Mr Pete, this is the second time you have helped me. I tried in vain to set up my lathe using the chart on the lathe, but after watching your video everything made sense. Thank you so very much for the video....

Mr Pete, I have been thoroughly enjoying your videos. My dad has had an Atlas Craftsman lathe since I was a kid and I learned the basics when I was young, but its been many years since then. I am getting ready to add it to my shop and these tutorials about this lathe are fabulous. It has also been great to see the various ways in which a lathe can be used, many of which I never knew you could do on a lathe. Thanks for being my online shop teacher.

Thanks Mr Pete, I have this same lathe and now feel more confident to cut threads. I have always wanted to try it but was intimidated by my novice experience. Thanks to you I am gradually moving out of the novice level. Can't wait until the next video !

I'm sincerely glad I watched and found this video because I just bought this lathe and I was looking through all the parts on the bench to take because I'm new to this and the the guy I bought this from doesn't really know it was his father's who passed away but there are Parts I held in my hand that I didn't think went with this machine that watching this video made me glad again that I did was because when I go pick the machine up tomorrow I know what pieces I left behind that I won't be leaving behind LOL

Your video awesome....very clear...i now understand how to change gears for threading...on my craftsman 109....prior to your video i was very unclear...its very similar to your lathe.....i did notice prior owner didnt have a washer spacer to get gears to line up...the gears were only mating 50%....so i logically added a washer and now the gears are 100% mating

Thank GOD, and some inspired person (can't believe an engineer would come up with such a great idea), for the QC gearbox. It was probably a cost saving suggestion by a machinist, who was tired of changing gears.

Nice intro. One of the nice things on my change geared lathe versus the quick change is that I can get a finer federate on it (both are Craftsman/Atlas).

Mr. Pete. I have a question that is not covered anywhere that I can find an answer. On all of those Change Gears I notice on my lathe that for example one side of the gear would show a 24 (for instance) and the other side is labelled 24A Can you enlighten me? The gears appear top be symetrical.

Probably a pattern number

Question....i would assume the gears should be greased....doesnt that make changing gears for threading a very messy task every time?

If you were to make a screw for a pocket watch, at 360tpi. what would be the gear setting?
@shootgp9 жыл бұрын
+ElCid452 360 TPI? is that a joke or type-o? lol
@ElCid4529 жыл бұрын
+shootgp No joke nor a type o'. American Machinist Handbook vol.#7, pg.190/191, Elgin/Waltham watch screws.
@shootgp9 жыл бұрын
+ElCid452 I don't have the book, but there must be a type-o. 36 TPI is a very fine screw. 360 tpi is a smooth cylinder. The Atlas lathe is not ideal for making watch components - there are specialized watch/jeweler lathes for that. If 36 TPI is what you're actually looking for, I'll dig-out my manuals and try to explain the correct gear orientation to you (which gear and wear).
@ElCid4529 жыл бұрын
shootgp Thank you. My book has the tap/dies list, but not how to cut them.
@shootgp9 жыл бұрын
+ElCid452 The gear bracket, or banjo as Mr. Pete calls it, varies between lathe versions. The only gear charts I can find are for my specific lathe, a side view looks like someone is pointing with their fingers hanging. Is this what you have, or do you have the three slots as shown in this video?

@bradley35499 жыл бұрын
You mentioned that you must have a thread dial in order to thread - not entirely true. You can just have to run the carriage forward and back without disengaging the gearbox. Takes much longer but can be done.

@msandford98989 жыл бұрын
You should really consider mentioning that the gear change is usually a very messy and greasy job. If you don't have grease under your fingernails then you must have a QC box.
