How To Lap Valves, Spring Height Micrometer, and Reface Valve Stems [EXPLAINED]

Having the right tool for the right job will always save you time. A Spring Height Micrometer comes in very handy when you do a valve job or change a cam and springs. We used our Makita drill to lap the valves on these LS heads and then installed new springs. After lapping the valves in we made sure to reface the valve stems as well where the rockers make contact. The Spring Height Micrometer made it easy and fast to accurately check the max spring height on each of the valves. All of our measurements were within 0.020 (twenty thousandths), so we didn't need to shim any valve springs.

Fantastic method on the valve stem never thought of that I have a bench drill will drill 90deg perfect and I have thick glass that I used to reface my head as well as now valve stem face after watching thanks heaps

if i have triples can i take spring out to make double? this was a circle track motor now i am putting a comp 490/490 lift cam iron eagle heads sbc 355 which does not require that big of a spring. This is a budget motor. thanks

LMAO Im doing a valve job with new valves and im not coming anywhere close to this valve grinding compound. Im using baking soda tooth paste. Its nice and gritty but does ruin the finish of a new valve and valve seat. But the funny thing about the video is that you can tell he doesn't know what he is doing is because he used the RED scotch bright pad... to clean the head gasket material off the head. You can see how uneven he grinded the head sealing surface. LMAO head is not going to seal looking like that or the motor is going to consume coolant or the coolant reservoir is going to have really high pressure pop off coolant lines but not over heat... This guy is going to be in my facebook group with all these funny symptoms LMAO

FFS, spend your money buying something as useless as a 'spring height micrometer' and scrimp on properly facing the vales and seats. Just another of the couple hundred DIY valve job videos that are promoting nonsense. Measure the free spring length against specification to see if the springs are still good. You don't need to measure the simulated installed height becomes a valve that has been excessively faced or seats have been cut to deep and the inserts need replacing are visually obvious to anyone who knows what they are doing.
