Sam shows how he put together a buffing system for under $10.
An application that is designed for woodturning but useful for any project that would benefit from buffing.

Thanks for this, Sam. I've been eyeing the Beal Buffing System for a long time, but it has been outside of my budget. Now I can do almost the same thing for a lot less.

Sam, that is a very clever set up. I have even used a paint roller in a similar set up. When I set a 3/4" x 10 tpi nut in a wood chuck, I only drill a hole that equals the distance across the flats. Then pencil around the nut and chisel out for a press fit. I use a bit of epoxy so the nut can't come lose but the wood is actually making the mechanical connection.

I made something very similar, only I chucked the headstock end in my drill chuck and drilled a shallow 1/8 inch hole in the tailstock end for the live center to ride in. I like how I wouldn't have to remove the chuck with your method though!

Sam, you must like wearing fuzz! If you take some 80 grit sandpaper mounted in a piece of wood and run the buffing wheel at 800 to 1200 rpms you can take the fuzz off the new buffing wheels. Make sure you have a shop vac ready to catch the fuzz. Run for 4-5 minutes and you will be left with a buffing wheel that is de-fuzzed and ready to polish. Best regards, Richard

Thanks, these buffing wheels are very new. I usually use an old saw turned on edge to clean the wheels or a card file cleaner.....www.acehardware.com/departments/tools/hand-tools/files/21339?store=15090&gclid=CjwKCAjwrvv3BRAJEiwAhwOdM3X4u2FcOJzb2E6NXuBeuCUOth4veXxjEJi-ECm1HzwvmZ01XnbI5BoCtgcQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds Sam

Thread size on your live center = 3/4"x 10tpi. Beall Tool sells a tap this size. I have used mine to make Captain Eddie's 'soft touch' as well as cone centers that thread onto the live center.

To prepare your wheels before using them to buff. One thing you can do is take a piece of wood or metal and fluff up the wheel kinda like you have done buffing that bowl. take a torch and go over the wheel with a flame. (make sure you have water available in case you flame it too much and it catches fire). What you want to do is burn the loose ends. this will prep your wheel for use and get rid of the flying cotton or rag lent that you get buffing.. been do this for 30 years buffing plastic and when I am to lazy to do it i'm covered in lent.

Sam, a 0.5 inch fender washer would add more support to the center of the wheel. I am going to make mine out of flannel. You thoughts, please? Great vid!

About what was your RPM to buff? What is done to dull a shine vs to add more chatoyance?
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER 8 жыл бұрын
Good question. The RPM's will vary. But I think 1000 is as fast as you need to go. But it is a nice aspect of using a variable speed lath. Sam
