Now, if I'm not mistaken, Kasparov... is assembling his pawns... yes, into a Mega Chessatron. This isn't looking good for Short.

Good clear commentary, plus 2D chessboard visuals, plus sporadic clips of the contenders= fantastic chess experience; yet this was the 80's, and no such experience can be witnessed even on the 2014 matches available on KZbin.

Honestly, this commentary and instant board visuals is much better than today's programs with idiot chess wannabe champions giving us lines and variations that spoil the fun of watching two great players battle it out. Do the analysis later and let people enjoy the game especially blitz games.
@radar9561
@radar9561 7 жыл бұрын
People who are lower rated enjoy the line analysis because it helps to explain some of the less obvious moves. Besides, Ray Keene here is clearly not on the same level as Kasparov and Short - consistently recommending White to queenside castle into an open C file to facilitate an attack on black when Kasparov has not yet committed his king, either. Evgeny Miroshnichenko, for example, is commenting on the current FIDE world Rapid and doing a great job of actually predicting the top level play.

The commentator's a Grandmaster who was trying to give commentary that was geared toward a television audience, which might contain many people who are not highly familiar with chess. I should know--I have one of his books (The Simon & Schuster Book of Chess, by Grandmaster Raymond Keene). He was trying to explain what was going on at a beginner level, with the goal of making it seem exciting (hoping to increase the popularity of the sport).

It is so interesting so see kasparov in this old video. Kasparov, 1987, flamant new world champion,.but still is a kid, he is not the confident man that today is Kasparov in front of the camera. I would even say that Kasparov really struggles in this tv situation. You can see in this kasparov how hurt he was after losing a winnning position. Today kasparov is a businessman, a motivator, a.speech giver, but in 1987 kasparov was a just a chess player.

what a stupid commentator. at 9:4o when Short moves the rook the commentator says one shouldn't move the same piece twice in the opening. well...the game is long past the opening at this point. he says that Kasparovs knight on e5 is sitting on an outpost. thats not an outpost. the knight is just placed there. an outpost is a square defended by one or two pawns. does this guy know chess at all, or does he normaly do football commentaries?!
@CT2507
@CT2507 10 жыл бұрын
Alan Peart oh really mr strong player!... lol lets see what the wikipedia says: An outpost is a square on the fifth, sixth, or seventh rank which is protected by a pawn and which cannot be attacked by an opponent's pawn. ...if its not protected by a pawn then any square can be an outpost, and there is no sense in even calling it that, now is there... opening theory had ended (like u yourself said) and they began going for positional play, that means mid game has started. just because they didnt choose to castle dont mean they are still in the opening game. there are many games in which castling is left for much later or avoided all together. so, dont make clever and condescending remarks when u are not that intelligent. it just makes u look dumb...lol

***** If I'm not mistaken, the commentator is actually a better player than you :P I mean no offense, or anything.. but it's simply what I saw someone reply to this same comment 2 years ago PS:So it doesn't make him in anyway, really stupid or anything. His judgment can be mistaken at times.. Commentators aren't mind readers bro Also when it comes down to sicilian I believe the opening can be way up to 20moves.. o-o
@CT2507
@CT2507 10 жыл бұрын
Raja M sure... he could be better than me, and probably is. its his comments i dont agree with, not his skill level, which i can never know. and what has mindreading to do with anything in this video?! sure there can be varitations that go up to 20 moves in the sicilian. but thats not what we se here is it? they have left theory and started doing their own movements. thats why i dont see them being in the opening anymore... just cause they havent castled dont put them in the opening. as i said. a lot of players choose not to castle for diferent reasons.
