosmetic upgrades? Thinking about OEM aero kit, signature taillight swap, and an axleback exhaust on my 19 Preferred. I have the same Machine Gray as yours and it's been amazing at 43k+ miles and counting. With Continental DWS06+ tires it's so planted and predictable in the curves. Glad yours is holding up so well!

I'm highly considering a 2023 Mazda 3 that I've found at a dealership 2 hours away. Only has 17,000 miles on it and they have a current price of $20,700 for it. It's highly tempting from everything I've been reading up on with regards to Mazda (I currently drive a '16 Kia Forte, so seems like I would be engaging in a tremendous upgrade.)
