Short Takes: 1998 Ford Ranger XLT Stepside (Start Up, Engine, Full Tour)

I had an '02 Ranger 3.0 V6 2wd model as my first car. It was in perfect condition with 140k miles when I got it. I sold it a year ago with 250k miles and it still ran and shifted smoothly. Never burned oil in between 5k oil changes, and never needed any maintenance besides oil changes, spark plugs and wires once, front brakes, and a set of tires. Good on gas too.

My Mom and Dad have a 05 Ranger Edge 4x4 4 door with the 4.0 sohc engine. Its the charcoal grey color. It rides very nice and is very quiet for a smaller truck. Also it is fast to. It's been a great truck, never been stuck in snow. My Dad has pulled to many cars and trucks out of the snow last and this year. The 4.0 is a brute..

Pre '01 was the OHV 4.0 v6 which put out 160hp which was similar in design to the 3.0 Vulcan. It proved to be a more reliable engine than the 4.0 SOHC because pre '02 Explorers and some Rangers experienced timing chain failure due to plastic guides. I believed this flaw was fixed in '03-'05.

I had a 4.0 '98 4x4 extended cab, no campcover, manual windows, side mirrors, and door locks, but with the rear half-doors...Nice truck...

I have a 97 regular cab Ranger. 4 cyl, 5 speed with over 220k miles (it stopped there almost a year ago). This truck is absolutely mind-boggling. Lol, I think it may run forever. The only work that has been done to it is a timing belt at around 150k, and brakes, tires, and regular oil changes. Still has ice cold air, and gets great mileage. Just goes to show there can be quality US vehicles!

@toastedbum The 4.0 SOHC was actually used in the mustang. VERY fast engines for a truck of this size.

depending on whether its aluminum or fiberglass, i've been told at my local store, starting prices are $750~ for aluminum or $1000 for fiberglass and very basic.

@clutch1542 the s-10 Ranger really comes down to a Ford guy chevy guy thing. however my brothers very first truck was a 88 chevy silverado. then a 90 something ford ranger it was pretty nice had power everything. then he traded it in for a brand new 2008 Chevy silverado which has been in the shop quite a few times.

Kyle, that is the 4.0 OHV. They didn't put the SOHC 4.0's in the rangers until 2001

What the fuck? D: i drive a maroon 1997 ranger xlt and the 1998 ranger has soooo mane better features. Electric windows, air conditioning, cd player, lock and unlock key button, airbag control, cruise control, power outlet, power mirrors, tilt steering wheel, more warning lights, better raidio, better sound system, adjustable seats, four wheel drive control........the difference between 1997 and 1998 on the rangers makes me wanna kill someone haha.. The 1997 is like a Flintstone vehicle.
