@@matrixfull Well these days there are fewer times when a Linux Guru tells that a problem is simple, you just need to recompile the OS with a slight modification. And that is the good thing about Linux, you can change it to fit your needs. Just recompile with you choice of rewritten code. And no I am not kidding, that was and may still be one of the reasons you are supposed to be thrilled with it.The good news that, as far as I can tell, you can get a range of Linux Distros that made by people that are a bit more in touch with the real world.

@@ethelredhardrede1838 The only one that involves "recompiling the entire OS" is Gentoo. I don't run it because that's both inconvenient and also means it takes 600 years to install Firefox. @TheJackiMonster3 жыл бұрын
@@user-nz4dr1sy5g There are multiple problems. First off they wanted to use hardware which supports using open drivers and firmware and it was quite some time ago they selected that hardware. Then they also needed a chip which offered the possibility for long term support which isn't quite common for many ARM chips as well. The price is mostly that high because of the software development which you are paying for besides the actual hardware. They started to port a whole desktop OS by developing an own compositor, a graphical shell, multiple libraries to handle new way of interaction and adjusting already existing applications for the small form factor. There is also pretty much kernel development going on for the chip they are using and the necessary drivers for other builtin parts. The progress they've made is incredibly huge already. Also all changes are published and upstreamed to the mainline applications and even the kernel. So other phones and similar projects in the future can build on top of that. Currently, sure the phone isn't quite ready for general consumers who don't want to tinker with anything. But because it's all open source these phones or next generations will pretty much only improve over time because it's not possible to lock away features, improvements or regressing in a way without the users being able to just backroll patches. The removable battery, modem and WiFi-card all enhance the fact that you can enhance or at least repair the device later on.

@sinekonata3 жыл бұрын
@@matthewtompkins4338 Apple stuff is crazy expensive for what it offers in terms of quality and features but I assume he has enough money that paying the Apple tax isn't a concern for him. So if we focus on the software part of it, what has macos/ios to offer over the alternatives? It really is baffling that a power user would be interested in the fool proof advantages of it rather than in the much greater control even a Windows or Android user has over their OS. Let alone Linux users. How a power user can stand the walled garden at all is beyond me. I know a few developers who use Mac, but they're pretty transparent about it that they're willing to sacrifice control for staying truer to their (aspiring) social class. This guy doesn't seem that interested in social status though. I'm assuming he's a power user, but I don't really know for sure though. I assumed so because he likes Linux but now that I think about it that's no guarantee that he knows much about software. After all, any software nerd would be super excited to start playing around with the phone immediately, plugging it to a keyboard/monitor or installing shit on it. Maybe even start coding or hacking it. But he didn't seem that excited about any of that. > so when it comes to phones he just wants it to work But android also just works. Maybe in the US it's culturally much harder not to buy Apple stuff. That's probably going to be my guess for this all.
@matthewtompkins43383 жыл бұрын
@@sinekonata They’re Canadian, not in the US. Developers generally like MacOS because of the Terminal, being a Unix based system and all. That on top of the excellent hardware and user-friendly software make it a no-brainer for mobile use. Anthony’s laptop is 9 years old. Most laptops don’t get that old before crapping out. Not only that, but Apple products really aren’t that expensive. Let’s look at a few comparisons. For MacBooks, other products in its class are things like the HP Specter, Dell XPS, and Lenovo ThinkPad X1. All of these are at an identical price point. It comes down to preference in Anthony’s case. But in the case of buying a new laptop the Macs win, because the M1 silicon is efficient and powerful compared to other ultrabooks in that price bracket. For iPhones, it’s pretty easy to compare. You’ve got the $700 flagship, the $1000 pro version, and the $400 budget phone. All of these have competition in their respective price brackets. None of them are more expensive than any other comparable phone such as the Google Pixels or Samsung Galaxies Lots of people want devices that just work if they have no interest in messing with them. Android has come a long way but a lot of people just prefer the iOS experience. Me personally? I use Linux as a daily driver for my desktop and have an iPhone, and want a MacBook Air for my mobile computer. I used to have an Android phone. Didn’t like it. Didn’t care to mess with it. Don’t like supporting Google when I can help it either. The Apple Tax doesn’t really apply to most of the consumer devices like headphones, laptops, and phones. Linus even breaks down in their iMac Pro repair that a similarly specced desktop would have cost nearly the exact same (where the huge cost came in was replacement parts) Macs aren’t about “social status.” They’re a valuable tool for a mobile workstation environment, especially to software developers. If your friends can’t quantify to you why they prefer a Mac for their work, I can only assume they don’t know much about what they’re doing or they don’t think you know that much about what they’re doing.

