God, the way they depict Johnny Five's beating so brutally still makes me shudder. And Ben desperately trying to bring Johnny Five back to life, his "Come on, Johnny Five!" and "PLEEASE! COME OOOOOOOON!" is still heart wrenching to this day.

It took me 30 years to realize that Ben was not played by an ethnic Indian. In today's PC culture stuff like that doesn't fly but I think it's awesome. Fischer Stevens played that role like a damn fiddle, I love it.

Yeah, Ben isn't a negative depiction at all. Stereotypical, yes, but ask any Indian Immigrant and they'll tell you of their own early challenges in adapting to English terminology, phrases, and slang. Sometimes to mixed results. Plus, Ben's a successful Robotics Engineer and Toy Maker.

Thanks guys! ❤ these movies are great. I loved it when it came out and still love it. The second movie here was all filmed in Toronto. Mostly along queen street and then end was at the waterfront east of downtown. When I realised it as a kid I was excited to walk the streets knowing Johnny 5 was there.

I keep on hearing that since it's supposed to be in New York, they had a Hell of a time making it look period-appropriate _dirty_ on the streets. Every time they'd put some junk on the ground it would be picked up whenever they walked away five feet. That says something.

I unironically love this movie, and I actually prefer it to the first one. The entire music score is great, and the showtunes/meat locker sequence is a genuinely magical movie scene. (I also found it pretty funny when I found out years later that both Siskel and Ebert both liked this, even though they didn't like the first one.)

You mention the iconic peeking shot being the VHS cover, but I have a very clear memory of it also being the movie theater standee. Motorized as well so the Johnny 5 would lean in and out. I can't recall if the eyes lit up, but it wouldn't surprise me if that gimmick had also been added.

Short Circuit 1 & 2 were certified classics. In my opinion, 2 was superior. Due to Tim Blaney making (S.A.I.N.T.) Johnny No#5 more human. Ben Jabitua (Fisher Stevens) gets a redemptive arc. Yeah, if you didn't cry when Johnny is assaulted. You have no soul. That being said, that ending, at the naturalization ceremony when Johnny goes gold that made me cry tears of joy. Also, the original poster when you see Johnny in the pool floating raft. That's when you knew that you were in for a real treat. Btw this was the correct use of Bonnie Tyler "I need a hero." 39:13 I miss it when Hollywood would make feel good comedies like this.

That's what people who attack the character for being a degradingly racist depiction of Indians, played by a white guy in brown face, miss: Ben is well-rounded with a heart and soul, not to mention a successful robotics engineer than can build toy replicas of the real thing he once designed while working for Nova Robotics. Yes, his broken english is obviously stereotypical but if you talk to actual Indian Immigrants, they'll tell you of the same struggles to understand English slang and phrases, often mixing it up out of confusion. Ben's own journey as an Indian-American Citizen reflects that.

I will say when Johnny 5 was beaten up and then died that was very emotional for me. Just as bad as when he was blown up in the first one. As a young kid i didn't understand why they were beating him up. So Steve Guttenberg said he regretted not taking a role in the sequel but when the script was written Crosby wasn't included. Ally Sheedy wasn't credited in the movie plus wanted way to much money. The movie was filmed in Toronto Canada but gave the impression it was New York. Jack Weston the actor who played Oscar died a few months after this movie so this was his final movie. There is a 20 minute blooper video on KZbin for this movie i think you would enjoy. Glad you guys reacted to this one as i don't see any other reactions for this movie yet

This movie makes me emotional all over the place. The significance of the two books he needs to read ‘very carefully’, Frankenstein and Pinnochio- and that he could have escaped the police at any time but didnt because it was the right thing to do- the way hes turned away at the church, how hes insulted by the art critics, that hes trying so hard to fit in- it means a lot to someone who has always felt rejected and alone like an alien- and because of these movies i have an affinity for movies like this, and I was charmed by Wall-E of course.

I love both of these movies - were favourites when I was a kid - but damn that sequence of the attack on Johnny 5 and the aftermath was sheer childhood trauma back then, I still recoiled from it in short clips in this reaction, and I'm 46! Almost on a par with "Artax" in The NeverEnding Story. And of course this one has Kenneth Johnson's touch all over it thematically. His body of work in sci-fi/fantasy television from the The Incredible Hulk , to "V", and later with Alien Nation, always championing the "other", and fighting against bigotry. It might not be subtle but the message imparted by Short Circuit 2 comes from a very humane place.

39:15 The best part of the movie. The grand finale. Our hero is broken and he's bleeding to death but that doesn't matter to him right now. Johnny 5 is on a mission of justice and vengeance. He's not only chasing down the man who betrayed him he's trying to outrun the robotic grim reaper. This scene still brings tears to my eyes.

I remember commenting with someone in regards to movie reactions. The other person was saying how much he was looking forward to when the channels would go through all the popular movies of the 80s and 90s so they’d finally start looking back at and exploring some classics. I joked that that wouldn’t happen. Once the movie react channels went through all the most popular movies of the 80s and 90s, they’d then simply start watching all the mediocre, disposable, and forgettable movies of the 80s. Like Police Academy, Crocodile Dundee, and Short Circuit. 😂 Looking forward to your guys reaction to the Crocodile Dundee series! 😅

Thx for reacting to this. Just realized that the cargo van from the 1st movie had a lot of spare parts enough to build some more units. Doubt Newton&Stefanie would allow Johnny#5 to go out of their supervision. This Johnny5 in this movie might be a DUPLICATE considering that he made a duplicate of himself that was blown up from the end of the last movie. So it's not out of the question that this duplicate would go out in the world and then would return back or phone back with all of the new data/experience that it gained.

