I haven't seen anyone kill the fluke like you man, keep it up! I've learned a ton, but still have yet to land a keeper fluke on the Jersey shore this season.

the hovering after jigging method has brought me a lot of success. At this time of year do bodies of fluke tend to gravitate towards the inlets, will back bay still produce ?

Just caught my first keeper from the shore today. I’ve been working all summer and have been using som of your tips to help me. Do you think you can still catch keeper fluke from the shore in the fall with a single jig?

Is that active ocean or bay area ? I don't see any waves. Water is calm. Are you targeting during slack or low tide ? How to pick the right time ?
@CookingandFishing5 ай бұрын
Pick calm days to start - you need to feel the jig - that is the most important thing.

How do you manage fishing in heavier surf? It's pretty hard to maintain contact with the jig as the waves are tossing it around. Had a couple trips finding only shorts from shore, but seeing this makes me hopeful there's more out there. I've been lazy with finding structure and this is the wake up call needed.

The surf line with a light jig is probably the trickiest part of fluking the way we do. You definitely have to develop a feel for it as the water pushes and pulls your jig...and you have to maintain contact to feel for strikes. Too heavy a jig and it just gets buried in the sand; too light and it gets tossed around on the surface leaving the strike zone. This is where time on the water really counts.

When you're dealing with 3.5+' waves, the tricky part is having your line get caught in the breakers. That's more of an issue than the jig weight itself. Make sure to use the lightest braid/floro (ie 12lb to 12 lb). If that still is an issue, cast in between the breakers or wait for a calm period after each cycle of waves.

That's a good point. Some braids are better at cutting through surface tension than others. Fluorocarbon (say a 20-30ft leader) would give you the best connection to your jig when the surf is churning. Braid's specific gravity and limpness can cause you to lose contact with your jig by being carried in the waves. A longer rod helps you mend your line better too if the fluke are right at the wash and the waves are crashing. All things to experiment with, but imo practice is the most important factor.

@@CookingandFishing I definitely find it much harder to line watch from a beach vs on a kayak. Most strikes tend to be pretty clear but it's hard to tell whether the jig is hitting bottom or if its getting lapped by a wave. I did not consider the density of fluoro. I'll probably break out my 9footer in those conditions. My poor wrist is already aching thinking about it lol. @shoremoney Sounds like a good fix for that issue; that's exactly what I'm experiencing. I'll spool up with some 8lb braid I have lying around. Follow up Q, how do you manage crosswind. Whats the limit to how much you'll fish in?
