Shorty September sounds like a great way I can catch up with my Goodreads Target, I am currently trailing 3 books behind. The Midwich Cuckoos is a great read, there is a movie Village of the Damned from back in 1960, which is also very good. Enjoy your September reads.

Excellent way to catch up! Thanks for the film info too, I may try and see if I can find that one to watch. 😊📚

Think I might just have to reread "Of Mice and Men". I also plan to read the first Sherlock Holmes book, since it's only 160 pages. Not sure if it comes into any prompts though. Did you see my video comparing the book and play of "Kidnapped"? That's also a film, so you could use that if it's short enough.
@AliceandtheGiantBookshelf Жыл бұрын
Oh Kidnapped is a good one. I would have thought it’s short enough. I love the Sherlock Holmes books, though my favourites are the short stories and The Hound of the Baskervilles. 😊📚

'Of Mice and Men' is still being studied, I did it for GCSE as did two of my children. It's worth reading in terms of the concept of the American dream. Shorty September seems like a good excuse to reduce the TBR pile.

I’m looking forward to it, as I feel I missed out by not getting to study it when I know so many do. It’s a great excuse to reduce the TBR and I’m all for it! 😊📚

I did some extra credit work around Of Mice and Men when I was in Year 7 because I was just such a massive nerd, it’s a great one to get stuck into! enjoy Shorty Seps 💖

Of Mice and Men!! That is one of the most amazing books. A masterclass in how to write a short book! I didn’t realise Women Talking was so short!! Now I want to add it to my already unachievable TBR! I reckon you’ll read 4/12 😂

You know how I love a small but perfectly formed book. Cannot wait to read it. 4 would be a solid effort taking into account all my other crazy plans! 😜

Watching this inspired me to definitely do it this year. Love the video and love the mention of The Word for World is Forest. It’s not very violent, it’s more philosophical and I’m sure you’ll love it. I think Becky Chambers is a fan of Le Guin. Really glad you picked it up.

Yay! You should. It seems a good way to knock a few off my TBR. Thanks for influencing my buying of The Word for World is Forest, I’m looking forward to reading it! 😊📚

I might casually jump on board with Shorty September - I need to get my TBR down and an excuse to plough through some short books might help!

Do! I’m definitely viewing it as an opportunity to reduce the TBR a bit. 😊📚

I have also not read Of Mice and Men. I like the sound of lots of these! I guess three or four will be read! Frighteningly, I think anything set in the eighties or nineties is now considered historical fiction 😬

There are at least two film versions of The Midwich Cuckooos, the earlier one called I think The Village of the Damned is my preferred version, there is also a TV Series of the book.

I think you should try and get to the Steinbeck, you will love it. East of Eden is my favourite of his books. There was an old tv adaptation with Jane Seymour, was shocked at her character's cruelty, sheltered teen that I was😂. Read the book and loved it. I have no doubt that you will get to most of the books 👍. Happy Reading!

My favorite length of a book is about 300 pages. These days, many books longer than 300 pages suffer from poor editing. With that said, I have and do enjoy many longer works. The Great Circle is one example. I loved short Foster by Claire Keegan and recently read two short works, one based in Japan and one based in China. Happy Shorty September very soon!
@AliceandtheGiantBookshelf Жыл бұрын
I do agree, I love a book that is small but perfectly formed and very often when I read longer books I feel like they could have lost 100 pages and been better for the edit. You are right on Great Circle, that’s an example of a book telling its story in the amount of pages needed, no detail is wasted! 😊📚
@bjminton2698 Жыл бұрын
My favorite length for a mystery is around 200 pages. For me, current publications are just too long. After AC, my favorite books are mysteries from the 80s, 90s, and 2000s. Back then, paperbacks were less than $5. I predict you will read 4 of these shorties next month. The Steinbeck should definitely be one of them! 🙂
@AliceandtheGiantBookshelf Жыл бұрын
I do think 200 pages is a perfect mystery length, well between 200-300, not more. Definitely agree that current writers crime books have got too long. One of my favs from the 80s is Dick Francis but I don’t have any left that were under 250, all over 300 now I think. I hope I do read 4, I might start with Steinbeck! 😊📚

Of the Mary Westmacott books that I have read, (3) Absent In The Spring is my favorite. Did you read about that book in her autobiography? She wrote really quickly and yet she says it is her favorite, she was very proud of it.
