They had to put climate controls on the steering wheel because to change them on the center console you’d have get out of your seat, walk four city blocks to adjust it there, then go back and sit down to continue driving

@@jgrc73 I agree. The gas mileage might be awful but if it saves us from hearing loss I am all for it. Ours has 102,000 miles on it and has been super reliable. We used it to tow a trailer and boat. It’s also gone on lots of long trips. Couldn’t have asked for a better family car

Me too. Dodge should've stayed in the full size, full frame, full size truck-based SUV market after the Ramcharger was discontinued. Could've been based on the 2nd geb Ram. Funny that Mexico got a 3rd gen Ramcharger based on the Ram but we didn't. They would've made a killing in the 90s and early 2000s. The Durango was cool, but a full-size Dodge SUV would've been awesome. I know for a fact my mom would've owned one. When her '86 RC was getting older in '99, she went to the Dodge dealer to check out the Durango. It was just a little too small for her so she wound up with a GMT400 '99 Yukon instead. She's a Mopar loyalist so if Dodge had a full size SUV back then she definitely would've bought one.

And I like to imagine an alternative universe where Ford always had a Chevy/GMC Suburban competitor called the Excursion dating back to the 1940s and based on the F-series platform.

@@weegeemike I could never understand how Dodge didn't see Ford and GM printing money from big SUV sales and think to do that themselves. Well there's a reason they needed to be bailed out by Chinese investors I guess. Obviously business decisions weren't the company's strong suit.

@@weegeemike If memory serves, I recall Chrysler engineers tried VERY HARD to bring an updated RamCharger to market. But they just couldn't get the fuel economy to where Chrysler wanted it to be. I don't think the feds had a hand in this one. Mexico got one because their emissions standards were a LOT looser than ours. Hence the smaller (yes, I know midsize by 90's standards) Durango. Remember, in the 90's, only Ford saw the suv market coming. Or so I've read.🧐🧐

You were ON FIRE in this review! This is one of America's best vehicles, definitely best SUV ever. I expect to see these being preserved, having the distinction of being the largest SUV ever, the cool V10, cool, imposing styling. A true sign of the times of the optimism of the Millenium era, before the world went sideways. This SUV IS America. It's unique and special and only was made in limited years, like so many classics. It stands out. Especially in a world DROWNING in smaller lookalike white/gray SUVs that are so generic. The worst crime with this truck? NO LINCOLN VARIANT! They made variants of the Escape, Explorer and Expedition, this largest most boss Ford SUV needed an even plusher Lincoln version to sit above the Aviator and Navigator as THE ultimate SUV, to dominate the world with brash, no holds barred Americanism. Lincoln Dominator has a nice ring, actually. (Btw, if it had been bright red like you said, it would look like a firetruck! In fact, I think I've seen them as part of a fire department fleet, lol, so I think subdued colors are the right choice for such a huge vehicle that draws attention with its size and power, doesn't need neon colors to get noticed lol !)

The top of that console lid isn't factory upholstery, it should be either all plastic or plastic with a faux wood insert in the middle depending on trim level, so it usually is fairly useful as a clipboard haha. However since my dad has owned his since 2001, I don't think I've ever used the console lid as an armrest since it has individual armrests on the seats themselves
@Jack_Stafford
@Jack_Stafford 7 ай бұрын
Yeah, looked after market to me too, the owner probably (and understandably) wanted a soft place for an armrest instead of a table. The BOSS move would have been to make an insert that fit under the clip that was soft on one side for an armrest, but reversible with a smooth hard surface if you needed a table/desk. Bewm! The Pontiac Aztek had cool thought out features like that... we need more unique and special cars and SUVS like these again...

I had 2000 F250 with the V10 - bought for towing our 5th wheel - 12 mpg not towing and 6 mpg towing. For me it wasn't a good tow vehicle - would slow down significantly on any size hill. Even when up in the rpm range where it supposedly made max torque it was still gutless. Only kept it for year before moving onto a 2002 Duramax that worked much better (12 mpg towing and 16-20 not towing and hills were never a problem. Maybe I got a bad one.

You probably did have a bad one. Had to use my v10 excursion when my farm truck waited for parts. Did better than the 7.3 in the farm truck with both on a nearly maxed out load on countless hill. i live in west virginia where a flat and clean road doesn't exist. the v10 kicked ass for the price and reliability compared to other gassers and even competed with diesels. early v10s have bad fuel pumps and easily clogged cats so yours could have had those issues.

It was a battle between Ford and GM for who could engineer and build the biggest SUV with the biggest engine on the market. GM came out with the Suburban 2500 with its 8.1 V8, and Ford with this Excursion and its V10. BTW, if you're going diesel with the Excursion, the 7.3 is the way to go. It doesn't have as much power as the 6.0 that replaced it, but it's significantly more reliable.

I love the excursion, always will. Only obvious issue is that it is HEAVY and doesn't get the best mileage from them. It might be good as a camping/road trip vehicle, but even with the diesel option, it is not very fuel efficient. It has room for days, is strong enough and heavy enough to haul things though. Ford kind of missed the mark on the excursion, and I believe that is why Ford discontinued them.

What??? Short of full sized pickups, you won't find a truck as big as these beasts

@@tedfreakinray See, your F350 beats Excursion by whole 2 ft so your truck is larger, and that you can buy brand new these days. Just to mention Escalade ESV are same size as Excursion too, that can be bought brand new.

I have a 2002 Excursion Limited with the V10. My center console has a hard, smooth top with a spring clip so it can be used as a clipboard to write on. I think the one in this video was like that too until someone padded it. Also, the color of the padded top doesn’t quite match the interior. I have owned mine for 21 years and I will NEVER part with it!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I think the real reason you don't see F-250/2500 based SUVs anymore (I believe they made a 2500 Suburban with a Duramax too) is because of how much the F-150/1500 platform has changed now compared to 20 years ago. An F-150 today is almost as capable as the F-250 of yesteryear. I mean think about it, a Tundra or F-150 can tow 12,000 pounds at that point if you need to tow more than that... you probably need a fifth wheel trailer so get a truck. At the point where the current Expedition and Sequoia are so capable I just don't see where a modern 2500 based SUV fits into any use case or need.

Unfortunately the expedition/navigator that replaced this doesn't have the tow rating the excursion has. Same with the suburban. Power yes. But can't handle the weight because everyone went with independent rear suspension.

This was the biggest SUV Ford had made to compete with the Chevy Suburban

GM had two different "sizes" (for lack of a better word) for the Suburban, the regular 1500 that competed with the Expedition, and the heavy duty 2500 that competed with the Excursion. That one got an 8.1 liter V8.

These are great engines, but like the 5.4, they had a tendency to shoot spark plugs through the aluminum heads. Had they used iron heads instead, this probably would never have been a problem. So if you're in the market for an Excursion, definitely go with the Power Stroke, and not the Triton.

No it was the threads on the sparkplug. Only 4 and not 10+ like most vehicles. This was fixed on the 2003 and up models. They used this engine until 2019 and in mostly motor home and commercial trucks. Their reliability has been proven. Many people well over 500k miles on them.

Spark plug torque was too low. Torque the plugs to the newest spec and they won't blow.

Maybe it’s a good thing the excursion isn’t made anymore because if it was I bet you it would have 6 less cylinders than it did back in 2003, which would make for a pretty unreliable vehicle. Even if the thing had 800hp, anything less than 8 cylinders would constantly be put under lots of stress pulling around something of this size.
