I know that there's no rebuild video people, however, this is all you need actually. I did it by takin step by step pics and reversed the process. Clean, clean , clean. Clean everything. If in doubt, throw it out and buy new gear or gears, synchros bearings, seals etc. You don't want to have to repull this cause of a couple bucks on parts. Took mee a couple days cause of work but i fixed mine. Had a bad fifth gear syncro. Works great, shifting great now. Best advice, do not go cheap on the gear oil. It'll save you in the long run. I used the pennzoil syntorq. Just take your time and pics of everything will make this go smooth. Have fun.

I appreciate the teardown video of this transmission. There aren't many detailed videos on the NV4500, but hey, where's the rebuild video you mentioned? It's been almost three months. Are you making that video? I'm planning to begin my rebuild soon, but don't want to tear it down without the reassembly video at the ready too. Thanks!

Very sorry about that. There didn't seem to be much interest on this, so we got rid of the project. Sorry for any inconvenience. Thanks for watching.

@@Shoptoolreviews Also sad no reassembly video. It would be a good video. I'm not youtube savvy on cost vs effort and likes, but I suspect it takes time to get traction on such things given the signal to noise ratio these days. That said, if you approach it like most things and stack parts properly (and take pics) re-assemble it often simple to figure out.

Red locktite will smoke like a banshee when it starts to let go because its a thermoset plastic. There will be no mistaking it. Its used plenty on hydraulic cylinder piston bolts, on which you have to use the higher heat of an oxyace rig. Lots of fun. But basically you'll stink up the shop bad enough to have air out it out for several minutes or more, so I'd hazard that you didnt have that on there. Probably just torqued way higher than your impact will do. Much better with the lower propane heat for that damper anyway.

I have a 93, pretty sure is early 90s, K1500 Chevy, with the NV4500, should I assume it isn't stock, love the transmission but it does have one issue, it pops out of 4th when letting off the gas, anyone know if it's an internal problem, or is it a top loader problem?

Honestly this isn't as bad as I expected. Ill definitely be attempting to rebuild my trans before it goes back in my truck. I'm certain the input shaft bearing is bad. Its going in a single cab truck that wont ever tow more than 7000lbs so should last me a very long time.
@Kernfederate2 жыл бұрын
Did you end up rebuilding it?
@c0c0asauce2 жыл бұрын
@@Kernfederate Yea, I think I have about 1500-1800 miles on it so far. I replaced all the bearings except for the needle bearings because they looked fine. I replaced the synchros because two of them had lost a lot of friction material. I don't have a dial indicator so I just fudged the end play with a set of calipers.
@Kernfederate2 жыл бұрын
@@c0c0asauce Nice! It sounds like it's a pretty straight forward rebuild, would you say? If you recall, about how much did it cost you in all? Mine just started making unhappy bearing noises, so I'm expecting to be doing a rebuild pretty soon, haha.
@c0c0asauce2 жыл бұрын
@@Kernfederate It cost me maybe $280 with the fluid and sealant. It's not bad if you are ok with lifting the transmission case. I only used a map torch and my hydraulic press to help some stuff along. Using the weight of the shafts to help press the bearings on helps a lot. To clarify, it is easier to hold the bearings still and press the gear shaft into the bearing vs holding the shaft still and pressing the bearings onto the shaft. I would also say just replace all of the bearings. The only reason I didn't replace all the bearings in my transmission is because I wanted to prove to myself that the main and countershaft bearings were the culprit of my noise. Plus you don't have to clean the old bearings if you just replace them.

You can,t speak for 95% of us viewers just because you don’t have the skills or interest in doing those things. I thoughtful t that was good info about turning the socket into an extra deep tool to reach all the way down the length of the tail shaft to reach the nut. The GM tool is probably a couple hundred dollars. It was also good info about heating the red Loctite to get the nut loose. I already have a propane torch and tank, but that hand-held torch/bottle setup is cheap at the home store.

Where do I find out what kind of oil to run in my transmission I do not have any tags on it
@lanceleavitt74723 жыл бұрын
Chevy dealer parts counter, Dodge dealer parts counter, Amsoil synthetic. All these are synthetic and do not degrade the syncros. 75/90 wt gear oil.
@mrturner693 жыл бұрын
did it ruin any of the shafts or gears where the bearings ride?
@Shoptoolreviews3 жыл бұрын
There are some darker ares on the shaft, but I think they will cleanup nicely. There are a couple of chipped teeth on the very edge of one gear, and I think I'll dress them up a bit and reuse them. Pretty much just bearings and synchros that need to be replaced. FYI, if this were going be a daily driver, then I'd replace the main shaft and cluster, just for assurance. Thanks for watching.
