Cancel culture bears a lot of smiliarities to the snake that eats its own tail. In order to even uphold the status quo of power that cancel culture wields, the bar as to what constitutes "literally Hitler" has to be lowered constantly. Now, that is going to bite the people, who most fervently demand it, really hard in the ass at one point or other as there are absolutely no safeguards against an outrage mob that demands removal of the "problematic" on a whim.

Man, that ending really seals the quote for me. He seems to be echoing Acton’s ideas (I don’t have my timeline correct to know who said what first) of “Power tends to corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men.” Though, Acton was saying this even in regard to Papal Infallability, the point can be generalized across many areas, and those who Nietzsche describes want the kind of power that Acton describes. The kind of power that will start by creating rules with good intentions and end in total tyranny.

But then Trans activists got involved, I dared to go "Wait a minute fellas, since when are trans people broadly discriminated against?" And like a pack of ravenous wolves my "friends" turned on me. That was my first real kick into politics. And it only got worse from there. From that day forward, almost every day of every week of every month of every year, there was some new shit coming up from social media or the media about how I was pretty much a sexist, racist, bigot or whatever, simply because I existed. And I do mean that. Have an opinion? "BIGOT". Have a hobby or interest? "GATEKEEPING BIGOT". So much as have a dick? "SEXIST, HOMOPHOBIC BIGOT". I never wanted politics to become a part of my life but it has literally become inescapable. Simplh trying to exist and have fun as a white looking guy has become a fucking crime. And naturally, you start getting pissed about it after awhile. You stop caring. You lash back. You argue. And suddenly it's as if you're the cringey one or the guy with something wrong. And I just don't care. I'm glad these people got Biden in because the last half a year has been funny watching everyone shift from "Orange man bad" to "MAYBE ORANGE MAN WASN'T SO BAD" as Biden tears America apart.

But that triple-beef, grande burrito they ate for lunch is raging against their guts like the very wrath of God, and their pants won't survive another 20 miles up the road. The reality is that they know exactly how good they've got it here, compared to where they came from, and they're more like that one asshole that decided that "any port in a storm" excused them forgoing the toilet altogether and leaving a big sloppy dump in the sink (True story, I have seen this).

Dude I've been thinking this for a long time I'm so tired of being guilted into caring about other people's feelings. George Floyd is a name I'm unbelievably sick of hearing, doesn't mean I don't think what happened to him was awful doesn't mean I don't want his family to get justice or be supported or rebuild. But my emotional bandwidth is limited and I've cut people that were like George Floyd out of my life I've been a criminal I've had criminal and drug addicted friends I grew up put down the needle and cut those people out of my life and I don't feel bad about in the slightest it's what I had to do for myself to ensure I wasn't going back to that awful hell on earth. But now I've got some drug addict being thrust upon me as some kind of saintly figure. George Floyd has become the lefts personal Jesus and I'm not interested in celebrating that kind of lifestyle.

Just because it’s not the government censoring our speech doesn’t mean it’s not just as damaging. It’s almost just as bad state-enacted censorship.

The thing about engaging and discussing (the opposite of cancelling) is that, in that process, you are forced to humanize the person you are speaking to. When you engage in a discussion with someone, you very quickly realize that the point is not to convince them and bring them to your side, but rather to understand why they hold their views, while you explain why you hold your views. Discussion is not a tool of manipulation and shouldn't be viewed as one. If you convince someone of your ideas in a discussion, that simply means that you have exposed that person to an idea that makes more sense to them than their original ideas. If after hours, days or even years of discussion you cannot convince someone, that's not a bad thing. You probably will understand that person much better and vice-versa, which allows you both to coexist. To a radical, this is unacceptable. The "either with me or against me" mentality goes against the spirit of discussion itself, so their only resort is cancelling, and claiming that they're cancelling the "real" radicals. It's easy to make a radical admit to their own radicalism, though, and sure enough they will say that moderates and centrists are the real scum because they allow the other side to exist. So from that point on anyone who doesn't agree 100% is free game, and you can never discuss with them for fear of being deradicalized or having your own side lose strength. It's no coincidence that the far-left and the far-right can only speak in war terms when it comes to power and politics.

