I own an 02 Ranger 4.0 SOHC with 145,000 miles and I'll say one really big thing to look for if youre buying a used one in the 98-2006 4.0 SOHC models is take it for a test drive to get the engine warm then let it sit and idle and LISTEN for a constant or intermittent rattle. The timing chain tensioners are poorly designed in these years and when they fail the chain destroys the flimsy guides and the chain will get more and more slack til it jumps timing and fails catastrophically.

My dad bought an 88’ Ranger XLT in late 1987 in Pennsylvania just the single cab with 4x4. I drove it later in the early 2010s as a winter vehicle as I made a poor choice in choosing mustangs as my daily drivers and passed the 200k mile mark on the original transmission, 2.3L engine and transfer case. Replaced some components through the years to keep it manageable like u- joints, exhaust etc.. but he didn’t even consider getting a new paint job until it’s 25th anniversary as someone trying to squeeze in an alley way with a moving truck an scraped the side. He got it painted, fix some rust holes in the frame himself prior but never the frame. Sold it about 4 or 5 years ago to a guy we knew through my brother even for a few grand and found out later he drove to Colorado and back to Pennsylvania. As far as I know, one of the 3 most bulletproof domestic vehicles ever made other than certain year Chevy Cavaliers and the box style Cherokee Limited.

My 2004 gmc sierra is almost 17 years that I bought new with no rust with 200,000 miles . It even bodes a 6 cylinder engine with roll up windows . No polished wheels sad to say . Paint is good

I regret selling my ranger. It was no frills, but it was reliable

We still have our 1999 Ford Ranger. Wife drives it to work every day. It has 137,000 miles on it. The truck has been great and we plan on driving it till it no longer drives.

I have a 02 with 89k miles in Florida and there is not a spec of rust on it. Its mint and currently wrapped. I love me a nice ranger.

The only knock I got against my 05 ranger is that it is a 3 liter auto and not the 4 liter manual. Still real happy with it though. (and it's only 2WD... 4WD comes in handy in candian winters)

14 years with 117k miles? It was only driven 8k miles a year! That thing’s barely ever been driven! No wonder it’s like new! Lol

My 5-speed ‘09 Ranger, I miss. Unfortunately, my son totaled it, but it protected him - walked away with just a couple bumps.

Rangers were great trucks. I had a 91 Ford Ranger and that thing had over 300,000 miles on it before I sold it. Kind of miss that old truck.

Got a 4.0 sohc in my 06 mustang at around 200,000 miles as my daily, starts instantly and runs perfect. It will not die

The beauty about those rangers that are body on frame, and even if the bed is rusty if the frame is rotten away, but the body still good as well as the truck bed you can just do a frame swap not like a body where the floor has on it you can kiss it goodbye

Scotty 👍 gets more excited reviewing an older vehicle...😀 than a new one with all that electronic crap and plastic beauty covers too much tech negates reliability. scotty is old school spend your money wisely... I couldn't agree more 👍 keep exposing the truth. For a daily reliable driver n/a rules
