Regarding space consumption of a drum sander, I have my 20" planer, my 25" dual-drum drum sander and my 2 'x 4' CNC all lined up along 14' of wall space, which in turn is more or less centred on a 35' wall (the rest of the wall is taken up with cabinetry, a doorway, and a desk.) The CNC is fixed in place, but the planer and drum sander are mobile, stored against the wall, then pulled out when needed. In this way, they share infeed and outfeed space. I have no problem planing or sanding material up to 12' long, although I seldom make use of that for the drum sander. It takes me no more than a few seconds to pull either tool away from the wall whenever they're needed for long stock. As for the utility of the drum sander, I might hesitate to purchase one new now, particularly with the prices soaring in the last few years, but I'm in a situation similar to Logan, having invested far less than new price, and I wouldn't consider getting rid of it. Even though it can be finicky to replace sanding belts, I still value it for: 1. sneaking up on a critical thickness 2. sanding panels 3. sanding thin stock or veneer that might get chewed up in the planer. 4. flushing up inlays. Just my $0.02 Thanks for the podcast.

The wood studio at which I was a member had a drum sander and it was a fantastic part of my workflow. Can I afford the money and floor space in my garage shop? Probably not, other tools, e.g. bandsaw upgrade, higher priority. But once you form a dependancy...

I have a Jet 1836 drum sander and use it almost as much if not more than most other tools in the shop. Yeah, the sandpaper maybe a bit expensive but I don’t push it hard and I take multiple lighter passes and I get a pretty decent ‘finished’ surface without seeming to burn through paper. Certainly an argument can be made against the amount of time spent … so maybe not the perfect answer for everyone?