@jameswarnock56553 жыл бұрын
I've had my Librem 5 for about a year and the improvement in that time has been amazing. I don't disagree with anything you said, but I also like to think about the Librem 5 differently from other smartphones. For one thing, though they started with an existing OS, it still took an immense amount of work to get all of the drivers, compositor and shell implemented to get it working on a phone-sized device. As for UI polish, iOS and Android have been polishing their UIs for more than ten years. I am hopeful that given some time, Purism and the Open Source community will be able to improve it drastically. With respect to the price, there is a lot of subsidizing that happens with modern phones (for example companies that want their app to come preinstalled and not be able to be uninstalled), Purism certainly doesn't do that yet and the assumption is that they never will. Also, volumes on the Librem 5 are pretty low. I expect that any large phone manufacturer would never develop a phone that they expected to only sell as many as the Librem 5 has sold. More volume means lower prices. I was never really all that interested in the privacy aspect of the Librem 5. I just wanted a smartphone running Linux and the Librem 5 is that. Though, as you point out, it is not really comparable to existing smartphones now. The only other real option that I am aware of is the Pinephone which has a very different ideology. So, I want both Purism and Pine to succeed and continue to develop Linux as a mobile OS option. I hope that one day mobile Linux can compete with iOS and Android in the same way that desktop Linux completes with Windows and OSX. Desktop Linux. And just like in the desktop space, I don't expect mobile Linux to ever capture the same market share that desktop Windows and OSX have, I just hope it lasts as a viable alternative. Also as with desktop Linux, switching from iOS or Android to mobile Linux will require some sacrifices and adjustments to how you do things. Very few-if any-of the popular apps are ever going to show up in the PureOS store. If you still want to use those apps, you will likely have to do it through a browser which is frequently a less than ideal option. Purism has open sourced most-if not all-of their software and hardware and a lot of code written by them has been merged into upstream projects. So, even if they aren't able to continue to produce the Librem 5. The barrier of entry for developing a Linux smartphone has been lowered. I thought your review was very fair and I would provide the same tl;dr as you did to anyone considering the Librem5: It isn't ready for use by the average person, but it might be worth watching if you have a use case that it matches. If all you care about is a fancy UI and all of the apps you already use, mobile Linux is unlikely to ever be the right option for you. If however, you want to move away from companies that sell your data, mobile Linux might be a step in that direction. If you want a phone that gives you all control, mobile Linux is a great choice. And if privacy is everything to you, the Librem 5 may be your only option because of the hardware kill switches and isolated radio modules. I backed the campaign in 2017, so it was a long wait to get my device but I don't regret that choice.

@@lynchcreekmuzzy5759 The $2000 Librem is only the “Made in the USA” version. Which you may or may not need. I think that version is mainly intended for people with a threat model that includes state actors intercepting the supply chain. I would expect that very few people have such a threat model and those that do know who they are. It’s also possible that the USA version is a way to make sure not to support companies with bad human rights histories. I don’t pretend to know a great deal about that. If I knew that the standard version was produced in factories that were violating human rights, I would definitely be willing to pay the $1200 to ensure I wasn’t supporting that assuming I absolutely needed an L5. But I don’t know that, and and I don’t know how much better the USA version is. The standard version is $799 USD. Which, while still high for the specs, is much more accessible. I have heard good and bad things about the Pine Phone just as there are good and bad things about the L5. I think the main selling points of the L5 over the Pine phone are slightly higher specs and isolated radio modules. As for Laptops, Purism also sells laptops running their Debian based PureOS that is also geared towards privacy. But they are expensive. I have never purchased a laptop with Linux pre-installed, but if that is what you want System76 has laptops with their Debian based PopOS. Though they are also expensive. I think ShortCirtuit did a review of a System76 laptop previously. Then there is the route of just finding a good laptop and installing Linux on it. That is what I do when I need a Linux laptop.
@SpeedKreature3 жыл бұрын
Firstly, yes there is a lot of work to be done on the Librem 5. Even the hardware was still evolving until recently. Hardware acceleration has been on the to-do list for a while now, but the focus is on privacy first, then user experience. Certain public and private entities have made the former focus a real challenge over the last year. Next, for those who want to order one, you will have to be patient. It may take literally years to get your phone. I've been waiting for my first since 2018. The supply chain is generally not privacy friendly; patience and tenacity are required in this fight. Finally, I would love to see more content related to emerging open-source options to mainstream devices. I thought this review was honest, insightful, and entertaining.

@Zippy Dastrange I don't need that much storage yet but at the time I was looking for a phone it was either heating up like crazy socs (although enough performance for my needs) or "ok, doesn't heat up but slow as fuck shit, can't even switch between some chat apps without waiting the whole operation to take like 10 seconds" ones. So I've had to go with a mi 6 once I've found a daily discount from some retailer, and luckily no issues with it so far. Other than the fact that I can't lock my bootloader up if don't want to use that shitty, now unsupported stock rom I mean. ~ Now things are in a less shitty shape so I'll probably get 2 budget-y(probably the same model so I can use one as the backup of the other), one with stock experience without any fuss, banking fux etc to be in it and the other one with again unlocked bootloader and all my non stock stuff in it. Hate to be contributing to the e-waste pile but I don't see any other way in today's market.

The main differences between a phone from 5-10 years ago and a phone from right now are things like bigger screens, better performance/watt, better cameras (and a massive part of picture quality is actually software), and other relatively minor incremental upgrades. There haven't really been any revolutionary new changes to the basic design of a smartphone for a long time, and it's unlikely there will be. The big hurdle with Linux phones is getting the software working, and once you get it working with current hardware it's gonna work even better with future hardware. Personally I'm still using a phone from 2015 and I see zero reason to upgrade to a new model from a hardware point of view. The manufacturers know this, which is why they try to obsolete old models by dropping software support.
@nodezsh3 жыл бұрын
@@brnddi You're actually right, the software hasn't become more demanding and so the hardware has had no reason to catch up. Perhaps that's good for our wallets. Perhaps not so much for the motivation of engineers. I don't actually know, I don't know what the current state of hardware is when we get that deep. Perhaps we'll get open source hardware development soon?

Every time you say „Linux“, I imagine Richard Stallman coming and saying „Do you mean Linux the kernel or GNU+Linux the OS?“ 😅
@cdvideodump3 жыл бұрын
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux. I use Arch btw
