Yay!! Glad you're joining in on Shorty Sept!! I have the same issue with Hemingway, I think 😅. I'm determined to keep giving him a try but then his books just sit on my shelves unread because I can't bring myself to get excited enough about them to actually start reading them 😅🤦‍♀.

I have a very nice pile for Shorty September, that compliments Shaketember, which is three Shakespearean plays. The books I am looking forward to getting to are; Miss Brill by Katherine Mansfield (my first one by her,) Galatea by Madeline Miller, A book of Chekhov's short stories, A couple of plays; The Crucible by Arthur Miller ( very relevant right now,) Three Sisters by Checkhov, (A play I have owned for years but have never read, I don't know why I always love his plays.) A book of poems I have been meaning to get to, Divisible By Itself and One by Kae Tempest, I am very excited by this next book, I have been wanting to buy it for a long time, and I finally found a lovely copy; Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys, A book of four novellas by Edith Wharton called Old New York. A Persephone book that I have been wanting to get to; Cheerful Weather for the Wedding by Julia Straches, Good bye Mr Chips, (a favorite movie of mine that I never read the novel, I am so looking forward to it.) Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons, (another favorite movie and I never read the book.) And three Australian books for Australian Sept. I really don't think I will get to all of them in Sept, but I will read them this year, I am so looking forward to them.

Wide Sargasso Sea is enjoying a new life, which is a bit unexpected. I suppose that Jane Eyre must be in renaissance too? It only makes sense, no. As it happens, in another book club I visit we're reading Wuthering Heights next month, so that will fit in well for me.

All the NF about writing sound really interesting, especially the one about where writers write!

I'm combining Sci-fi September and Shorty September using the Shorty prompts. I am starting out with a couple of things by Ursula Le Guin: Rocannon's World and The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas. Rocannon's World is a modern classic, in my opinion, and it's also an unexpected purchase -- on impulse, I bought a collection Le Guin's Hainish stories as I was buying something else premeditated. She is very possibly my favorite fiction writer. The 1973 Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas fits the 1970s or '80s prompt. It's wonderful to see all your inventive possibilities!

My pile of possibilities has been looking at me for some time, I’m very eager to start Shorty September. I think in my mind I’ve decided I can get to lots of them because they are so short, and reduce my TBR! You have lots of good possibilities. 😊📚

I have a couple short books that want finishing: Gilchrist's "In the Land of Dreamy Dreams", Hope's " Prisoner of Zenda", Sandburg's "Harvest Poems", "A Tool Case for Language Learning", and a reread of "Dubliners". If a start a new book in September (and I shouldn't), it might be Skalietska's "You Don't Know What War Is". I also have that Turgenev lying unfinished somewhere. Carr's "A Month in the Country" recommended to me for the third time this week. Plus all the big books (two from the library).

Your mention of O Henry reminded me of the English Literature text books in school that always included stories by him. One of his most famous was ‘The Gift of The Magi”. I hope you’re able to read lots of these books you mentioned in September because I’m looking forward to the video they will generate. Cheers, Katie!

Yes, I always believe everyone knows Gift of the Magi tho not always by its proper name. Describe the story to them and they're yes, I know and then she does this. ... and in the end they. .

Had started The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida before I found out about Shorty September so will have to finish it (am enjoying it); however, I'm looking forward to starting on Daisy Miller (Henry James) and maybe Summer by Edith Wharton. After that, we'll see! Always enjoy your posts!

Yesterday I started composing a tbr, so if any of the candidates < 250p then, they move up to the top of the list. I like to be able to participate but you know how it is with the demands of a long list.

Across the River and Into the Trees is, in my opinion, not Hemingway’s best. But I will be really interested in your thoughts if you get to it.

Not having read it I can't comment on it being his best or not, but I have read several others that are absolutely brilliant. One hopes all are the same quality as the best but of course that's not possible. Unfortunately, others to whom I spoke share your opinion and I fear Kate will become prejudiced before encountering his best work.

Across is NOT his best, but it is typical and recognizable Hemmingway. We three all like Hem, but we're guys. How many women do either of you know that love Hemmingway? I don't know any. Katie didn't "get" Old Man and the Sea. How is that possible, since it is such an elemental, seemingly simple, but very profound story of the human struggle? The Caribbean, non-Macho Macho culture, baseball, fishing, and sharks.....what else could one ask for? BUT, no women in the story, that must be it!!, although some of those sharks MAY have been female@@jamesduggan7200

I hadn't heard of Shorty September until just now, but I am participating in the 30 books in 30 days challenge, run on the Luminous Libro channel. Since the general idea there is also to read short books that you can get through in a day, it was great to see your recommendations of short books! I also didn't like The Old Man and the Sea when I read it in high school. :-) The Murakami book looks interesting - I'm also not a big fan of the content of his books but I like reading books about writing. I look forward to seeing what you think of some of these books!

From your pile, I have read Rooms of Their Own and loved it. Am going to start Days At The Morisaki Bookshop and looking forward to it. Thanks for your inspiration, my pile of possibilities for Sept will probably be Novelist as a Vocation, The Territory of Light, Spring Garden, We Have Always Lived in the Castle, An Old Man's Love (to finish off the remaining 40%) and When We Were Orphans 😊

I'd love to read that Murakami. I also don't get along with his fiction, but I loved his book What I Talk About When I Talk About Running. I also love Turgenev's Fathers and Sons. Putting Nell Stevens on my TBR!

I don't know of too many women that like Hemmingway (I could be wrong, but my reading spouse despises him) but will be interested to see if you succeed with "Across". It's a reference to Stonewall Jackson's final comment as he was dying of pneumonia following his wounding at Chancellorsville and has some relevance to the story. If you didn't like Old Man and the Sea, I'm guessing this one won't be a hit either. EH is very fatalistic and raw, but I love his style and the big personality that shines from every page he produced. I doubt he would have been fun to have as a friend. The Sun Also Rises is a classic like no other, and I love For Whom the Bell Tolls and Islands in the Stream. Hem loved women, but did he admire them or write many wonderful women characters? I'd love to hear your take on those.

Rather than reading “Across the River and Into the Woods” I strongly recommend any of Hemingway’s three most notable novels: “A Farewell to Arms” (a WWI love story), “The Sun Also Rises” (expatriates in Spain post WWI), “For Whom the Bell Tolls” (an American joins Spanish partisans fighting Franco). For Shorty September I’ll be reading “A Month in the Country” and “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. I hope you enjoy whatever your ultimate reading choice will be.

Yes, I've read those three Hemingway novels and would give each 5 stars. However, also I liked Old Man and the Sea so possibly I'm not completely objective. I don't know.
