I got a spot just outside LA - especially if you want to see the charro stuff. However, up street from my barn has an English spot. It's great to see another cultures perspective on the tack here. I'm new to horse ownership and it's a million and one ways to do something based on someone's perspective. Moved from a backyard barn to a predominantly English barn. I can't say what's better for you and your horse tho - still figuring it out.

@Belinda Barham I definitely agree on the spurs, I think they're pretty pointless, but you can use a bit and point out bad ones haha The twisted bits are horrific, and definitely can't be compared to a basic snaffle. And double bridles aren't bad if you know how to use them because you're primarily using basically a snaffle bridle but with a little added leverage if required. Like everything though it depends on how it's used, and current high level dressage does tend to fall more on the hyperflexing side... which is definitely bad.

I'm from a warm European country and I'm the only one that doesn’t wear suede, except on really cold days. I have to order my breeches/tights from the UK because the stores here only sell suede. I'll never understand how someone can wear suede above 10°C.

Glad you commented on those bits and chain twitch, I have always felt they should not be used on horses very harsh especially in the wrong hands and unfortunately there are a lot of wrong hands. I'm super thankful that we still have suede/equisuede options for breeches because silicone is horrendous on leather. As I don't generally have the money to go around replacing the seat on my saddles on a regular basis, I'd rather keep them nice as long as possible.

Too funny! The fashion you're seeing is not "American", but you are on Florida! They have their own fashion down there. It's rarely cold there, so very summery style is normal there. Where I live, we just had another 4 inches of snow yesterday to add to the 18" still on the ground after a thawing of 2 feet, last week. And, while I'm outside in short-sleeves shoveling the snow because it's warmed up alot, my Mother in Florida wears a jacket if it gets below 30C! And, I can't remember the last time I saw anyone up here wearing flowers. Try shopping in different areas of the country. There's a reason why we have 50 States. By calling everything "typical American" is like saying Italian food is typical European. Even regionally in Italy (as you know) isn't even typical Italian. What we eat in Rome is far different than Milano. Same in America. Fashion in Florida is different than in New England, Montana, California, and Michigan, for example. Even tack is different...lol. Oh, and Wellington/Palm Beach is just plain expensive for everything. Try going up to Ocala.. its a little better. Happy shopping.

Agreed -- as a southerner, I would say flowers are a southern thing, and especially a Florida thing. Honestly, Florida is kind of like a separate country. Re the brown vs. black tack -- isn't that because Americans are still emulating everything we perceive as 'English' with regard to English-style tack? And the British have traditionally used brown, haven't they?

Oh you have so much to learn about us Americans and our stuff, LOL. Looks like you had fun and just walking through a tack shop touching things is a blast. As for the brown tack it is popular because you can use it on so many colors of horses and it will not bleed or stain like black can do. Hunter rings do not get bling and most of everything is conservative (earthtone) colors. Suede on the knees doesnt mar the saddle like the silicone can. Those prices were crazy but that was because it was Wellington and you never buy at the show unless you forgot something. I think you probably found Dover Saddlery to be a much different experience. BTW a lunge whip is forever, when you find one you like with the right pop you never leave home without it.😁

I know I’m late to the video but an FYI for that flysect fly spray! One of the owners at my barn had that for their horse and he developed a horrible reaction from it, he had hives, his skin was flaking off on his entire body and was clearly painful to him. I threw it away and gave him a medicated bath and in a few days he was all better !

Best flyspray is Pyranha Wipe N Spray (yellow bottle) and Endure (black bottle) as they both are oil based and stay on when it rains!

That stick with the chain is called a twitch. People usually use rope or baler twine, it goes around the upper lip of the horse to keep it from moving. People would generally use it for horses that hate standing for the vet/farrier.

I want whips that don't match what everyone has at the barn.. and in the US your local tack shop typically only has two colors or two types and literally everyone around buys that same one. So I am currently on the look out for a new dressage whip that doesnt match the ones at the barn 😂 so some people think its silly to spend money on those but I like to know its my whip. Dressage does black a lot for everything. I def don't wear the suede leggings! I love the silicon. I LIVE in those tops with the mesh underarm and armpits why are AMAZING in the summer. Also there is a huge difference between in styles and clothing for English vs western in the US. I am on the east coast and the tack shops are either all English, or a healthy mix of both. But more people ride English who spend money on riding cloths, western people dont care they just ride in jeans and a t-shirt.

@Belinda Barham you took that super personally and defensive... I thought it was a compliment, like it's not a big deal ride in whatever you want, english kinda go extra on it. Money wise I would expect there to be rich people in either style of riding. I would never take one group of people assume "rich" vs "poor" vs spend a lot vs spend a little, but I got to MANY riding schools fro both western and English and the western kids are dressed way more chill and don't need fancy tops. Now when they ride in a competition, uh yeah those comp tops are expensive, the saddles the horse, everything. I just means to go ride, it's way more relaxed.. which I like btw. You took that totally 100% the wrong way as me saying western people are poor.. which I find really weird. You put your own bias and assumptions into what I said. I ride both and I like both. They each have their own cultures and you're going to find rich and poor people in both. I would agree it can be a waste to spend that money on a bunch of riding clothing when it could be put in a new saddle.

As a Brit visiting the US about 20 years ago, I was shocked by how stiff and heavy the lead ropes were in the tack store. I was used to ones that you could easily hold between thumb and forefinger. That said, I think the UK has since moved towards thicker, heavier ropes.

Suede is non-existent in Australia too, except in the Show Horse rings were everything is a lot more traditional. But we do have a lot of Western sport here & I've seen the really gaudy shirts & blinged-out belts, high-top hats & even jeans! I find them obnoxious, but each to their own haha! That twitch with the chain looks absolutely barbaric, I hate to think anyone would actually use that... 😢

It’s called a twitch - the thing that twists a horses upper lip. We only ever used it for one horse (he could be an absolute bugger) when being drenched.

Some explanations: -FL is a retirement state. The flowery shirts cater to that segment of the population. -Unfortunately, we have fewer equestrian protections here than Europe. The twitch and bits shown are terrible, but allowed. -American brands are often less desirable due to being cheaply made. This is not universal, but I buy more European brands than American.

PLEASE test those fly sprays on your horses first. Many of the strong oil based ones can cause chemical burns. The employee wasn't lying about that. They also do tend to stay slick and are harder to wash off, so have a feeling you may actually hate that.

So sad to see how harsh looking a large number of the bits are in American horse culture. Can you imagine if those chains catch the inside of your poor horses mouth 😢 Lovely to see Matt advising against them. The cowboy/western riding style is obviously very different to the European riding styles but the much harsher tack in general really shocked me-I’m not a huge fan of spurs but understand their part in some types of competition riding but the gaucho style still in use within Western riding makes me feel so upset that horses are being subjected to these devices. A lot of the more harsh bridles, bits, spurs etc speak to me that there are corners being cut in all the basics of horsemanship. Unfortunately it tends to show in some horses behaviour. This is why I love watching both Matt and Jesse’s content-all their horses are treated with kindness and respect and it shows in the wonderfully sweet personalities they each have 😊

I would like to point out for clarification that this is not a western tack store. Just like every other equestrian sphere, the western sphere certainly is not exempt when it comes to poor horsemanship. But that is a reflection of the individuals themselves, not the discipline.

I was more thinking of the riders who use unnecessarily harsh tack rather than put in the work to their relationship with their horse. You might want to read the ingredients in the fly spray before you buy it - some of those very strong fly sprays contain some strong toxic chemicals - not saying what you bought has these chemicals but they might!
