I think art is able to find beauty and meaning in something that makes others say "how is that art?" What made Chris Burden and his pieces so great was that it complicated the relationship between the art and the audience. No longer was it just about a painting on a wall, but it put a man in danger for artistic beauty to show a new side to what art could really be.

No, art is is used to express creativity in a objectively meaningless way. This isn't art. This is getting a chunk of lead rammed into your arm. Big difference.
@Axelrckr8 жыл бұрын
And how is that so many people call it art? In the end it doesn't matter if someone desqualifies it or not, if its legitimated by groups, institutions and individuals themselves, it is one with their realities and their cultural and artistic perceptiones and therefore, it becomes art. It's kinda like the concept of God, if you think about it... Does God exists? For some it does, for others, not so much,..
@imperiumoccidentis73518 жыл бұрын

@DiamorphineDeath6 жыл бұрын
Is that what he meant to say with this, or is that what you're attributing to it to give it an inherent value that it lacks as there is no apparent transcendent aspect to it. In the same way Hirst's shark was an example of two opposing views from the critic at the same time; it was deconstructionalism due to the shark disinigrating due to faulty taxidermy, which was purposeful on Hirst's part as without saying anything, he is left to have everything attributed to him regardless. Or, was it just incompetency as the "artist" did not understand enough in terms of how to preserve the shark, which he did indeed want to preserve, yet was incapable to due to a lack of knowledge on the subject. That's the issue that comes up here; by doing superficial and meaningless acts, the critic is able to attribute literally anything as a result, this also means that the work is incapable of being criticized as there can always be a justification brought up as it is literally a blank slate. It is beyond satire, and the bad joke that has been the art world for decades now still remains just as unfunny here as it is now with the copy cat clones Burden still influences. We cannot all be artists, as that denigrates what an artist is. There is then zero value to making art if it is an egalitarian expression. Rembrandt would therefor be on the same rung as warhol, and Caravaggio right next to Duchamp; or the street walking standing shoulder to shoulder with Van Gogh. Why does this seem like a morally righteous thing to you? To denigrate actual talent and ability because your postmodernist nihilistic worldview takes pleasure in the denigration of substance? Your hubris must spit in the face of tradition and laugh, the multiplied laugh of a whole sea of individualists, how it all sounds the same...

@DiamorphineDeath6 жыл бұрын
What is it getting you through? What inherent meaning in any of his work gives your life a greater meaning? What do you see that you are inspired by? Transfixed by? What transcendent value is there present? Does he work make tears stroll down due to the humanity present within it, the larger themes? I see Rembrandt as a figure that shows the inner workings of the same, in the same way Dostoevsky showed the inner workings of man with the written word; these individuals elevate man, whereas figures like Burden, Burroughs, Warhol, etc, instead turn the mirror and say, "look at how boring and ugly our sterile existence is; aren't we clever?" They've been saying this since the early 20th century, "look at our godless materialism and consumption, shouldn't our art be just as meaningless?" Does this make it easier for you to stroll through your urban setting, with ad upon ad affixed to every structure, does it make it easier to know that the art that once was capable of transporting you away from there, is now firmly rooted in that same reality. I'm genuinely curious to know what is brought to the table that modern life already doesn't gift you in the form of meaningless trinkets, purposeless, and spiritual death.
