I found your story about trying to knit hitting home. My mom was left handed and tried to teach me to crochet. Once I decided to try again as an adult, I found I remembered all she told me. She did enjoy watching me crochet once she couldn’t do it anymore. She has passed away now and that time we spend together means so so much to me.

My award-winning grandma taught me to knit about 40 years ago. I took a week off work and spent every day with her. When she died, my uncle made sure she had some knitting in her casket. I'm left-handed, but I guess she taught me the right-handed way. I do lots of things with my right hand because it was discouraged back then to go against the norm. Oh, you've got me thinking of my grandmother's baked fruit pies. Before she married she was a housekeeper for some wealthy folks and the stories she'd tell. Oh my.

I just shipped a few fig tree cuttings off to you! Most people do not realize we can grow fig trees in our areas! Granted, we grow them in pots and store them in garages or barns in the winter, but the fruit are so worth it! The normal varieties found commercially are somewhat bland. I sent you two varieties, a rare berry fig called Black Madeira and an early producing honey fig called Improved Celeste.

I think the far side yard that is long, straight out from your kitchen door would be a great mini farm. You could put your orchard, a pumpkin patch. I loved our pumpkin patch when I was a kid. Big sunflowers, to eat seeds for you and save for the birds to have in winter, a big strawberry patch (love jam), blueberry and raspberry bushes. I could see Benjamin having a great time in that area.

Aaahhhhhh, I can so relate to those memories, which will never fade, I hope. My mom was the provider while we visited gma for the summer. She would send us out for blackberrys so that she could bake our favorite BlackBerry doober. The doober part us what she called it!🤣🤣. We didn't care what she called it, it was soooooo, soooooo, delicious. She did the same for the pears and pecans we brought home. It was the best part of my life, as a child, beside getting a puppy.😏 Ohhh, I forgot the figs. 😋😋😋

KBB Chickens fight, especially when they are new to each other, to establish dominance and a pecking order. After the order is established then they mostly settle down to just doing dominance displays or moves, usually nothing serious, regularly to maintain their place in the pecking order as it can change over time. Occasionally I have to play the rooster for my flock and interfere if any of them start going a bit too far.

Interesting as we raised all kinds of birds when I was s kid - Silkies being one of them. They were so docile & followed you around like puppy dogs. In fact I had a black one named Licorice that was my pet & that thing would come & cuddle up next to me if I sat down. Would even let me hold it & rock it like a baby (on it's back!). The white & buff ones in the flock were all very tame as well. We must had been lucky as we had several diff kinds of Chickens & Bananas & dont remember any of them fighting w/ each other. Now some of the pheasants could kind of be jerks!😄

Several years ago I planted 3 small serviceberry in my yard and all they did was attract japanese beetles. They were only pretty while blooming and as soon as the flowers were done so ugly with the beetles eating the leaves. Removed them after 1 year. Now have a yellow ribbon arborvitae and peonies in that area, that looks so much prettier. Love the trees Laura picked out, fresh peaches, plums and apricots are some of my favorites and you can't get any fresher than picking your own. YUM!

I love red maple trees but because we live on a farm with horses and cattle we have to very careful where we plant them. The ingestion of dried or wilted maple leaves in the fall can cause toxic poisoning in horses. Make sure you ask your neighbors who have livestock before you plant one that may drop leaves on or near a shared fence line.

How exciting--I'd love to plant fruit trees. Can you talk about the soil for them? I have heavy clay alkaline soil, so not sure what I can plant here. Thank you!

You should check with your local extension office to get help with what grows good in your area soil testing and how to amend your soil. They are a great local resource that’s a wealth of information also local master gardeners can help you too.

What about turning the lawn area you don't do much with beside your barn, into an orchard? Would be so pretty as well as useful 🍑🌳🍐🌳🍊

Can you do a video on how they graft trees? That multi-apple tree is really neat. I'd love to know more about the process.

Hi Laura! I'd love to incorporate more edible landscape into my space but I'm always nervous about caring for food improperly. Could you provide insight into how to safely care for food? Is it ok to plant a fruit tree in an area that was once treated with lawn products? Thanks! Hugs to Benjamin:)

I know just what you mean about knitting. I think it's like when I learned to drive a manual transmission... It just clicks at some point. I also love edible landscapes. Your making me wonder if I can't fit just one more fruit tree on our small property! Hmm, maybe a dwarf 🍐.

Laura, every time I see all the wonderful plants your parents offer I imagine your community has some amazing gardens. I've so enjoyed the tours of yours and your parent's gardens. How about some videos every now and then where you take us on a tour of some of the gardens in your community and introduce us to the gardeners? I mean, what better theme fits under "Garden Answer". Please???
