this is a really helpful video, I intend on using the info in teaching myself the hockey stop as a means of both speed control and being able to emergency stop to avoid hitting other skiers and snowboarders. Thank you.

Hi there, they are Rossignol Pursuits, so are a more piste orientated ski but Guy likes to ski on them most days and then brings out the Soul 7s when deeper.

Hello Guy, thanks for the video. Do you consider short radius turn to be linked hockey stop? Do you have early edge at the beginning of the turn or do you feel light at the beginning of your turn?
@AlltracksAcademy
@AlltracksAcademy 8 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your interest in this video. To answer your questions: 1 - No, I do not consider linked hockey stops to be the same as short radius - rather a drill to help discover how articulation of major joints can aid in creating grip - toward the end of the turn at first, but then further up the turn through practice. 2 - I think that too much emphasis is place on "early edging". I prefer to think in terms of early steering (achieved as a result of edging, pivoting and pressure), ideally all three should be present above the fall-line. 3 - if those elements are achieved, then at any given speed the period of lightness will be minimised. Important to note that as speed increases, inevitable lightness will occur at initiation. The way we manipulate our ski at this moment in critical to success later in turn...Thanks, Guy

Guy, thanks much for your detailed reply. 1. In short radius turn, do you control speed by rounding up the turn more? 2. Do you have any hockey stop feeling at the END of the turn? 3. Is ski's width essential, too? What is yours in this video?

The end of a short turn should definitely feel similar to a hockey stop, but obviously it will be "arced" more. Take a look at this tip for the relevant progression: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5XbhHSiob2iodU

A turn won't happen unless you get off your downhill foot and balance on your uphill arch. Turns are not made by forcing the skis around. You might want to read my comment above.

I hate to complain but the focus on a hard edge set is anathama to flow and linking turns together. It also leads to Zed turning in the steeps and creates nasty chopped off moguls. I trust you have further lessons to mitigate these effects.

Like almost All KZbin Ski Teaching Videos, this was show with no tell. His words meant nothing and didn't teach you what he was Actually doing. You have to be a Three Dimensional Thinker to do that. Just Reacting to what they see will not be teaching how to make it Look Like that. This is what he was doing to Allow his ski to make a tight turn. Let's say you are making lazy sliding turns down the hill and you suddenly have to stop. You make sure you are off your inside ski as you thrust your knees forward, your hip into the hill and your upper body down the hill. This will make sure you are balanced on the arch of that turning ski as it turns sharply. You don't think about the turn, you think about what You have to do to allow the skis to make the turn. All that jumping around stuff is not needed.
@Pietzkee
@Pietzkee 5 жыл бұрын
I doubt you think about your hips, your knees or your upper body position at all. Nobody can focus on so many different things at a time, aspecially not while performing quick movements. If you throw a ball, you are not thinking about the elbow- or your shoulder angles. You're just thinking about the target and every part of the movement automatically lines up. Exercises like the showed one just give you a specific focus, so multiple parts of your body can work together (unconsciously) to reach that goal. Understanding the physics of a given motiric task can be helpful, but motoric learning (sadly) doesnt work that way.
@JB91710

@@Pietzkee You are right! My explanation was for a hard and quick stop, not general turns. What I described is what you Naturally do to balance on one arch. I was just explaining What that is that you have to do. What he did is Show with No tell. He did what I said, he just didn't tell you what you have to do with your body to allow that to happen. if you Mimic what you see, you will not See everything you need. You will React to what you see, you won't Think about it because there is actually Engineering and Physics involved. You have to Look for that when you develop a teaching method. Then you have to turn that information into words and analogies that are easy to understand. That is the difference between a Two Dimensional Reactor and a Three Dimensional Thinker. Almost All instructors just show and tell you what it Looks Like, I tell you what you need to do to make it look like that. 2:24 In this demonstration, he is Showing you what those turns look like but not what to Think about to make those turns happen. Notice his body from his kneecaps up is doing nothing. All he needs to do to allow the skis to turn is get off his downhill ski as it passes under him. That bouncing he does it not necessary. Stop the video when his skis are crossing under him. If he takes his weight off that downhill ski and thinks, "I want to go straight down the hill", his entire upper body will fall down the hill while his skis are still crossing the hill, the uphill foot will roll over and the ski will turn as designed. I just Taught you, he Showed you! Everything you need to Know about skiing is right here. I said Know, not See! www.Patreon.com/JB91710

Guy... I think you should review he opening of your video and watch how you really ski, then compare the movements and concepts to your lesson. Your personal short turns are great but I think what you will find is there are very few commonalities between your skiing and what you are teaching in this lesson. The lesson is counterproductive because everything taught here has to be unlearned. In the opening, every turn you make has a round turn shape which is proper. Your hockey stop in the lesson has no real shape and there is no mention of it. Why do we need turn shape? Because turn shape is what really controls speed when actually skiing, not braking action. Secondly,you are teaching the skiers to use the outside ski as the actively dominant ski. You don't ski like that. You use the inside. So why do you teach it? Don't believe me? Watch your turns. The inside ski engages nanoseconds ahead of the outside in every one of your turns. You use the inside ski as your active ski and let the torque transfer to your outside through your pelvic girdle. The application of pressure is as you ski is PASSIVE as demonstrated in your opening . Having the body in the correct position as centripetal force and momentum pull the skier onto the outside ski which is why the outside gets proper pressure. It is dictated by the turn shape, which is guided by the INSIDE ski. The keys to skiing are simple: 1) Turn shape. 2) Continuous active INSIDE ski. 3) Proper lateral body position (positioning between the skis- which unlocks the feet and allows guidance thru the turn shape). All of those elements link up and provide stability and balance almost automatically. Sorry to be critical, but in good conscience I cannot let the concepts in this "lesson" go unchallenged. Gero.
@jamesdunn9714
@jamesdunn9714 8 жыл бұрын
The outside ski only gets proper pressure if the skiers alignment is correct. As to active inside ski, yes and no. The inside ski can be active or just along for the ride. One can steer the inside ski for example or just focus on steering the outside ski. Focus is the key word.
@academyofskiing2344
@academyofskiing2344 7 жыл бұрын
Gero, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a professional skier who skis on their inside ski. In most of the powder shots he has a decently even balance on his feet with slightly more on the outside. Good form, hands up and eyes are forward. There are a million ways to brake on skis, including turn shape, and hockey stops, although some organizations would prefer that you do it a specific way. What he is teaching can be applied to a number of situations. Including hop turns, traversing in a steep area to a turn etc.

@@jamesdunn9714 Why did you have to blow your own comment out of the water by saying steering? Again, you skis steer your feet by the way you position your upper body and balancing on one arch after the other. Your inside ski IS along for the ride. You get it out of the way so your outside ski can do it's thing. The lower you get the more it LOOKS LIKE the ski is digging in but what are you going to do with it! That outside ski has to maintain control of the turn.
