I was a husky child and all the more 'popular' girls in my elementary wore Gymboree leggings... so my mom took me to the mall so I could fit in. Walked into Gymboree and got about 1 foot in the door before the clerk loudly and abrasively went off on me, an 8 year old, that nothing in the store would possibly fit me, I'm too big, the clothes here are for petite girls...blah blah. I'm 30 now, still seethe at that interaction, especially after it was a catalyst for my future ED, which put me in the hospital for 18 months after 2 cardiac arrests.. Leave people alone, don't offer unsolicited advice. If something doesn't fit a patron, they'll come back to return it.

The worst times are at shops like this. I went into a sports shop to buy thicker leggings and the cashier told me that it’s good I’ve started exercising and setting goals if I want to fit into something like that. And I looked her dead in the eyes and said “I’m an athlete, the leggings aren’t some goal I want to fit into, they’re for my sport you judgemental prick” and never went back.

I've actually had this at the D&G store in London. I'd just she'd 4 and a half stone and having never thought I be that size in my life decided to treat myself to something I'd always wanted from there. Went in and before I'd even opened my mouth the very helpful ironing board of a lady decided to inform me she thought I'd be better elsewhere as nothing would fit and everything was probably more expensive than I could ever afford. I was actually wearing the said item too and was Gona ask her for a smaller size lol. But telling ya no matter how much u lost or how good u felt. It's all trashed in one easy sentence. It's all well and good saying dont listen but wow it's hard. U get shamed when your bigger and shamed when u loose the weight. It's so easy for someone who's always been thin and never had a weight issue to tell someone to loose weight and laff at them. Shame

@@Littlekitten_ All brands should cater to a wide variety of sizes, and the still prevalent issue of clothes being less accessible for bigger women is still there. Not to mention the history of racism this company has. This is why I avoid the storefronts and stick to the online store. Not that I’ve ever faced or been scared to face any discrimination or hatred, but I can’t bring myself to go in anyways. Also, a quick tip for Brandy online: always check if the item of clothing is made in China or Italy, it makes a huge difference on the quality. I’m a smaller person and I hate it when something clearly looks too big for me so Brandy was kind of the perfect solution when it came to some of their basics. I really wish they would just make more sizes because people would buy them! They’re shooting themselves in the foot with this whole toxic gaslight gatekeep girlboss vibe and it’s really sad when they could just be chill and make more sizes ☹️

Recently been getting into your work Mel, & just want to say that the fact that you’re just speaking & sharing your experiences is powerful- & I’m sure you already know this. Being able to talk & compare notes, esp the extensive ones you take, is more valuable than gold. B/c it is wisdom. & wisdom, esp from woman to woman, so graciously given so other ppl don’t have to learn the lesson the hard way is a GIFT. Too many ppl look this gift horse in the mouth, & the fact that anyone can have a mic/phone & broadcast their message whether it’s helpful or not contributes to ppl taking it for granted. But your wisdom, word, & work is valued & appreciated here. I’ve also historically had a bad habit of giving unsolicited advice 😶‍🌫️I’ve def gotten better over the years but this helps me take inventory so I don’t accidentally or not commit violence on others, & when to check other ppl too. Thanks!
