Nice clean doubles Rick, inspiring stuff. Thanks for sharing your vast knowledge so eloquently. By the way, my old teacher Henry Adler invented the practice pad you use. It was originally called “the quiet tone drum mute“ and he worked for many years to try and market it. I was told the earliest Proto types had a little hinged door on top (near the edge I assume) that could be opened and closed for volume control/variance. At the time, it was the very finest practice pad ever invented, and I still believe that it is. It’s too bad the product never reached vast success during Henry’s lifetime and honestly, I still believe it hasn’t achieved it’s due.

Hi Yes I am aware of that. I talk about that in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHSoq3-ultiqa80 I have some of the original pads from the 60's that are much different than what is available now and I agree that it is the best pad ever made.

rickdior A while back I had a full set. I somehow got a hold of an old prototype bass drum quiet tone mute as well, not a successful design, but a good attempt.

Hi Rick Your videos are so very informative and full of technical exercises that are so important. Your examples are thorough and very helpful. You have impeccable hand technique demonstrated by the material on the practice pad and the drumset. Seeing as you play all the snare exercise material on the practice pad standing up .... how do all the "levers" (for lack of a better word), ie: height of snare, distance above the snare via the hands, seat height ..... how does this all translate when you play drumset sitting down? Are you hands positioned the same way as they are standing up? Are there any changes to the grips and or technique made .... seeing that we play drumset sitting down. Getting around to the tom toms is something quite different than standing and playing snare drum. Could you please touch on the differences and what adjustments you make, if any? Thank you for all your great content. Remarkable.

Hi John Thanks for the kind words. I don't really make any adjustments when I sit down. I would actually prefer to sit down and I often practice my hand technique sitting down. For the purpose of the videos standing up gives a better view since my camera tripod only goes so low and a straight on view is better so you can see whats going on. If you look at the drumset videos you can see that things pretty much look the same when I am sitting except that my brain is in drum set mode so I may be a hair more relaxed.
