I live in Ohio now and very much miss ShopRite. Much more reasonable than the supermarkets here. The chain markets here are so expensive! It's weird because the cost of living in Philly and Jersey is more than the cost of living in Ohio. The can can commercials remind me of my childhood. I always loved the can can commericals.

"From Apple Sauce to Zucchini/It's a Can-Can savings spree!" That was part of the old jingle.

The original of this song said, "..from applesauce to zucchini, it's the Shop Rite Savings spree...." Love it! Take me back to the 80's.

For those unaware of the "Shop-Rite" supermarket chain {along a small portion of the East Coast of the U.S.}, their "Can Can" sales are often held twice a year, during the winter and summer (and there ARE good bargains to be had!). The current versions of these ads are more "cartoonish" [with a little painter aping "Toulouse Latrec"] in execution, yet a lot more fun! The woman who mentions the current specials towards the end still does voice-over work for Shop-Rite today.

Shop-Rite is celebrating their 40th Anniversary Can-Can sale. I do remember commercials preceding the animateds that featured a live can-can dancer in silouette. That was scandalous in the 19th Century? Hey, cd, they might cut some stuff, but otherwise, their deals are hardly beat in my neck of the woods.

Thanks. My mom died in December of 2002. And right up until before I'd sk her "whats for dinner?" and She'd say "Shop Rite's got the answer" BTW thats from the 80's not the 70's. But thank you very much. Please send me a link if you ever find it :)

Yeah, that's the one I originally remember, and then this "disco" version replaced it with "can to can to can to can", and all the ones after it follow that (including the current ones). I figured they couldn't go back to the old words because I don't think anyone sells apple sauce in a can anymore, but its funny that it still shown in a can in this one.

Aldi's is awesome! There garbage can and kitchen trash bags are the best buy. They're a full 1 mil. thick (most off brand bags are thinner) and still among the cheapest out there. Sure, some of their stuff is inferior, but you learn what to buy there and what to go elsewhere for.

Aldi isn't just for welfare recipients. It does have off-brands, though. The real "welfare store" is Pathmark, which in my former hometown of Warminster, PA was the dingiest, filthiest, most-expensive supermarket in town, but it has since closed. There were huge yellow signs in Pathmark's windows in both Spanish & English saying that they take food stamps and WIC. (Women, Infants & Children is a program that allows mothers of young kids to buy nutritious food).

It would be if we had a Conservative President and Congress. It was Reagan who made the dollar strong which lowered the cost of goods such as food and gas. .69 gallon gasoline in 1986. Even with inflation our gas was only 1.70 per gallon in January '09 before the tyrant entered.
