Thanks for the series Mr. Pete! Wish I would have seen the segment about putting the bushing on the other side of the gear about 6 weeks ago...drove me nut until it dawned on me. Another thing I figured out was setting the backlash for the screw bushing when threading. My Peanut doesn't have thrust bearings or even a clean way to adjust it but made a world of difference in thread quality after working them carefully to about 1-2 thou backlash. ~PJ

I almost didn't drive the 100 miles to get my 12 inch atlas with gear box and a 618 that went with it because it looked so rough, but so glad I did,,was in a cast iron stand and casters , but the big surprise was in the rusted bucket that was with it,,had a steady rest,,follower rest a milling attachment a nice original 4 jaw Chuck to go with 3 jaw and a faceplate with 6 different size dogs and many more accessories and he even mailed me 60 lbs of more he found,,and the 618 was hardly ever used and the 12 cleaned up like new with no wear anywear,,Pete I got it all for 500 dollars, even has original craftsman motor and reversing switch. I'll never find another deal like that and I almost didn't go..I have seen the prices almost double in vintage lathes in the past year as people realize vintage lathes are the best way to go now..

Thanks Tubal Cain for this series and for all your teaching, as I’m ramping up to get an atlas clausing 6” up and running and start to learn metal turning from scratch with lots of help from books, KZbin and friends. Question- these similar Atlas Clausing and Atlas Craftsman lathes call for 20 Weight non-detergent lubricating oil for the mechanisms. But 20 Weight is rare/hard to find/more expensive than non detergent 30 Weight lube oil. How important for the working and longevity of the machine is the 20W as opposed to 30W?
@mrpete2225 жыл бұрын
I doubt if it makes one little bit a difference. Use the 30 wait

Thanks for another very informative video. Now I have an understanding of just how the formula vs the gear ratio really works. After reading all that information, I would just say huh ? oh well I guess so, and on with the threading. Thankfully, I now have the quick change gear box. Looking forward to your next great video....Thanks ..Ken

Your the teacher,,,so question on threading,,,have a few Atlas (Craftsman) lathes, 101 and the older one's. Some are with change gears like the video,,all are 12", Some have quick change gear box,,,what gears are supposed to be on the machine with quick change gear box, the one below the compound gear, then I should be able to pick up any TPI on the selector box And is their a book on it.. Think someone stripped the gear below and replaced it with a 60 TPI which makes treading off on everything,,cut a 24 TPI , and it ended up as about 40tpi...and the bottom gear that engages the gearbox, is single and also solid gear that is 42 tip. OOps... Thanks if you read this,,enjoy all your video's very much.

That is not an easy question. Here is what you need to do. Go to the website vintage machinery.com. Then find the Publications area and search craftsman tools. There are hundreds of reprints. Find the ones applicable to your Lathe and print it out. I think there is one strictly on gears.

I can imagine the math and figuring it took them to make all these treading combinations work,,just a shame they dropped the ball on the .oo42 slowest feed rate,,my only complaint about the atlas quick change, and with my 2 12 inch atlas lathes with quick change gear boxes I did get the original change gears but not the mounts for them.

Thank you for the interesting video series. I have a quick change gear box, but it's still interesting to see how it's done without one. If you ever need an idea for a related video, explaining how to work with the thread dial would be helpful. Determining which lines or numbers are acceptable for which thread pitches is a black art for me at the moment. Not even sure if it doesn't change from one machine to the next, though I suspect it doesn't. Thanks! -- Mike

+BigMjolnir Thanks--I cover that in a future video
@BigMjolnir9 жыл бұрын
Thank you, I'll look forward to it! I noticed on your recent threading video that the Atlas lead screw makes 4 turns for each of the 4 lines on the thread dial. That plus the ratio from the gears has to be where the answer lies, since the goal is to tell when the spindle is back in the same position as when you started the thread. Hmmmm..... -- Mike

When setting gear backlash I use a piece of .002" brass shim stock cut to the width of the gear and long enough to provide a handle. Just wind it into the gears about 4 teeth the first time it's used to set the shape. Two of these are good for a lifetime of threading. I really like my Seneca Falls lathe as no tools are needed to change or adjust the gears. I replaced the two nuts used on the banjo (quadrant) idler shafts with nuts that have handles like one sided wing nuts. The other shafts have slip washers. Thanks for another great video. G'day Lyle, Found your videos very enlightening. I have an "Advance" lathe, you most likely know them. I don't. Not yet any way? Through your videos I set my little lathe up to do a 27 TPI thread. Took me a while as I don't still know the stud order. The only one I am sure of is the lead gear. I guessed the rest. I will keep watching till I come across a explinatation, Thanks Heaps

Your videos are VERY instructive. I thank you. One question; Where did you get your "book"? I have seen one place to buy a manual, however, it is in the UK. The machines they are showing do not correlate to my machine I inherited from my brother. It is well used and I would love to change out the worn parts. Could you give a place in America where I can get the parts and manual?

Do you have any idea why the 20TPI is specified to pick from the 32 tooth tumbler gear and reduce 2:1 to the 40 tooth on the screw, rather than pick from the 16 tooth gear and use an idler? I set it up on my lathe using the second method, though the I think the idler is the 72 tooth to make an easy fit-- whatever the largest in the standard set is. I find this more convenient as the direction pick is the same when doing several threads on the same part, so I am less likely to select the wrong direction. (yes, I'd love the QC box. No, I don't want to pay what they seem to go for. If it was a SB heavy or a Leblonde....)

When I was rebuilding my Atlas lathe I found it interesting that the 11/16" nut that Atlas spec'd for the change gears is larger in size than the 3/8"x16 nut normally found on the size of bolt from a hardware store. It's should also be noted that the current Sears replacement bolt 9-69A is nothing more than a standard carriage bolt you can buy for $4.59. Ended up making my own nuts from 11/16" hex stock to be correct to the original part, and turning the heads of standard carriage bolts to cosmetically match the originals.

Hi Pete hope you have been keeping well. I've had to change my phone recently and been honestly missing watching your channel. But now have a new phone. So looking forward catching up on anything I have missed.. There is a question I like to ask you My 1939 Colchester master 6 inch lathe has a maximum top speed 550 rpm. Is this going to cause me problems with turning some hard steels. As im a bit worried it may lack the speed. Compared to the newer models from 50s onwards. I really hope not as in putting so much work in restoring her.
@mrpete2227 жыл бұрын
Mark. 550 is a rather slow speed. In general, carbide requires more speed than that. I would suggest experimenting with different steels & different lathe tools. I am sure it will be adequate
@markgrevatt48677 жыл бұрын
mrpete222 I thought that to Pete with regards to the speed. I may just restore it and if it isn't adequate for my.purpose i may just sell it.
