i love your channel Max, one of my favorite avenues of entertainment. I thought I might be able to help a little on the cast iron vs steel mystery. There are two different quick checks that can be used. the ring test and the spark test. The ring test procedure is where you try to isolate the part from any vibration deadening source and then rap it with something hardened like an open-end wrench or a small ball peen hammer. A piece of steel will ring like a bell. A piece of cast iron will just go clank. And the spark test is where you take a grinder to a unimportant area of the part and hit it. Cast iron will shoot a spark about an inch and a half. Steel will shoot a spark maybe as much as a foot. Hope this helps. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you, Max, for yet another great in-depth video. Im looking forward to watching part two. While on the subject of great videos. I want to thank you for taking the time to record what you do for a living. A bona-fide business that pays the bills and puts beer and food in your belly. What some people may not realise is just how much work goes into making these videos. Getting the right light, the right viewpoint, even the project itself. There are only so many times you can show how to set up or face off, and yet in 90% of all projects, that is exactly what is required. Then, of course, there is the editing. All those hours sat on your arse sifting through hours upon hours of recordings, trying to put together a satisfying video for us, your fans, and all outside of your normal working day. Thank you, Max, for entertaining us all year. I wish you and her indoors a prosperous and healthy New Year. I'll see you again soon, in part two, cobber. 👍😉🍻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Great vid as always. Great turning shots as well. I hate turning cast iron. Makes such a mess. I've taken to laying out some aluminum foil under the chuck and up to the carriage to make cleanup easier and keep it out from under the carriage. If the chuck or something catches the foil, it just tears vs. turning into a whipping nightmare like a rag will.

Great design Max 👌. Nicely done on manufacture. Ref splashback, as soon as i saw it, it was definitely wot??, very cramped, needs top return cutting off, and reducing to 30/40 mm, plus maybe quick removal for swarf removal, I think all the production lathes had rear sliding, or pull out backs/trays for the labourer or shop hand to dragout and fork/shovel in the machine shop during my apprenticeship. Material is definitely cast iron, SG type, postive rake cutting by the twist drill, was very much different that negative rake cutting, I wonder if a positive rake turning insert woulg generate long swarf? Hi Max, noticed a double clunck on lathe startup, assume she has a Star, Delta motor starter. Maybe increasing the timer duration will alleviate the secondary clunck when it switches to Delta. From memory you have plenty of power capacity from the mains, deleting the Star, Delta altogether and going direct online might give her more mechanical sympathy without the secondary clunck through the headstock. You would have to pay a pretty penny for that lump of cast iron.

The DSG bed sure makes a good table. I modified the splash guard on my DSG to make it suit my needs better, but I only have the short section behind the chuck in use, about 18" or so, there's a lot more clearance than on you JFMT as the headstock on the DSG is so deep. For an adjust true pipe centre, couldn't you just take one apart press fit a stub shaft into it and chuck that up in the adjustable 3 jaw revolving chuck you are currently making, it would be less rigid than something bespoke but a lot less time to make to see if it would do.
@swanvalleymachineshop
@swanvalleymachineshop 17 күн бұрын
I need to pipe centre to have as minimal overhang as can be achieved , hence a custom build . Yes , the splash guard has got knobs on it ! Too close & too long ! Cheers 👍

My first reaction to seeing your back splash is modify the area arouind the chuck by chopping the back and adding some height but using the back half as a shelf to hold some tooling? Just my 2 cents.

Also two sharp corners in the same plane with only 11mm cast iron between them. Aren't you afraid its gonna crack at that point and the chuck comes flying of?
