7:15 it's because Apple is doing brightness mapping so the HDR looks better based on the room brightness. It boosts shadows in dark content so you can see it if you are in a very bright room. If you switch to any of those calibrated modes it disables this functionality completely. Hence the great results.

@@Bassbarbie Don't make the mistake of buying 16GB. Buy at least 24GB. 16GB is not good enough for actual work nowadays. I work for a startup, and we all in the tech team (devs and designers) have 16GB models. I'd been complaining about it for over 2 years. If I open the activity monitor > memory when working, I can see the memory pressure is high so I know it's lack of memory. And I'm not doing anything too heavy, just programming (browser and IDE most of the time). The HR team kept ordering 16GB models for these past 3 years; until recently, when I was visiting the office (I'm remote), the head of design in my company was complaining about how slow the CPU in these Macbooks are - he couldn't open figma, notion and google meets at the same time because it became unusable. Then I jumped in and showed him it was a memory issue, not a cpu issue. High memory pressure (his showed a red graph - mine is yellow, so his was much worse), swaps all around. The head of HR was sitting next to him. She told me her Macbook also becomes really laggy when she joins a meeting. We tested it, and again, memory pressure (hers was only 8GB though, which should be enough for basic browsing and meetings but isn't). So now they FINALLY ordered 24GB models, which should be here soon. You might not care much about the reduced performance. Most devs in my company don't even notice it. But I'm not sure I'd use that as a metric. They use 4K monitors at 30Hz (with a company provided hub that only supports up to 4K@30Hz) and don't notice ANY lag at all in the cursor movement. They swear there is absolutely none, it's completely smooth.

FINALLY! A laptop speaker test with the volume at a normal level. Apple DSP's quite aggressively, so when you are at lower volume they'll let the bass go a bit deeper, and at high volume they reduce it all to keep distortion away. So at lower volume you more dynamic range, and it goes deeper.

I may be in the minority but I would not get the Matt texture screen. You went “you can’t even work on the one on the right” but you were looking at it at like 30 degree off axis and low down, who works like that? No one. The reflection wouldn't be as bad in normal, straight in front position. And also…more importantly, at least for me, a glossy screen is more colour accurate. A Matt screen will always and forever washed out. It’s the nature of the texture finish. But if I have a reflection problem? I just move. It is a laptop after all. Another small thing, I never found a glossy screen on a phone/iPad, all the way back from Gameboy to Switch to be a problem and found myself “god damn, I can’t read my messages or see my games”. No reason that’s going to change now.

Sat in a bright office space? Everyone hates their glossy mac screens. Even the LG monitors with a matte coating reflect lights and reflections from windows in certain spots, so I can't really view the top-left part of the monitor. Glossy screens are a horror in day to day use. 'Matte screen' is one of the first options I pick whenever I start filtering on monitors, TVs, laptops, etc...

Exactly, and as someone who works outside a lot on my M1 MBPro 14 using brightintosh, that 1000 nits combats most glare anyway unless you are at an angle
@grdprojekt2 ай бұрын
Have you been in something like an office space? Where the light sources are pretty much everywhere, including behind you, so at the right place & the right angle, the screen will reflect those lights? Sure you can tilt the screen up or down.. but as you said, who would see their screen off-axis?

Hey Jake! I’m also using a 2019 16 inch MBP. I use it with windows for games also doing a little bit of video editing and programing on macOS and it’s still feels perfectly fine for me. Honestly I think it’s the best uni laptop because some classes needs windows 10 software and others you can just go with macOS. I think it would be a good video idea to revisit these older intel MacBooks because you can get quite good specs now for really good money. I also did the VRM heat pad mod and gaming is quite good on it now that it doesn’t thermal throttle that easily. Still needs Throttlestop though for a consistent performance 😅

The style and approach in this review was so much more pleasing than some of the other videos where overly excited bloke gets their knickers wet by running this and that benchtestblahblah. Also many complained about the fingerprints and recommended to avoid the space black. Which is exactly why I went with the space black. I've always felt that matte finish on an elitebook or whatever crap I'm forced to use for work looks cheap. Now that apple put a price on it and called it nanotexture, folks are going crazy. Oh well.

Why do you cheap out on the new model? It's the smaller CPU, the Nano Texture is missing and with the small SSD, you don't get the transfer speeds, that you get with the 2TB model. Pointless

You say you got the M4 at first and then during the comparison you say it's the M4 *Pro.* So which one is it? Because that benchmark difference isn't huge if it was between the M3 Pro and M4 Pro.

Matte displays are hideous. I'd rather have reflections than that hazy mess. Also, don't ruin the design just because time has passed! Aside from the notch, it's essentially a perfect computer. I wish they had offered this 'layout' between chip versions for M3 series; I would've been able to get a so-called 'pro' chip instead of a max version, then.

looking forward to the m4 pro with gpu upgrade and bigger ssd I ordered WITH nano screen... This should be a good upgrade from my late 2016 4port 13"mbp with 8gb ram lol. I will say that despite the butterfly keyboard reliability issues in the wild, mine hasn't missed a beat and has been powered on 24/7 to be used for all sorts of tasks. This year the battery finally says it needs service.. still runs whisper quiet as well.

Can any display achieve perfect accuracy with SDR and HDR content shown simultaneously? Doubt it. That’s likely why the default mode measures as ‘inaccurate.’

@DavidLukner-fx1imАй бұрын
why go through the trouble of testing the display color accuracy when your methodology is flawed. the black level of the display is dynamic and HDR video is tonemapped automatically when in high ambient light. hardware unboxed noted this back in their 2021 review and showed good color accuracy in the default XDR preset. the reference modes are still more accurate, but you have not explained the full story.

2:25 Yes, you can use it :) But not from 2 meters away, looking from the side, I agree 😂 Also because you couldn't even reach the keyboard :) If you're in front of it, unless you have a lot of dust on your display, it's completely useable. Of course, you wouldn't chose to stay in a position which captures the most amount of direct light, come on :). I've never been in an environment where I couldn't turn/rotate at all. Yeah... it would be nice to not have any glare in environments with concentrated light sources, IF the brightness, contrast and colors would look the same (especially in regular environments, where you don't have bright light sources, like we work most of the time). However, that's not the case. And in 99% of the cases, where we are working inside, and don't have our desks with the displays oriented to reflect the window (because we're not morons), you give up more than you win. Glad I could see that before ordering, so I didn't get the nano texture option.
