This video was filmed in it’s flagship store (Little Switzerland, Victoria Road, Douglas) the day after Shoprite announced that Tesco had bought all 9 of their stores on the Isle of Man. (10th October 2023)
Shoprite was established in the Isle of Man in 1972 and was a no frills supermarket chain. In the 1990’s it expanded into Scotland and had over 100 stores in its heyday.
The Scotland and UK stores were sold to Kwik Save in November 1994 for £45.7 million. Shoprite then continued on it’s Isle Of Man business.
This video captures the last few weeks of Shoprite before its refit and relaunch as Tesco’s. The store in the video and Little Shoprite in Castletown closed the same day I published this video. The Castletown branch is due to reopen in March (as a Tesco Express) while the store in the video is due to open in March (rumour is that it might be a Tesco home store but it could be a Tesco Superstore)
I’m pretty glad that I filmed the video when I did as the next time I visited the store featured in this video all the Sainsbury’s products had been replaced with Tesco branded products. (Apparently those got reduced and sold pretty quickly)
Also while I was walking around the store filming the video I found quite a few Tesco Price Match banners so it looks like Shoprite was trying to price match all of it’s products to the same price that the product would had been sold in Tesco’s. Before being bought by Tesco! I found the banners quite funny! Just like the Sainsbury’s products these banners have now been removed.