When people sense their beliefs are in danger they will change the environment to protect those beliefs before reconsidering. Also very tired of the cancel culture... After 5+ years of looking around the writing industry and actively querying and looking at submissions, the calls for diversity and discrimination against non-political storytelling or from normal or white people... So I've decided it's time to start to fight against it the best way I can: starting a press to give back opportunities to those who don't fit the dogma. Progressives aren't the only content creators, but they are vastly in charge of gatekeeping and it's getting worse. We're missing real opportunities at genius and something new with risky ideas being ignored for fear of being cancelled and big publishers applying "morality clauses" to their contracts so if Twitter throws a big enough fit, your hard work querying and story don't even matter; they won't defend you or publish your book. Doesn't matter what the politicians or the mobs say. Doesn't matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right. This nation was founded on one principle above all else: the requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or consequences. When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth, and tell the whole world - "No, *you* move." "

It's been very hard being surrounded by people, who were not affected by the rioting, that support the protests. I was close enough to the rioting that for many, many days I'd sit at night on voice chat with my local friends and we'd self-report what was going on. Luckily they never hit residential where I am (though they took out both grocery stores and pharmacies at alternating times) but one of my friends had to flee their apartment because the fires and shootings got as close as one street over and other friends on the higher floors where watching the bottom floors of their buildings / neighborhoods get wrecked. We were all very concerned and all very close to losing everything. Meanwhile, everyone that I knew who basically makes more money and can afford to live further out from the urban centers were posting pro-protesting stuff everywhere and talking on the phone about "how important" this all was and that the destruction and damage was "an unfortunate side effect" that had to be overlooked or accepted. It made me really mad because I was right there. I was in the heat of trying to decide when to flee, how close is too close and trying to guess if I was making the right choice by not fleeing this night or that. No one unaffected seemed to care about my problem, only ever saying "lol just leave then". I'd try to explain how that was on the table, but that it was still not as simple as walking away for a few days. I mean, if you leave your home because of riots, do you expect your home to be intact when you get back? No. If they actually did hit our home that means we lose everything. Most people don't have the money to replace their lives and yet their is a distinct faction of pro-BLM people who just ignore or hand wave all of that. At this point we're safe. The riots have calmed for the most part and aren't "reaching" or "spreading" out as widely as they were. But now I'm left with this divide in lived experience and it means people I know, whom I interact with regularly, just don't believe it was that bad. Everyone local, in the area, knew how bad it got; but everyone beyond and outside of the scope of damage isn't interested in how the protests negatively affected me. It feels almost like gas-lighting.

@Peace Ecaep Electrons don't move through copper wire at the speed of light. It's changes in the electromagnetic field that propagate at the speed of light.

@Peace Ecaep The electrons do not move at the speed of light. That is physically impossible because they have a rest mass. The EM field propagates at the speed of light but the electron do not. Source: am physicist

@RocketSurgeon They still propagate at the speed of light. What you are referring to is that light travels at a different speed in different mediums. C is specifically the speed of light in a vacuum. So saying it move "at the speed of light" is correct, however saying it moves "at C" is incorrect.

@RocketSurgeon I thought the slowdown and resulting refraction was because the mass forces the photons to take a more crooked path and that their speed measured over this path is still c, but a straight measurement through the mass results in a lower speed because it smoothes over the crookedness of the path, similar to the coastline paradox.

Wait, are you suggesting that losing a tooth has a marked, empirically observable effect on the ability to speak? Or intelligence?

Maybe others have pointed this out already, but this one hit me square in the face: so this guy, the leader of the discord or whatever, is against 'xenophobia' (I think he even said that he does not tolerate it in a post, which is already ironic) - but he booted you because "you're just too different"? That's gold.
