Anthony realizing he still has almost 30 year old save, and panicking because he realizes they'll disappear any day now if he doesn't get them off of the card is really endearing. Not sure if Anthony noticed this but the time when the N64 reset itself is when he plug in the wireless adapter with the memory pack connected. The time when the N64 didn't reset itself is when he plug in the wireless adapter without the memory pack. This means the memory pack is the cause of the reset, either by design to read the saves or faulty capacitor from the power draw.

Just to clarify here, Diddy Kong Racing didn't use the memory pak for save games. As the big warning screen shows (and like Mario Kart 64), the only thing the memory pak was used for was to save ghost data in Time Trial. There actually was a peripheral that allowed you to use both a memory card and a rumble pak at the same time. It was a rumble pak with a built in slot to add a memory card. And it had a switch that let you choose between rumble and save whenever you wanted. E: It was called the TremorPak Plus. There actually were paks that did rumble as well as memory pak functionality. They weren't common, but they were really popular with the WWF (World Wrestling Federation) games. WWF actually released their own pak and that's the most common version. They usually stored about as much as a regular memory pak, and some of them even had switches that let you switch between different internal memory paks. They weren't as reliable however. Anthony...you don't need a gameshark to back up your game saves from your cartridges or memory cards.....to back up your game saves off of N64 cartridges, get a device called a Retrode. You can literally copy the game ROM and saved games off of the cartridge. As for the memory cards, you can get an Everdrive and back up (or create an image) of the entire memory card to the SD card thats loaded onto the Everdrive cartridge itself, and then back up those saves to a computer from the SD card. Don't bother with 20+ year old Gamesharks. Also, you can mod the memory cards...remove the battery and save chip and solder a save chip to the memory card board that doesnt require a battery. I bought a modded one and i just back up my memory cards to the Everdrive SD card and wipe the memory card through the everdrive. Seriously, the Everdrive is a game changer for the N64. All your ROMs, cartridge saved games, and memory card saved games all reside on the SD card in the Everdrive that you can easily back up to a computer. EDIT: side note, when you back up the saved games from both the cartridges or memory cards, be sure that the names of the files for the saved games match the name of the file for the matching ROM. Otherwise the game ROM won't see or be able to read the saved file...the everdrive wont know what file to pull from the SD card when booting up a game at least in the case of cartridge saves. For memory card saves, you have to manually move the files to and from the memory card

Didn't test it with the PC because you couldn't be bothered to get the powersupply for the USB/N64 adapter, didn't test it with a fighting game against another player to see if input lag will affect gameplay, didn't test the battery life claims, your review was basically, yep, it works. I don't recall too many N64 games that supported (or even *needed* to support) both a Controller Pak and a Rumble Pak. Many that did support the Controller Pak supported it as an option (or backup) in addition to saving your data on the cartridge, making it more of a way to take your data with you to your friends' houses. Even among launch games, Super Mario 64 (and many games throughout its lifetime) supported cartridge saving (especially later on after the introduction of the Rumble Pak). I don't recall ever having to choose between memory card and rumble... I remember it almost being either one or the other, and thanks to Nintendo's choice of cartridges for the generation we didn't have to rely as much on memory cards compared to owners of PlayStation or other competing consoles.

Anthony is the best. I've had a Brawler 64 for a year or so now, and I love it.

I had that exact BenQ Monitor. Got in 2006 and it finally kicked the bucket in 2018. It was $799 at launch I think? HDMI 1, Component, Composite, VGA, DVI. IPS Panel. Also these controllers look great! I still find it hard to play N64 without that wild design though.

"this is the controller that I would have used for my sister or somebody" And that... is why our generation didn't have much girls gaming... They always got the crappy experience ;)

not all N64 games use the controller pack for saving. Most use the memory built into the module, which in most cases for save games is an EEPROM that keeps the game status forever. There are only a handful of games with module internal memory that still use SRAM like in the NES and SNES times or just like in the controller pack. Didy Kong Racing as well as Goldeneye 007 use EEPROM for savegames. So you can save it on the PC with the appropriate hardware, but you don't have to

The power flipping is probably 2 things. The power voltage required for the controller swap causes the trip. Second is possibly the power supply needs a recapped. You can get a compositor kit for 10 bucks or less or get a recapped power supply for 35 on ebay

This was fun for a little while but the main one I used started breaking down after a few months and I tend to treat my controllers with kids gloves. My N64 controllers from when I was a kid still work just fine, and honestly feel better.

This is awesome! If I ever get my retro setup actually going, I'm definitely going to buy one of these. I still have my PS1 and N64, as well as my Sega Genesis, and I have a 27" CRT TV. I really should get on that.
