Hello Nancy, I have all the items except the midi dress. Being 5'2", I feel more comfortable in knee-length dresses, which might explain my hesitation. That said, I absolutely adore how midi dresses look on taller individuals-it’s such an elegant style! As for the other pieces, I have to say, I’m a huge fan of blazers! As you mentioned, they truly elevate any outfit and add a touch of sophistication. Thank you for showing this beautiful selection of "timeless essentials". Wishing you a wonderful week!

I have or have had several of these pieces. As I am 61 years old a still go towards the classic pieces but am also trying to become more casual. I have just gotten rid of the classic double breasted trench that I have had for 15 years because it is just too formal looking and went with a lighter weight tan classic one from Orvis. I also have a navy “blazer” without buttons that is a knit with side pockets that is more casual. Great for travel or in between seasons. I do also love white blouses and have too many because they go with everything. I like to look casual, not sloppy, but put together. I find solid pieces work best with a scarf to change the look. Less clothing is just easier on the mind in the morning. Thank you Nancy for all that you provide us with!

The bright pink sweater over your white shirt looks fabulous on you!🩷 I have all the essentials you mentioned. Especially love wearing scarves. I gave up heels a long time ago- flats are wonderful & plenty of cute options in comfy shoe wear.🥿

Comfy shoes, especially flats, are so important. As someone who wore high heels through university and my early jobs set me up for problem feet in my recent years. I wish I had known then how hard it would be later! Great ideas, thank you.

Yes, done with that! After bilateral foot surgery, it’s ballet flats and loafers for me.

I was pleased to note that have all these items in my wardrobe. I must admit that I get bored every occasionally and then buy something crazy which I will not wear for long. However, as you pointed out scarves are a great way to uplift an outfit

I had to wear pantyhose and pumps for too many years. I avoid both at all costs these days. I attended a black tie wedding last spring. I bought a navy evening gown and paired it with low-heeled sandals and a fresh pedicure. I was comfortable and chic. 😉

Great items here, I'm constrained by budget sadly and do have problem getting JUST the right thing, usually falling short . But I never give up hope! One day the perfect shirt will turn up - tho I will chuck it in the wash and it'll gradually go grey!! Thanks For all the effort you must put in to produce these posts..

If you live in a colder place like I do then you need a warm waterproof jacket. This year I also bought a midi length coat to keep the wind and rain off my legs.

Loved this. As a retired woman who ruined my feet with three inch heels … I’m all about comfortable shoes. I also love the classic items. I have been in the hunt for a perfect white shirt to add to my closet and this helps. I would only add one suggestion… a quality cashmere sweater similar to what you are wearing around your neck. I’ve added a gray one to my wardrobe and it is perfect!

Glad you pointed out that it's necessary to find "your" essentials! I bought a white shirt and it never made it out of the closet - just not my style. Same with the two black blazers, one for winter, one for spring/summer - never worn. However, a camel color J. Crew knit "blazer" gets worn all the time, as does a beige cashmere cardigan and a grey merino wool cardigan. I am retired with a very, very relaxed Philadelphia lifestyle - a blazer at the Acme where I live in East Falls would look strange! I wish I could wear heels but neuropathy and a wide foot makes it challenging to even find the right flat shoes - many of the so-called supportive shoes or comfort shoes are frumpy, to my mind, and I spend way too much time looking for shoes.

I had several white button down shirts and never wore them nor my two chambray shirts that are gathering dust. I have a short wide neck and the shirt collar grazes my ears. Scratch those off my list. I bought a trench coat and it has been hanging in the closet with the tags still on for over a year. Now if you're talking cashmere sweaters and jeans, I'm your woman!

All good staples. I am short and curvy, so my version of these staples is slightly different. Instead of a blazer, I wear stretchy Chanel-style jackets with a zip. My jeans are pull-on, drawstring waist with a wide leg. My 'trench' is a Burberry polo coat (single breasted, no belt): the trench details of belt, double-breasted, epaulettes, storm shield and gun flap is far too much for someone my height - the cleaner lines of a polo coat work better. I add colour with my bags - I only own one at a time and currently it's magenta Saffiano leather.

