In NJ they have had these since I was a little kid. It was a way for stores to encourage people to return the cart properly, also it would encourage homeless people in the parking lots to return stranded carts for the quarters (as opposed to walking off with them as frequently happens in some stores without them). It’s a win win, I am shocked this is such a new thing to so many people.....

in Norway they take 1.23-2.25 USD. because the slowest value coin is usually thrown away, the next lowest is physically too big and not very common to carry, while the two highest value are very common, so even our shopping carts are more expensive in Norway.

This is stupid and more of a hassle for customers. I got people stealing my cart cos I left it unattended for a few seconds in and out of the store. Plus you got beggars out in the front asking for quarters, and new customers looking at you returning a cart and hoping you are a good Samaritan and give them your cart. Couldn't they just put in a lock mechanism like war-mart where if you pass a certain point, the wheels lock and become unable to push?

The ShopRite that I work at use to have these locks. The customer would always complain about not having a quarter. Eventually people would ruin the locks by placing the key into itself so they can get their quarter.

You will need at least 100 shopping carts with quarters inside to make 25$. Sometimes, carts dont have money in them because sometimes staff at the store can unlock it for you without coin. If you request that you don't have the exact coin, it needs

99Cent corporate claims that their carts are costing them big $$$$$ in fines from the county for their carts being left everywhere, so they claim to save that money customers saves money... When asked about the locking wheels on the carts like everyone else, as this quarter deposit will not stop the carts still being left in the same places as before,,, no comment....

Here in Canada, im 34 and I remember these since I was a kid. Now they've installed the magnets that lock the whole cart once you leave the property. Then the cart wheels lock and you're shit out of luck. Lol cant get your quarter or dollar back now!! Haha

I wheeled the cart home and cut the lock off with an oxy torch. Few minutes with an angle grinder and I had my quarter back. I eventually made the cart into a nice welding trolley.

These have been where I live since the mid 90s... Now, we have carts some places with GPS boundaries that lock up when people (IE homeless people) try to walk out of the lot with them... And, can also track where they are if somehow they do get taken and require the city to be called to reaquire.

It's actually a magnetic sensor rather than a gps. They just have a wire underground to set up the perimeter. When the cart goes over that field, a motor jams the wheel

I can spot a problem bigger than theft. A little old lady who only can rely on public transportation, how is she supposed to get her groceries home? What if there were public rental carts, ones that can be safely taken on the bus, or safely docked on a taxi? But I want to point out that there should be the ability to rent shopping carts that way people are less inclined to steal shopping carts from the store.

Obviously it is only there so that people would return the cart to the right place, not to somehow stop people from stealing them! This is exactly the same why bottles and cans have a deposit here.. so that people would return (aka recycle) them and not just throw them in the trash.
