How to pump on roller skates. Pumping forwards and backwards (fakie) is a fundamental skill when skating at the skate park. It's only been in the last 6 months that I have fully understood the concept and body mechanics of pumping (especially fakie) which has helped me to unlock tricks and get more air. Hopefully, this explanation will help you gain more power in your pump!

I was able to watch this before my skate session this morning, and got to try your techniques in a great big bowl. WOW...!! What an amazing difference! I had heard about the four pumps idea, but couldn't really picture it, or get comfortable with it until saw your video. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! That big bowl is much less terrifying to get out of now!

I went to a metal mini ramp today (it's the closest to an actual halfpipe I've been able to find), and I was trying to work on getting that pump while going fakie up the ramp and back down. I get a good pump going forward up and then down. I'm still struggling with figuring out how that fakie pump is supposed to feel. Going forward, I get that good crunch and push to go backward. But going backward to forward, where does the power come from? Does that question even make sense? Thank you for your super informative series. I've benefited a lot from it.
@ShortysSkateSeries
@ShortysSkateSeries 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the delayed response. I thought I replied to this but I think my reply disappeared 🤷🏻‍♀️ Whenever you're going backwards/ fakie you want to pump through your toes and whenever you are going forwards you are pumping more through you're heels. For me when going fakie up the ramp, it kind of feels like I scoop my hips backwards up the ramp and then going forwards I scoop down the ramp, pushing through my heels. Hopefully that make sense.

I’d like to ask about pumping even larger ramps. I don’t seem to be able to pump any higher than 7-8 feet up. Especially if I’m hopping 180 and not pumping fakie. I hear things like “pump harder” or “pump longer” but I think people use the term “pump” differently because I do feel like I’m pumping as hard as I can. I should be able to do this. I need your clear explanation on how to break past the 8 foot height barrier. Can you help? Thank you 🙏🏼

Hey, thank you for your video :) I have a question. I have very gummy wheels on my skates, because I've skate a lot on the streets. Can anyone explain me detailed what the negatives are on skating ramps with gummy wheels? Thanx :)
@ShortysSkateSeries
@ShortysSkateSeries 3 жыл бұрын
Gummy/ soft wheels are ok to do basic park skating but because they are soft it means they will be slow on ramps as they grip more. I don't recommend gummy wheels for sliding as they cause wheel bite. My favourite park wheels are the Bont Flow wheels. If you are just just getting into park skating then the Street Flow are good choice. amzn.to/3hVKjrj

hi. when u say to have dominant foot forward, do you mean like, if I'm right-handed and my right hand is strongest, that I would have my right foot forward? I've never tried pumping.
@ShortysSkateSeries
@ShortysSkateSeries 5 ай бұрын
It is whatever foot is most comfortable for you in a staggered stance. I'm right-handed but my dominate foot for park skating is left. But for pumping, especially if you are beginning your journey, is to learn to pump with left and right leading as it will make tricks easier later down the track.

I tend to fall forwards when I skate up a quarter pipe or (mini) ramp or any transition onwards basically. Any tips?
@ShortysSkateSeries
@ShortysSkateSeries 2 жыл бұрын
It's hard to tell without footage, but you might be tipping your upper body too forwards over your toes. You want your chest up, knee bent and butt down. Feel free to DM me some video on Instagram and I can have a look. @shortstop.6

About how far down do you sit into it when you swing backwards? I have a tendency to either sit too much and then promptly crash, or not sit enough and just wobble weird. It looks like when you go forwards to the coping you're basically sitting in a chair in the air, is it about the same but backwards??
@ShortysSkateSeries
@ShortysSkateSeries 3 жыл бұрын
It might be that your fakie stance need some tweaking. Do you have any footage I can see? You can tag me on Instagram @shortstop.6

Hey. When do you pump? I wait for the point where the vertical part of the ramp starts to change into the horizontal, but I struggle to get enough power transfer to air above the coping. When you where on the Vert ramp it looked like you where pumping when still on the vertical part. Will that's give me more of a pump?
@ShortysSkateSeries
@ShortysSkateSeries 3 жыл бұрын
When I am on the flat and looking to go up the transition/ramp (forwards or backwards) I will squat and load my legs before I reach the beginning of the transition so I can "pump" into the transition. Ie The pump will happen as I go from horizontal into the vertical. And then when I go from the top of the ramp back down (forwards or backwards) I do the same. I squat before I reach the transition so can "pump" when the vertical starts to turn into the horizontal. I hope that makes sense. I plan on doing a air the coping tutorial soon so that may help. Or you can hit me up on IG: @shortstop.6 with some video and I can see if I can help you with any tips.

Whenever I'm pumping backwards my skates tend to start swerving, does that have to do with my stance or should I tighten my trucks
@ShortysSkateSeries
@ShortysSkateSeries 3 жыл бұрын
Is it both feet or mainly the back foot? You could check your trucks but if you don't feel unstable going forward then it probably has more to do with you stance. Can you send me footage via my IG: @shortstop.6 so I can have a look?

What happens when’s your dominant leg changes when going backwards 🥴. Going forwards my dominant leg is my right but when going backwards it’s my left .

You need to lift your toes or heels so that the wheels don't bump into the coping but will roll over, even if you don't have enough momentum to stall
