If Dawn dish soap can clean the oil off of baby ducks, rust, grease, etc, it can probably clean the yellow out of a horse tail. Great comment!

You just have to condition it really good afterwards cause it can dry the tail out.

I use glycerin saddle soap. Got this idea from a really old farrier and boy does it whiten. It also coats the hair strands so some may not like this .

That was my first thought when he said whiten, to go to the purple shampoos. I mean, groomers use it on dog fur, i doubt it could hurt a horse's tail hair.

OMG I use to show sheep and we would always wash them with Dawn dish soap as well. It was the only thing that took the grease out of them so we could shear them clean. And my dad would always say "if it can cut grease from an oil spill it'll work on your show sheep".

I owned a grey for years and the bottom of his tail was basically all white. The best thing to use is a pure vinegar soak for ten minutes to break up the natural stains, and then wash that out really well with a blueing shampoo to counteract the yellow that's left ☺

My riding coach's pony has a pure white tail and she makes a paste out of chalk and water and puts it on to the tail and then brushes it off when it's dry, the dirt sticks to the chalk and comes right off. She gets a lot of compliments because of how clean it is.

Interesting idea. Chalk is very alkaline though, it might be a good idea to counteract that with a vinegar rinse afterwards. 😉

As a grey haired granny here’s my suggestion from one who knows yellowy hair: laundry bluing added to the final rinse. Removes yellow nicely. Ketchup might work because of the natural acidity. I’ve used tomato sauce on a blonde dog who had a run in with a skunk and it left him with a nice shiny coat.

Omg, try Dawn Power Wash!! My sister just called me so excited. She has a horse with a white, previously yellow, tail. The mare had some health issues that caused her to have very loose manure, hence the discoloration. Anyway, we had been discussing how awesome Dawn power wash is in the kitchen. The next day she was shampooing the mares tail, again & just couldn’t get it white. She had the thought that maybe the power wash would help. She applied it, let it set for a few minutes, then rinsed it & omg, her tail was white!! I can’t wait to try it on my 2 pintos….

I was about to say while you were washing Emporio's tail, "it's a good thing Jessa is not there, or he'd have a lot to say about what you are doing." Then Jesse shows up at the end. 😆 🤣 😂 My mother used to use this stuff called "blueing" when I was a kid many many moons ago. She used it on white cloths in the wash to whiten them. I don't know if you can still get it, but if you can, you might try that, Matt. It looks like Emporio is doing much better and is so patient about having his tail messed with.

We used laundry rinse for ultra bright white on our white show horses. In Australia, "Bluo" + "Bag Blue". Both were deep blue but u only use a small amount in your final rinse. My Great Nan used it on sheets, table cloths, white clothing. Some women use it on their hair. Cheap way to get white, shiny hair 🤗🌻

The baking soda needs the vinegar to really work. If you make a paste with the baking soda, apply to tail and then spray a good amount of vinegar, it will bubble and "lift" the dirt. Try it at home: in your kitchen sink, mix baking soda with a little water, it will make a thick paste, then pour vinegar on it. It will bubble. That's what you need on the tail. Don't apply to the bone, top of tail. The ketchup works if you follow it with a good wash, with dish soap. If that fails to remove stains, try Orvus Soap. That stuff is magical.

I feel your pain, we have a grey too... Prevention is better than cure, once you get the white with what ever product you use, then add a generous handful of coconut oil or baby oil to the tail and massage it in, this helps to give the tail a coating to help stop it soaking up the staining from sand, urine, other bedding related stains plus it stops mud from sticking to it if you turn out and the grounds wet, makes it alot easier to brush and leaves the tail shiny, and silky

All of the products you have will work if used correctly. The secret to getting them to work well, is to leave them on for a reasonable amount of time. The baking soda mixed with the dish soap and you need to put it in and leave it for a while, like half an hour. Then you can add some acid like the ketchup or vinegar, or lemon juice to the coated hair and massage in. Wait 5 minutes or so, then rinse out well. If it lightened enough, condition heavily and let dry.

Showing Palominos for years we used ORVUS paste which was common with the show cattle people and that got out any stain and left tails bright white. I do think Emporio's tail looks much paler. Staining can be hard to get out. You might need to make that paste again and really work it in the hair follicles and wait for a while. White vinegar does work well but if you can't get it maybe try lemon juice ? It worked for me and yes you will need to do a really good moisturizer treatment. Emporio does have a thick tail so maybe work in sections ?

I think for the ketchup hack you need to rinse out or quickly wash the tail first to get some of the dirt out because ketchup isnt shampoo so it doesnt "wash". Red cancelss out green tho, so the red stain in tomato's cancels out the green/ yellow isch color. Thats why people say if blonde hair stains from like chlorine in pools ketchup can work. I think a good purple shampoo works better on horses tails tho since they are not blonde

I'm impressed with how white my cats' paws are. My first cat wasn't that way; his white areas became yellower as he got older. It could be that his cat food had artificial food colors that stained his fur. Now I have multiple cats with snowy white paws, and I believe there are no artificial food colors in their food. So have you considered why your horse's tail is yellow? Though I thought that just naturally happened with this type of coloration. Hydrogen peroxide is a traditional bleach for human hair ("peroxide blonde"), but I wouldn't risk it if you want a white tail. Instead of vinegar, you can use lemon juice. I don't know about ketchup, but tomato juice is a traditional remedy for skunk spray. I would think that tomato juice would stain. Vinegar, lemon juice, and tomato juice are all acidic. A paste of straight baking soda + water helps remove brown stains from cookware. I once read that at dog shows, the groomers used talcum powder to whiten the dogs' coats. Even back then (1970s), they warned against letting your dog breathe the powder, because it's bad for the lungs. Recently, people have finally figured out that the same is true for baby powder. Well, duh! The tail not bending with soap + baking soda had me laughing out loud!

You can try 2 more things made for human hair. One is blue shampoo, it technically cancels out orange, but it might work on the end of the tail. Second is a silver hair rinse (not one made for gray hair, but one that actually has gray/silver pigments in it). You have to dilute it with water and dip the tail in it for a while. You do not rinse it. This should handle the yellowish end that you ended up with in this video. I live in Poland and they are very cheap here (like 1-2 USD per bottle), I could send you one if you can't get it in Netherlands.

You should try shampoo for gray hair. You can get it at a salon.

As a kid my mom used to wash my hair with ketchup after swim practice. Blonde hair turns green from chlorine and ketchup did wonders in that regard

Ketchup is red and neutralize green. Here the tail is yellow so what he needs is purple, the complementary color

I think Emporio has yellow in his mane and tail. It seems natural. Anyways, great video!
