I'd like to think that the parallel scene in the end - Julija drowning as she's being rescued, is a metaphor for the expired/deceased friendship. Even though Ana seems to care in the final scene, maybe she feels it too and is just grieving the lost closeness to her previous best friend - everything's different now as they have grown apart. And the significance of the water sermon in the beginning is perhaps that it's a contrast to the end - a water funeral ritual for the died friendship. Julija deliberately pushes Ana off the cliff as she realizes the friendship is over. And maybe the baptism of the lizard symbolises the introduction of Pjero - he's the snake in Julija's paradise

Only with the love of God, with the water of love can we be cleaned and set free. The ending is symbolism of Gods water, a baptism and a chance for another rebirth. The water by the end is an escape from violence and an escape to love.

She died with head injury. That drowning shot is what she is feeling while dying.

Your film still moves me . I identify with Julija's character sooo much ; and I'm 55yrs old ex-punk Englishman ha ha . I'm glad to see (just now) your work won such high acclaim . You (and the wonderful actress) convey so much unspoken emotion to the screen - this film could be understood with no dialogue - it would 'almost' be more powerful without . I put it up on Pinterest after first watch - if I could sponsor your next project I would . You have an eye for reflecting the obvious without needing to swamp the general deitics with 'soap opera' bullshit .
