In this 4th episode of Fiddly bits, my shop update series, I talk about updates to the shop, the new Atlas lathe, some new LED Deformable garage lights from Tanbaby, a new camera stand suggested by ‪@KnoxMachining‬ , and a Loctite PSA.
Tanbaby Garage light - this is the 4 panel version, I will add the 5 panel when it comes back in stock

@@theeddies You ever get snow? I hope you realize that I'll ask you that same question every winter- forever. It's supposed to be in the 60's or something here this week. To me that means get ready for a beat down of snow. The level is officially on it's way.

@@johnstrange6799 Awesome on the level, I need to order the bubble. It was the 8" correct? That's what she.... yes, you do ask me that every year about this time. Rarely get snow before January. But maybe once or twice in Jan or Feb. It only lasts a day or so usually and is pretty light. I am surprised it so warm up there, but like you say, that often means something else is coming. Sunny tomorrow but only in the 50's, so it the warmth will not last.

@@theeddies Yeah 8". Did you see Stave W's latest? He scored a 12" SB badged level, and a nice assortment of mandrels. Prices on the rest of the haul were kind of rough compared to the norm scores.

Hey! Thanks for the shout out! The microphone stands I use have adjustable boom, and the 3 legs at the bottom vs a circular base. But what you have works good too. I extend the stand up, and swing the boom over my table for a top down shot. (I use Cell phones). Works great over the lathe or mill too.

Hello Billy. Cool, I just heard you mention it in a ARW a few months ago and it gave me the idea of using what I had. With the flex head it works great! We should doasticker swap. I will send you an email. All the best!

Speaking from recent experience, getting a new machine really throws things outta whack, but in a good way 😊. I initially planned on doing the exacy same thing your doing with my gears, but when the leadscrew jammed and blew out the entire gearbox... well you know the rest 😅. Thanks for the mention and the update, Eddie! Good luck! Cheers!

Yes, you had to deal with putting the drive dogs inside the gear, luckily mine survived, at least until I start turning off the bevel and they flip off across the room. Cross that broken bridge if we get there. Yours does not have the powered cross slide correct? The other thing I found is the key inside the gear that drives it is just barely there. It did move the thing but I have no idea how, lol.

G’day Eddie. Great idea on making the shed extension and getting the other stuff out there. I wish I had a bigger shop so I could have a dedicated fabrication area for grinding and welding. You made me laugh with the drop light comment. We like to tell foreigners about “drop bears” 🐻 over here 😂. Jokes aside that light is very cool. Here’s to Christmas 🎄 Eddie. Cheers 🍻

Thanks Aaron. I know all about your "drop bears", nasty violent animals, lol. If you ever come over here I will take you Snipe hunting, that would probably be our version of a "drop bear joke. I have my welder stuffed into a little cubby hole and pull the leads outside ususally when I use it. I had not even thought about moving it, but that is a really good idea. But now I need I to get on that building that all terrain welding cart, move some electrical, etc. etc. Thanks Aaron for adding a project, lol. Happy Holidays to you and yours, Eddie

I had a crash on my lathe a while back. Found they used those spring steel roll pins on drive shafts. I made up some brass pins to act as sheer pins instead. Figured I'd rather sheer a pin than break teeth and bend shafts. Plastic change gears would also act as a safety valve. rather curse about cheap plastic gears than expensive parts.
@theeddies
@theeddies 2 жыл бұрын
The piece that I showed in this video is actually 2 pieces held together with a 1/4" pin. I initially thought that was supposed to be a shear pin but it appears to be steel. They really did count on the the lead screw bearing at the back breaking which would release the screw but either it did not work or it worked the first time, and then the guy repaired it too well and did not work the second. But like you say, I think I might try making that pin out of something softer, that combined with the plastic gears, which will not all be plastic but..., should give enough protection. There is a lot going on here between the change gears, reverse gear box, cross slide drive, and half nuts. It will be interesting. best thing I can do is just not crash, lol.

@@theeddies Ya know, I'd almost bet those gears were chowdered from somebody shifting with the lathe running.
@theeddies
@theeddies 2 жыл бұрын
@@psgflier Actually according to the Atlas bible that is exactly what the gearbox should do BUT only at low speeds and you have to shift into neutral first, pause, and then continue. So if they were trying to speed shift it through neutral or shift it at 1000 rpm that would definitely explain the carnage. The weird thing is the gears are damaged but not the shift dog which is what actually powers the lead screw and is more fragile which leads me to believe it was not driving the leadscrew when they broke but that maybe the bevels had come out of alignment slightly, bound up and crunched each other. Or the crossover gear locked up from not being oiled, there is a bit of indication that way as well. When I get to the fix video I will go through all the different scenarios, because I want some opinions and I like the forensic aspect. It could be a couple things. And despite what the book says I do not see myself using that box under power, the parts are too expensive to replace and difficult enough to make. I have been trying to think of an operation where shifting on the fly might be necessary and all I can come up with is maybe doing some production type run where speed is wanted. Wow that was long, sorry about that.

Careful with those "temporary" fixes, they can last a long time, of course if it's good enough----- That roof looks familiar, i've got a few of them. speaking of that, how'd my wifes rooster get in your video?
@theeddies
@theeddies 2 жыл бұрын
Lol. Temporary is a relative term really. Is that where that bast... came from. That rooster is not happy with me right now. One of his hens jumped our fence and Obi dispatched it with lightening efficiency. The rooster was nearly coming over the fence to join in when I got out there to call off my dog. Poor chicken went feet up in the leaves and Obi had a mouthful of feathers. The rooster now will not shut up as soon as we are in the yard. Technically, the city has an ordinance against keeping roosters but I am not that guy to call zoning. Thanks!

@@theeddies I run roofing felt(tar paper) under the metal. On long open runs I run the felt up and down instead of back and forth so it doesn't leak where it overlaps. It's going to sag anyway but there won't be any joints to leak, the main thing is to create a thermal break. A lot of times the paper will glue itself to the metal as it gets hot in the sun. I've also used spray foam. Fiberglass doesn't work very well directly on the metal because the moisture just goes through and condenses on the metal anyway. Wood stove dries the air out pretty good, don't use propane heat, it puts out a lot of moisture. The biggest problem I've had here is when we get clear cold weather, the moisture condenses as frost on the underside of the roof at night, then when the sun hits the roof the frost melts and it rains in the house. The dehumidifier stopped that.

@@psgflier Wish I would have thought of the felt before I screwed the roof down. I even have some. Maybe I will try to put up some pieces between the rafters. I am planning on leaving the dehumidifier in there and it actually is doing a great job. It rained the last 2 days and temps have been 40-72 and it is dry as... well it is dry in there and warm as well. It might even help the shop as there are a few unsealed wire and hose passages between the 2. I can control the power from the house so I can turn it off and on whenever I want without even going out there.
