Live at the Hippodrome, 1987. World Champion Garry Kasparov goes against the highest rated British player Nigel Short for the London Docklands Speed Chess Challenge Trophy.
Nigel desperately needs a win after losing the first 2 games to the World Champion.
Very original play by both players. Kasparov unusually plays the Reti and Short answers with the Chigorin Defense. Live commentary by Grandmaster Ray Keene.

The only way he can defend his Bishop is by moving his rook to c2, then on Blacks next move he will put his Queen on b1, simultaneously attacking the Rook and Bishop. After that, one of those pieces will be lost with nothing in return. Meanwhile, Black's King is incredibly safe, all of his pieces are protected, White's Queen is on the opposite side of the board in an utterly helpless position... There's just nothing that Kasparov could do.

Ne3 (d5-e3) is already a check.. so the king would have moved to the second rank.. but then again queen takes c1 after Nxc2, and then its just a matter of time.. pretty much a lost cause for Kasparov.. A very good unorthodox game, this one..!

Because white have no option to attack the king, pieces are not connected too. Only way to defend Bishop is Rb3, but then check with Ne3+, Kf2 (best option), then Nxb3. but, as i said, no option to attack the king in one move. so... here's some moves : let's say Qxe7, just taking material really. Qxc1 for black, Qe8+ white (mere attack), Kxh4 black, Qxa4 for white. Then it's done, it's just chasing the king to the check mate starting by Qe3+.

I analyzed this game with Fritz 13, when Nigel plays H6 at 2:32, its a horrific, game losing blunder, every move played after this on both sides until Kasparov finally takes the rook is also considered a blunder. Its as if by not taking the rook Kasparov is saying "Look I'm letting you win this game but lets make it look believable" and Nigel is replying "I blundered, I don't deserve to win".

I analyzed it too, with stockfish. Although white gains 0.5 points at H6, I wouldn't call that a horrific blunder. If white would then take the rook with the bishop, the value goes down from +1.3 to -1.2. Further on in the game, white rook to A8 and to C8, now thát were blunders :). Keep in mind this is a quick game: 'blunders' like H6 which loses 0.5 points, are extremely common here.

@ 8:47 , what if Kasparov would have moved Rd8 instead of g4? threatening the knight, and eventually sacrificing his rook to take that knight and making it possible for his queen to take short's rook and then attack the king?