I'm ready to shop for new frames. What color frames do you think goes with most outfits? I have gray hair. Thanks!

I just got a new white button down. I haven’t even tried it on yet. I’ve had a trench coat for years. I don’t wear it very often. Mine even has a zip out liner. So I could wear it when it gets cooler. I just bought a bunch of flats. But I have plantar fasciitis. And flats aren’t great to wear for a long length of time. I just gave my blue toe bag to my granddaughter. So I need to buy another one. The one I had the straps were too short and I never carried it. So I won’t make that mistake again. I never wear scarves. I’m not sure why, I just don’t. And I also have blazers. I don’t wear them often either. I did wear my black leather one a while ago. It’s either too hot or too cold for me to wear blazers.

I have a Foxcroft White Button Down Shirt No-Iron which has a white on white design. They do not have this design now, yet this white button down has been dressy, and feminine at once. I wish I could replace it as it is starting to show it's wear. I have in the same time been thru other white shirts, material, fit, etc., not the same.

Sad to say but not all of us can afford to wear things like cashmere sweaters and silk scarves, those things cost way more where I live than they do in the US and Europe.

High/mid waist jeans do not work for me as they come up too close to my boobs (not to mention how uncomfortable they are). I am short waisted and I love that we are finally seeing a few low rise jeans back in the shops. I have not been able to buy a flattering pair of jeans for years. Blanket statements like "low rise jeans will give you a muffin top" are just so wrong. It totally depends on your body type.

These items are great for non-plus-size women who evidently don’t live or work in a casual place as I do. Blazers-never need and too fat to get a tailored one anyhow. White shirts? They make me look ghostly with my warm tones-why did you not include ivory, cream, and other tones since 90% of the population looks like crap in white. . Linen sucks because it wrinkles when you look at it. Too fat for jeans. A trenchcoat is totally pointless where I live (hot climate where you either need maybe a cardigan or a heavier coat for the 2 months of winter). Tailored pants? Midi dress? Nope, still too fat. Scarves are pointless unless I need a heavy one for winter. Maybe you can do a video for real women over 50? Only two items on this list are in my wardrobe: flats and cardigans.

Maybe you need to watch the video again. I’m 59 and have been watching Nancy’s videos for 3 years, she always encourages individuality and said in this video to choose colours, cuts, and fit types that you like to make your wardrobe truly personal. Instead of a tailored blazer, why not try a soft blazer that is in a stretchy type fabric like ponte fabric. Maybe a cardigan that looks more like a blazer? These are especially popular the last few years, especially those with gold buttons. A white shirt can easily be a cream one, a soft chambray, etc. blue/white stripe are also really popular and versatile. Consider soft fabrics that drape rather than crisp fabrics that may seem stiff and uncomfortable. Instead of tailored trousers, choose a relaxed fit that compliments one’s body, again ponte type fabrics or anything that has some stretch in it will feel more comfortable. Consider straight leg or flared leg instead of wide leg or narrow leg (think cigarette style). Consider a styling session at your local department store, lots of them offer that service for free or a nominal fee.

I am plus size (3X) and understand your hurt and frustration in not being able to purchase suitable clothing. However I have found that for example, it is possible to purchase a nice jacket - one would chose a soft flowing jacket out of a stretch Ponte fabric rather than a structured blazer. I have found that soft flowing viscose (rayon) blouses are very flattering to a fuller figure. I do love wearing linen, although perhaps as trousers or 7/8 pants. I found the Shopping on Champagne presentation to be very helpful as a guideline - then you adjust according to the colours or fabrics that suit one personally. I have watched many style videos over the years and have learned so much about which clothing styles would flatter me. So please persevere and please don’t lose heart. I wish you well.🌸
