I've finally decided to take the plunge and build a stringed instrument. I found this video, again, after many years. I would have given this video a thumbs up but I already had :-). I need a circle butting jig and this one will fit the bill! I was subscribed many years ago, at least 9 years ago, when you were still actively putting out videos. I really enjoyed your content. I unsubbed figuring you were done with KZbin. I know people move on and do other things but I wanted to let you know I did enjoy and appreciate your videos. I hope you are well. Blessings!

Glad this was still helpful! I keep meaning to make more videos, but time just doesn't allow much these days. Life is quite busy. Thank you for the comment!

Hello Jason, I just watched your video about the circle-cutter and the purfling cutter. Very impressive work. I do have one small suggestion for the purfling cutter tool. Instead of using a single blade, you could actually modify your tool so that it has 2 parallel blades side by side. This way when you scribe and make your purfling cuts, you don't need to adjust the width of the blade for a second cut. Your only consideration will be the edge distance to where the purfling will be inlaid. I am a woodworker and woodcarver, and I also happen to be a blacksmith/knifemaker. Recently I began violin restoration and repairs and am still learning this delicate and complex craft. I am amazed something so delicate and small requires such precision. As a consequence, this is only a hobby. Anyway, I hope you find my comments useful. Now that I saw how you made your circle cutter and purfling tool, I can tackle and make a purfling cutter tool of my own. Be well, and my you enjoy a prosperous year ahead. Regards, James Williams, Anchorage Alaska

Nice little tools. Did you allready figure out that the purfling cutter will not be usable in the convex waist area of the guitar unless you give the fence a radius? Cheers.

The purfling cutter does have a radius on the fence, you just can't see it in the video. That would have been good for me to point out too! Thanks for the comment.

how to make that cuter?

That's a good suggestion for a video. I've been covered up with life lately and had little time to make new videos unfortunately. This was basically cut out with hand tools using a chisel to shape the interior bevels of the wedges.

Rod Parker actually they both worked exceptionally well. My rosette was very clean, as was my binding. I’ll be using the purfling cutter again soon on a telecaster build. Now they are slower than a router, but I prefer the hand tool way whenever possible. Hey don’t knock it till you try it!
