2007 here. 3.9 v6 Base model, basic as can be. Last year they were ever produced. Currently at 205,233 miles. Maybe I've been lucky with mine. Transmission is still in good shape for now. Had to replace both CV axles at 198k. Front rotors replaced at 200k. The AC works better than any car I've ever owned. Engine perfect. I change the oil every 5k miles. Worst part about the car is definitely the mounts and suspension. The motor and transmission mounts are completely shot at this point. They seem not too difficult to replace so I might just do it myself. This van might last another 100k. Going to drive it till the engine or transmission goes out. Its served me really well so far.

Compared to the Plymouth Voyager and Dodge Caravan my parents had from the 90s this is luxury, we had crank windows and no rear A/C, which sucks in the desert.

I have an 04 Mercury Monterey, which is the same vehicle. Wish I had found this video before I submitted mine for review recently. It's the exact same thing with a bit of lipstick lol. My parents bought it in 2006 when I was turning 11 years old. I agree big time about the visibility. That's something I really love about older minivans like this. I don't have off-street parking, and I can parallel park this van into a spot that's 2 feet longer than it, even with non-functional parking sensors. As for the 4.2, it's definitely torquey but runs out of breath on the hilly highways around Pittsburgh. but around town, I don't have a need for anything more. Very fun/funny to see you revving this one out. The big pushrod V6 seems to be not as happy past 3000 rpm as other modern engines, and with my Monterey being sort of special to me and needing an oil pump soon, I'm a little afraid to push it. I've always wondered what these sounded like at higher rpms. That being said, these vans sit happily at 80-90 mph on the highway. I could go into more detail, but no matter if you're going 65 or 85, they will average 20 mpg. Not too bad for the time. As for the sliding doors, mine came with the power doors, but they were either weak or problematic from around the time it was 6 years old, and I finally pulled the door motors out in 2021 when I bought it off my parents. The door sliders just had too much resistance and it made the limit switches feel like it was closing on a person, so they would keep coming back open when we tried to close them I appreciate the optimistic reviews that you give to most cars, and I feel like I would probably review most cars simiiarly. I like to see the virtues, and to judge things relative to their time, etc etc. I gotta say, I would not recommend one of these vans to someone. They are interesting in many ways, I do love mine, and the 4.2 is known to be a long lived engine, but these were really a symbol of Ford's lack of interest in the minivan segment. They were virtually unchanged, beyond the superficial level, since 1995. Other manufacturers were offering operable 2nd row windows and better suspension, but these kept the fixed windows and twist beam rear axle. They have always rusted out like nobody's business, which included a 3rd row seat latch recall because they were falling through the rear wheel wells. The prescribed fix was a thick piece of sheet metal attached inside the wheel wells with self tapping screws, unfortunately reducing the cargo floor width to 3'-11 3/4" on my van. So close to being okay, but with me needing to carry 4x8 panels sometimes, it's just aggravating. I love minivans and station wagons and always love to talk them up to people who think they prefer SUVs, but if anyone I knew was looking for a used minivan, I'd be much more comfortable suggesting an Odyssey.

More things! The van in the video actually had its 3rd row seat, it was just in the floor. It comes out of the floor. You can remove it, as I had done for a time previously, but it leaves a hole in the floor that you need to cover with something. I also noticed that this one does not have a center console. Mine has one, but it's super sad. I always wondered why Ford had a center mounted parking brake lever when this van was based on the Taurus, which had a perfectly fine foot pedal parking brake. The center mounted parking brake lever means that even with the console, the storage space is super sad. I have intentions to move my lever to the left of the drivers seat (a la previa) and install one of those cool triple decker 2008-16 ish? Chrysler minivan consoles that I got at the junk yard, but I have not really had time to figure it out. All I know for now is that there is the space to pull it off.

Actually, the rear 3rd row seats fold into the floor, they're not removeable. And another thing, the 2006 Toyota Siennas have windows that roll down. So you're wrong on those 2 things. I own a 2004 Ford Freestar and an 06 Sienna.

Minivans did have opening rear windows back in the 80s and early 90s. They were like those pop out windows like a Ford Festiva. Sometime in the mid 90s after Dodge introduced its 3rd gen Caravan they lost the pop out windows and all other manufacturers followed. Wasn't til the late 2000s were they brought back opening rear windows. Then everyone else followed again. Lol

My dad has one of these and the rear doors are electric as is the rear lift door. All are controllable with a buttons inside the van but also with the remote keyfob. Also, the rear seat folds into the floor so it WAS there and at 6:47 you can clearly see the outline of it as well as the handle to lift it out in the rear center. Honestly, if you are going to do a review of a car shouldn't you at least be familiar with what is available as standard equipment and on which trim level it comes on? You gave a review of THAT particular van, but you did not represent the model very well. I'm surprised you didn't announce that it doesn't come with leather seats (hint- it DOES).

As someone who used to owned a Sport trim one of these for a year. Here is a couple things to note on it (from my ownership). The transmissions on these are very hit or miss on reliability. Mine had a on/off 1st gear skip when leaving a light. The front seats are quite comfortable, but the rear two rows are way less so for any adult. Also the third row seats are not easily removable and where still in the vehicle at the time of your recording. They fold back to make a flat load floor. The siding doors, as you mentioned in the video are heavy and difficult to close. I have had many of grown adults have difficulties closing them. The engine is pretty gutless in my opinion, putting out 201hp (from factory) to move a 4200lbs vehicle. With that said I was still able to get mine up to 180kph/112mph (electronically limited) on the freeway. It didn't feel great at that speed, very floaty, but it wasn't really designed for that. The visibility was amazing in it as mentioned and finally you can find them for cheap. I sold mine for $1000 cad.

Does anyone know if the Mercury Monterey has a reliable engine and transmission? It is specially the same thing as the Ford Freestar, but the Mercury version. I am considering adding it to my list of reliability and putting it over the Buick Terraza because as much as I really like the Terraza, it does have transmission issues after long use with it. Does this van the Ford or Mercury variants, have any similar issues?