Unironically my favorite of the two movies. Obviously it's not as good as the first one - but it's so cute and wholesome (most of the time) and the fact Johnny 5 runs around a city is great. The music in the movie is incredible. I was 15 when this came out, and still remember seeing it in the theater. The experience was terrific, until the scene where they beat up Johnny 5 - I still remember hearing kids in the theater literally crying. But the movie is basically a way to show people empathy and love. It's a shame Guttenberg and Sheedy didn't come back for this one, but I understand why and the movie works without them as it is. Johnny 5's voice actor (I always forget his name) is just having a ball in this one. Still hoping we get some sort of continuation one day. Either a new sequel or even a reboot I guess. But it has to have the original voice actor to play Johnny 5 still. Maybe a crossover with Chopping Mall :D

And the music change makes sense considering the change in Johnny’s adversary. The music in the first one well represented a giant, corporate defense contractor. But then you have some tunes in 1 like when Johnny takes off with Stephanie’s snack wagon that could have easily also been in 2 and not sounded out of place.

In all honesty, I think if one was to make a third film, I think it would be interesting to follow J5 in modern day, with the modern rise of AI, and him existing in a world that seems to be more accepting of robot sentience, but only recently have people been able to manually create AI without any lightning strikes. But J5 is aware that these newer robots are not quite the same, and he has to deal with various people misusing AI, and also try to understand why all of a sudden everyone is either against machines, or are embracing them, but for questionable reasons! While yes, it would be a topical movie, It doesn’t have to be like a pro-AI or anti-AI story. I’d imagine it could be a story where both sides are explored and instead of an “AI all good or all bad” movie, it should have a much more nuanced take on the subject!

It's waaay better than the first one. So few have reacted to this on KZbin. Damn I want that little Johnny 5, even if it doesn't move. And yeah that beating hurt to watch, especially since I have an affinity for machines and robots. But damn I love when he's beat up and getting fixed but bugging and then goes after them with the song. Every time I hear I Need A Hero I think of this scene. I do not like that he's all gold at the end though haha.

Oh god you can't make someone watch this cold. The level of trauma I carry around with me from watching both Short Circuit 1 and 2 on TV on consecutive nights when I was 7... Actually now that I think about it, it was mainly from re-watching them a few months later because I'd taped them, and for some reason both of them hit harder the second time even though I already knew the happy endings to both parts. But I digress, the beating scene has to be one of the most disturbingly violent things ever to find its way into what was marketed as a kids movie. It's almost cruel to make someone watch it for the first time.

Hooo. That Mean Johnny tee shirt hits hard. 🤩 Being a child of the 80's, political correctness can jump from a cliff. SC2 was a great entertaining movie about a rag tag group of people & villains who got their comeuppance (that Bonnie Tyler song was EVERYWHERE at the time). I would love a 3rd movie to close the saga but it would have to be financed & produced by independent fans, with the real tin can & not CGI. Thanks for sharing this.💙🤖🦿🦾

I've watched both the first and second of the Short Circuit movies years ago. But only just found out that the actor who played the Indian inventor of Johnny Five was actually white! Quite a revelation indeed! I've read though that the guy actually now regrets playing the role because of how times have changed which of course is completely understandable. But heck, I'm still surprised that he was white guy all along. They did a good makeup job on him and he played his part pretty convincingly.

Short Circuit 3, Johnny 5 battles new A.I. Or the new A.I. is an evil Johnny 5 and a battle between the two takes place. Like Superman 3 kinda. It could work

If you like Michael McKean, there is a great video here on KZbin, with an interview of him and his wife about their first date. "Broadway First Dates: Michael McKean and Annette O'Toole". It's really inspiring, ahh this is what true love should be like.

Short Circuit 2 is my favorite of the two but I think of them as chapter 1 and chapter 2, conjoined permanently

When it comes to telling people how you feel, it really isn’t complicated. People make it complicated. There’s a reason we have mouths. All we have to do, is tell them. No subtle hints, flirts, forget all that. Nobody is a mind reader. If anyone is not willing to tell a person how they feel, then they don’t deserve that potentially good relationship. You’re going to have to put yourself out there if you want to know for sure. Simple.

I have a theory that J5 became embittered by his treatment by humans as documented in these movies, and changed the name of Input, Inc. to Cyberdyne Systems in the '90s.

This is such a sequel cliche, and everything about it shouldn't work. Plot, relationships, setting, etc.... But man, it does work, I absolutely love this movie. This is where my friend Number 5 became like a brother Johnny 5. I will say on Jan 11 2024 two historic things happened, Belichick departs as coach of Patriots...and I found someone (Robert) that loves Short Circuit as much as me.

Did this movie predict that we would have a robotic citizen; Look up Sophia the robot by Hanson Robotics; she was made a citizen of Saudi Arabia;

The biggest disappointment of this movie...was that the toy Johnnies were never commercially available.
